And yet, Pal World shows that throwing everything into a game can be successful. Financially, at least.

That’s always been a thing though? Or damn near. Your reward for doing everything, or the hardest thing in the game (if there is a reward) is normally something that breaks it so you can start playing about and having fun. In the Yakuza series for instance it’s an item that basically gives you unlimited super moves, which means you can just mess about doing them without worrying. I’ve never gotten to that point, and I’m completely fine with that, but there’s a few games I have ticked over into 100% or after doing some insane challenge and I was a bit disappointed my only “reward” was seeing a trophy pop up. You’ve already done the hardest thing, the game has no other way to challenge you, so why not give you a new way to play it instead?

Kinda the big problem is modern game design has completely lost all sense of discipline and throws in basically every mechanic that the devs think was in a game people liked. It's even worse than the days when every game had a terrible forced stealth section completely at odds with the core gameplay, because Metal Gear was popular; now they have entire gameplay elements thrown in because it was popular somewhere else, regardless of whether or makes sense or adds anything more than clutter.

Just signed up....get Ludo some doggie treats before sending her back down. :-) Far as the Looter Shooter phase...buckle in folks. MMOs may be a dying genre, but their offspring are still out there fighting. We now have Looter mechanics in almost every game genre: RPGs, strategy games, FPS, racing, sports. Singleplayer or multi, online or not...the worst aspect of MMOs is going to be here for at LEAST another fifteen years. I won't be surprised if TES VI launches with the same kind of Loot mechanics we see in KtJL right now.

I just don't understand how paid cosmetics rake in money, so much more interested in a reward for playing a game I like than a reward for spending $2

Ezra

I’m tired of the reward for beating the hardest side content being gear that makes the game easier. The reason to beat Malenia is to say that you (or your build) did it, not because she drops the Sword Of Elden Beast Deletion.
