How I Vote with My Wallet | Cold Take

Comments

I grew up pretty poor, so practically I got one new game a year, and maybe 3-4 pre-owned *cheap* games, so I became savvy as a result. I bought/read games magazines, I tested games mates had or swapped with them, I remembered lessons from bad purchases. These are all lessons I carry into my adult years. I wait for some games to come down in price and I look at reviews from people I trust (you guys mostly!) but there’s still a game a year on average where I trust the seller and are happy to buy early or pre-order, namely Nintendo and Kojima (go physical or from the source, a lot of physical goodies can sometimes be grabbed. My TOTK luggage tag served me well!). The best lesson people can learn is to avoid hype and to buy what will actually make them happier, not what they’re being told to, but it’s easier said than done.

The only company I preorder from is Nintendo. I can’t remember them releasing a broken game. Doesn’t mean I will always preorder, but it’s the only company I will.

Sorry, peda fight

Gotta say I share Frost's opinion on wine. As much as I like booze in genera, wine is one of the few exceptions. I've never found one that really did it for me that also doesn't cost more than what I make in a year per bottle.

Wally Hackenslacker

LOL @Frost’s comments on wine

SchroKatt

I think you're being naive in thinking that if enough consumers vote with their wallets then change may happen. First, it's a big IF. Second, it won't happen. The industry has made it pretty clear they want what makes them money and feeds their ego. They would rather cut a million jobs than admit they were wrong about live services. Do you think any lessons were learned after "Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League"? It wasn't after that power suit game crashed and burned or after the Avengers live service game failed. Steph Sterling said it best, "Corporations want to make all the money now and next quarter they demand to make even more money."

Jason Youngberg

I can sort of see your point, I guess, but personally, I just read it as 'Oh cool, Frost has better impulse control than me!'

VMW

Let's have some more pedantry then. The sound for pense is actually a sound most English people struggle with (I know as someone with a name that has that sound). Ponce (pronounced pɒns) is not the same sound as pense (pɑ̃s), even ignoring when you pronounce the 'n' or not.

Nebasuke

Caution, patience, the skill to not let hype or coersive advertising trick you into preordering, these are things take time, energy, experience, and the ability to learn from that experience. Not everyone has those things; that is my point. But yes, for those who do it is sound advice.

Marshall Halleck

This reads like you felt personally attacked, which I definitely don't think was the point. As Nebasuke says above there was definitely some actionable advice here - be wary buying pre-orders from AAA, don't buy games you don't want just because they are on sale.

ergotpoisoning

"Aww, this is non-alcoholic: yeah you keep telling that to yourself."😳Wow! Frost calling out here.😆

Lil' Cass

I think you're throwing out survivorship bias a bit too quickly here. I don't even think the term applies here. Frost gives some concrete advice (as in helping to inform): * be careful with half price off, you might not need it at all and will save when not buying versus "saving" when buying it * don't buy pre-orders * be a patient gamer so you can wait for the lowest price * etc. I stopped here Just because companies abuse you and consumer laws can be improved (and should) doesn't mean people can't learn as well.

Nebasuke

Thank you for spreading information and being honest with your opinion Frost

Lil' Cass

My rules are similar and include that I'll only pre-order from a trusted small studio or indie. Never AAA. Frankly, I'm not even sure I'd get an early access game from a large developer. I don't need to pay to be their QA department, since studios who can afford it should pay their own QA people.

Thomas

I'm not a wine fan either but at least it's fruit based so you can class it as one of your recommended 5 a day of fruit and veg.

YellaChicken

This video feels more like you bragging about how savvy a consumer you are, albeit in an entertaining way, rather than sharing any usable information. You are writing this with some incredible survivorship bias and I'm not sure you quite recognize that, or that most of your philosophy isn't broadly applicable. It is easy to forget and start to see ourselves as the average and start to give advice on that assumption. You call it "bad budgeting", I'd call it baseline. Being informed costs work and time and is not something everyone can afford, nor has learned the value of. You, Frost, are one of the most informed buyers there are, especially when it comes to video games. Your last two lines recognize that, "... it does take a while to figure yourself out. It takes longer to get to a point where you can confidently stand your ground and say 'no deal.'" It is a skill like any other and it takes a lot of time and luck to build up. Elsewhere in your video you seem to acknowledge just how uncommon you are, 'unlike most people I have the rare ability not to form an addiction I can't afford'. Great, you're better than most people, what about those who have an addiction, or who are naturally susceptible? How is the guy who works 100 hours a week at the factory supposed to read a ToS when the most complicated contract they've ever read was what they signed when they got their job? Put on top of that 50+ years of lax consumer protection laws, we live in a time when it is easier than ever for companies to manipulate consumers into acting against their best interest. You talk about avoiding parasocial relationships and FoMo. Great, you're not susceptible or you've learned how to avoid letting them influence you. Good for you? Some people aren't so lucky, especially the younger audiences who have not even had the luxury of experience, let alone successfully learned from said experiences.

Marshall Halleck

Apologies in advance for the pedantry. "Je pense" is pronounced like "Je ponce." You said, "Je pants" which means "I pants." This is confusing because "pants" is usually a transitive verb, as in, "I pants you" or "I'm pantsing you right now." Therefore, "Je te pants" would've been more appropriate, or even "Je vous pants" if you're pulling down the pants of a stranger or someone above you socially.

Cory McLean

This reminds me of a youtube comment I read about Starfield around the time of its launch, to the tune of “actually quite excited to play this when it’s on sale for $20 in 5 years time with all the dlc and community mods”

Sam East

I love how one minute Frost is rightfully calling me out on my broken relationship with video games and the next he's not only describing wine as Welch's Grape Juice that was let out in the car for too long (a relatable mood I can relate to and that Deltarune can too) but also just talking about wine in general in the end credits😆

Lil' Cass

Well, this is considerably less bleak than last week's outing. Also good LORD, I played Hades 2 yesterday and the hype is so damn real. First Early Access I've bought since Darkest Dungeon and it was WORTH IT.
