--------------------------------
You had expected it to be a nice September day when you left Emma’s this morning to head to class. How could you not with how brightly the sun shone through your bedroom window as the birds chirped?
If it was to send other birds early morning messages or just to alert a mate, you were never quite sure regardless, it had the markings of a good day. It had led you into such a false sense of security. Even feeling confident about the assignment you’ve been working on over the last week. Until G, your partner for the rest of the semester decided to point out every single flaw in it.
“Fool me once.” You huff, rubbing your arms as you shiver, your clothes soaked from the rain as you duck underneath a covered awning.
Your cordial conversation escalated into an argument quickly, and neither of you chose to back down. There was no tempering your shared anger, and before you knew it you were storming out of class, fuming. The once clear sky was now a deep gray and the rain was relentless.
You didn’t bring your umbrella – why would you? This morning felt perfect. Your eyes squint as you look out at the quad. There was no way you could go back home in this weather unless you wanted Em to unleash fiery wrath at how you would inevitably trail water all over the hardwood floors.
Granted it was your fault for heading out into the rain, but you still wanted to blame G for their part, no matter how small it was.
You sigh heavily, allowing your head to tilt backward as you squeeze your eyes shut and try to get your shivering under control.
“A-assho-le.” You say to no one, or at least you thought it was no one. As your ears finally pick up on the steps of someone walking towards you.
You don’t have to turn to see who it is, there was no mistaking those cautious steps. Their familiar scent was even noticeable in this weather. Light, fresh, and flowery. You would soon learn it was from the green tea they drank every morning.
They stop at your side, their dark monolid eyes taking in your appearance. They take a deep breath, hold it for a moment, and release it. Resulting in a deep full-bodied sigh. “You’re drenched.”
“N-no sh-shit,” you try to say, but your words come out in a garbled mess due to your chattering teeth.
“Good to see you can still be sarcastic-” You can’t help but feel somewhat triumphant until G continues speaking. “Even though you look like shit.”
“Hey-“ your words are quickly cut short, as G’s coat smacks you in the face.
You both scramble to catch it, narrowly missing the large puddle that has formed. Your hands have been so cold you barely registered the feel of the fabric.
The sudden warmth on your chilled fingertips is more satisfying than you’d care to admit. “You-“ G whispers, their voice barely audible above the sound of the rain against the awning. "you're freezing."
They had never sounded so small before; G has always spoken bluntly to you well to anyone. A faint reddish blush graces their cheek, a delicate contrast against their warm-toned skin.
You wonder what has caused such a reaction out of someone so stoic, the most you’ve seen from G is a temper that can match your own, or the joy of hanging out with your common friend, a wily redhead.
Your eyes begin to trail downwards, again you feel the warmth spreading across your skin. First from your wrists, and then to the back of your hand, as if they were being enveloped by…
It then clicks into place, the warmth on your hand and G’s tinted cheeks. You watch as G’s hands stroke your own, warming them. You quickly pull away, not daring to meet their eyes. “You're shivering."
G clears their throat, holding the coat out toward you.
“I don’t want it.”
“Put it on, you can’t afford to get sick. Besides, you forgot your umbrella.” G says their voice sounding almost amused, and it quickly grates your nerves.
You say nothing, yanking the coat on and stuffing your hands into the pockets. They take a step forward, their umbrella covering their head from the downpour.
You wouldn’t be surprised if they left you there, to either stand in your soaked clothes or walk home, but to your surprise they motion you to walk with them. That stubborn side of you, the side that likes to hold on to a grudge wishes to tell them to go.
But something in the way they look at you, holding that umbrella as the rain drums against the fabric – stops you.
“Look, about earlier…” they begin, but trail off. That peaceful quiet is now broken as the rain fills the silence.
Maybe it was the rain, maybe it had been long enough since the argument that it didn’t really matter anymore, or maybe it was the way they look at you as if you’re a puzzle to be solved that cools your temper.
“Thanks,” You mumble.
A ghost of a smile filters across their face, “Don’t mention it, besides, we still have an assignment to do.”
You roll your eyes eliciting a chortle from them, and soon you’re walking. Shoulder to shoulder sharing a burnt orange umbrella.
After several minutes of walking, you realize where they’re leading you, home. You can’t help but look at them out of the corner of your eyes, sometimes catching them staring back. It’s awkward, but not bad. Before long you’re in front of the oh-so-familiar house.
“You know, if I get sick and can’t finish the assignment it’s your fault.” You joke.
Part of you thinks they’re going to argue with you but instead, they turn to you a wide grin on their face, “You’re insufferable you know that.”
“You mean to say charming.”
Before they can reply the door opens and Emma walks out, quirking a brow at you and motioning to your outfit. “Why shouldn’t I be surprised, alright take 'em off.”
As you lean against the siding of the house you quickly kick off your shoes, and G closes their umbrella.
“It’s good to see you again.” Emma says smiling at G. “Let me go make you a cup of tea. Green right?”
When neither of you move Em turns to look at you. “Come on now, in or out?” She yells back as she makes her way to the kitchen. G fiddles with the handle of their umbrella, searching your face for any sign of what to do.
“Cam isn’t here.” You can’t help but mention it.
They meet your gaze, and suddenly all the frustration between you feels manageable, and maybe a little silly.
“I wouldn’t mind hanging out,” they start, taking a step closer and looking over the details of your face. “just the two of us.”
You take in a shaky breath, unsure if it’s due to their proximity and how it easily allows you to spot the beauty marks on their face, or because you can see just from their expression, they’re being completely honest.
“I-“your voice pitches, and you tell yourself it’s because of the day you’ve had. Not because of whatever you’re feeling or their expression. “I would like that too.”
