If You Enjoyed Darren Mooney's Writing...
Added 2023-11-09 23:33:33 +0000 UTCthen you'll want to be signed up to the $10 tier...
Darren's writing on The Escapist was a huge source of pride for us and we want it to continue and be supported directly. He's legitimately one of the best film / tv critics on the internet, and is an absolute encyclopedia of movie knowledge.
If you've read his work before, you already know this, but if you haven't, you're in for an absolute treat. While we don't have plans for a website, we want to continue making sure he gets to write for us, along with making a new video series with Omar in the coming weeks.
In the Frame never got the attention it truly deserved back on The Escapist YouTube channel, and we're super excited to give his work a Second Wind here. (That worked out, eh?)
We're going to release a new article once a week on Friday's right here on Patreon as an additional perk to our $10 tier going forward to sweeten the deal even more.
If you haven't read his work yet, you're missing out. Go check it out here: In the Frame Archives - The Escapist (escapistmagazine.com) and don't worry about giving The Escapist traffic, his articles deserve it.

This is why I really love you guys! The support and admiration you show for each other goes before everything. Looking forward to get more Darren in my life! Now, go to bed Chief Nick.

2023-11-10 09:47:19 +0000 UTCIf I wasn't already at a high enough tier, this would be reason enough for me to upgrade.

2023-11-10 08:42:24 +0000 UTC@Knacks totally understand. We're not trying to nickle and dime though, we are trying to add additional value to tiers, and the videos Darren does will be in the $5 tier as expected. These articles are just something extra and the money raised from paywalling them will help pay for Darren to do the work. We're starting this with literally $0, so if we can make tiers more enticing and add more value to them, that's just the reality we're in that we don't have the luxury of releasing everything for free anymore to drive views.

2023-11-10 02:55:24 +0000 UTCI get your frustration over the pricing. I just took umbrage at your threatening to withdraw support because you don't like the tier structure. You sau this is your first time donating and that is valid, but keep in mind they are also figuring out this Patteon. Im sorry I called you a jackass. As already pointed out, the tier rewards don't go away, so that is something to consider. Cheers.

2023-11-10 02:11:00 +0000 UTCExtremely happy this is happening. A suggestion for the column - maybe add newsletter-style shorts at the bottom that direct people to some of the bes twitter threads Darren has done in the past week. His watch along threads are great, and given you have more freedom about how to format it, why not use it to highlight them. I dunno if Darren would want to be this regimented, but if Darren knew he was watching and tweeting along to a particular film over the weekend, he could even give advance notice of a watch along, or do it here or on the discord, to make it more of a community thing.

2023-11-10 02:09:35 +0000 UTCI don't want to admi how long it took me too realise that my £8.50 tier was the one that Nick meant when he said $10

2023-11-10 02:04:22 +0000 UTCHi Knacks, absolutely understand that if you're new to patreon it might seem a bit strange. Patreon isn't like kickstarter because its an ongoing process, so its very common to have different content provided to different tiers. That's because on a monthly basis its not feasible to just offer perks to justify people spending more, as perks can be very labour intensive to provide, rely on a certain level of exclusivity or won't always appeal to everyone. Also this is a bit of a special case as Second Wind wasn't originally planning to have written content, but so many us highlighted how much we value Darren's columns, that they've added it as a patreon content to allow it to continue. Remember unlike when it was on the escapist website, releasing it on patreon means there's no advertising venue, so this is being funded solely by patrons.

2023-11-10 02:03:16 +0000 UTCAlso, could you consider refraining from name-calling. I didn't mean to insult anyone and getting called a jackass just for presenting an opinion on the pricing seems a little harsh. Well, I have heard that internet can be like that... :P

