Marvel's Editing Is the Cruelest Cut of All | The Backdrop

Damn this was interesting. I’ve largely checked out of the MCU but it was nice to see why it’s actually gone downhill instead of endless cries of “woke”. I will say that sometimes films are getting longer over a series. John Wick 4 was the first time I thought one of the films was too long, No Time to Die and Spectre felt so much longer than the other Craig Bonds and although I’m happy that Dune and Dune 2 have the confidence and time to be a long and epic story, it’s not a trend I’m necessarily liking in some of my other fare.

It is so good to see a technical analysis of what made these two projects fail to hit their mark rather than predictable (and often misguided/exaggerated) criticism you get for lack luster MCU releases. You actually made me realise why these were so distinctly uncomfortable to watch, even though I didn't actually dislike them overall. I think I was feeling the better story buried in both of them that was lost in post-production.

Part of the reason why I love editing so much is because of all the stuff I get to see behind the end result of the film. Stuff that gets cut or adjusted is always a lot of fun to get a fuller picture of the director's intended vision. Some of the most fun I've had working on independent films was just sitting down and talking to the director about what works, what doesn't work, and how we can accomplish those goals with what we have. Screenplays are always a fount of these ideas and I hate that releasing them after a set period of time for public consumption isn't standard practice in the film industry. Hearing that the editing of these films has fallen so far disheartens me for my intended career path. I've sat in front of footage thinking how I can make something worth and knowing the intensity of editing as a process and how familiar editors become with the footage hurts to see thrown away to appeal to as broad an audience as possible. The people in charge of these movies are not incompetent, but they are forced to act as such to appease financiers who have no business directing, writing, or editing films for public consumption. Nothing makes me love filmmaking more than just being on set and watching everyone move like a well oiled machine in tandem and knowing that it all goes to waste over a few decisions made by faceless sacks of money makes it feel pointless in the end. I love the editing in films like Dune, Baby Driver, and Pulp Fiction but knowing all of this makes it harder to remain passionate about it
