The Homies

Thanks for the info I read it all :)

The Homies

I forgot to mention: You wondered if that Lieutenant was dead when they carried his body into the jungle. It’s a Marine tradition to never leave a fallen Marine behind, whether he’s alive or dead.

One thing to keep in mind about the Japanese naval bombardment of the Marines. During Band of Brothers, the Germans were using standard 88mm and 105mm field guns at Bastogne to hit the airborne dug into the Bois-Jac forest. As intense and horrifying as that was, the Japanese were using much larger naval guns to hit the Marines. The heavy cruisers were firing 203mm shells and the battleships Kirishima and Hiei were firing 356mm shells. So German shells weighed in roughly 10kg and 15kg while the Japanese shell weight was around 126kg and 625kg for the naval shells. An altogether different level of intensity.

The dead Marine wasn't Sidney from the first episode. The first episode follows the US 1st Marine Regiment. The second episode is following the US 7th Marine Regiment, so the story is covering more than 1 unit like Band of Brothers did.

Enjoyed this reaction very much, guys. The type of attack by the Japanese was called “Banzai”. It was effective against the Chinese, who ran. The Japanese thought the Americans would run too, but instead they were mowed down by machine guns. I believe Guadalcanal was the last campaign where the Japanese used Banzai attacks because they lost an entire regiment there. After that, they became much more savvy and fought differently. John Basilone, the sergeant who had burns on his hands from carrying machine guns back and forth, was probably the most celebrated hero of the Pacific campaign. Because of his actions, those two machine gun pits held off 3,000 Japanese attackers for 3 days. They had no sleep, not enough ammunition, and on the last day only Basilone and 2 other Marines survived. He fought them with his pistol and a machete in hand to hand fighting in the end. He was decorated with the Medal of Honor, the greatest award a serviceman can receive in the US military. Leckie wrote that when they were climbing the ropes to get onboard the ship, they were so weak from malaria, hepatitis, jungle rot and malnutrition so the sailors had to help pull them up. This was just the beginning. Right now, it doesn’t seem so bad but it gets worse and worse as they got closer to Japan.