2023-11-10 01:51:45 +0000 UTCIMHO matters regarding to pricing, delivery and access to the content are all business decisions. And Second Wind is a business. I feel that giving feedback on business decisions to a business shouldn't raise too many eyebrows. And that such feedback is also a kindness to the business we here all want to support. Also community discussion regarding what works and what doesn't and what kinds of feelings the pricing etc generate, is probably pretty golden too, for the business. Which is why I didn't put my original comment only in a private message. If there's a community that people find or create around Second Wind, sweet. But a community that can't deal with critical voices is inherently in a bad way (again IMHO). And I do mean just critical voices --hostilities within a community is another matter of course. I didn't think I was being too much of a dunce with how I worded my original comment, but English isn't my first language so apologies if I sounded too harsh. The Kickstarter comparison was the only one I could make, trying to tell what kind of vibes this announcement gave me. I think Kickstarter comparison was also apt because no content has been published yet, so it feels iffy to get asked for more money. At a later date once the business is up and running and weekly content getting published, it'll be much less frustrating trying to evaluate what any extra content would be worth to me - and current content also. One other thing: The community here is, as far as I can tell also gated by money. If you can no longer pay, you'll lose access to the discord etc community places, or did I miss something? So that too is a little frownworthy :/ As said, this is the first time I joined a Patreon campaign - I am that excited to support a bunch of people whose Stuff I've enjoyed a lot over the years and who are now starting a new business that I'd really like to see succeed. (See, I CAN manage a single positive sentence if I really try *coughcoughblush*). So I don't really have a baseline what to expect, Patreon-wise. But didn't really think there'd be content tiers, just tiers of perks like 'sponsor free' etc, but that everyone could enjoy the actual content. The announcement video etc. felt kind wholesome, but then these half a dozen tiers, well -- yeah. The tiered content and discord channels etc. also split the community, a little like paid expansion packs might for an online computer game :)

2023-11-10 01:48:22 +0000 UTCYou complain about the price, but not being a negative jackass is free, ya know. Hell, you can just pay $10 later on and peruse through all that content once a bunch of it has been accrued and then dip back to the $5 tier.

2023-11-10 01:40:36 +0000 UTCI was referring to how there is no 'A' in the sentence in the post. It just says 'article once week'

2023-11-10 01:22:12 +0000 UTCUnfortunately we don't own the brand of In the Frame anymore, so we'll sort out what it is next!
Nick Calandra
2023-11-10 00:42:50 +0000 UTCI agree, it makes sense to gate content like behind the scenes and stuff like that, which is meant for really dedicated fans, but gating what seems like "main content", and under such a high tier (120$/yr is more than I feel comfortable spending on a content creator honestly) feels FOMO-inducing and a kinda nickel-and-dimey.
Renton Treznor
2023-11-10 00:12:23 +0000 UTCIf you don’t want the content don’t pay for it. No need to bring negativity to an overly positive community. Vent for sure, but don’t affiliate genuine creators and professionals with piss poor Kickstarter campaigns.

2023-11-10 00:06:03 +0000 UTC> He's legitimately one of the best film / tv critics on the internet Darren's legitimately one of the best and most insightful critics, full stop. He's easily worth the $14.50 Canada-bucks alone!

2023-11-09 23:59:08 +0000 UTCUpgrading it is :)

2023-11-09 23:57:38 +0000 UTCI mean, it's Patreon. You should give because you want to support a venture vs solely for the benefits. Although I'd argue overall this isn't a FOMO situation. If you can't do $10/mo now but could later, it's alllll still going to be here for you to peruse. None of the Patreons I've joined delete content after two weeks or anything like that. This has been in the works for like two days, theyre still figuring out........ Literally Everything. If you don't like that maybe come back in a few months once they find a stride. If you truly don't feel like they deserve $5 but want to pitch in, there's a $1 tip tier you can join. 🤷

2023-11-09 23:52:58 +0000 UTCWe like to add things to our tiers quite often, we try to make each one very much worth your money. As we said before, the Patreon wasn't even ready to launch when people found it, so we're still coming up with things to add in to make each tier fun.
Nick Calandra
2023-11-09 23:52:09 +0000 UTCYes Credit and Sponsor-free.

2023-11-09 23:51:26 +0000 UTCHe is a film critic that whose style I would describe as grounded and affable. He mostly wrote about franchise stuff for Escapist. I am upping my membership for it.

2023-11-09 23:51:09 +0000 UTCReally happy to be here :) But which one is the $10 tier? I imagine it is the Credit & Sponsor-Free because I see all tiers in my local currency, so this would be the one that makes sense.
João Schubnell
2023-11-09 23:48:29 +0000 UTCThis makes me peeved. The $5 I already went with is more than I pay for any other Youtube channel. And now this -- it feels just like all those toxic FOMO-dependent Kickstarter campaigns. Tempted to cancel the money altogether.
