Interesting, as someone who watched all of the previous entries in the franchise (and loved them), I feel like this movie starting from ground zero actually made it harder for me to enjoy. First of all, this is like the third time we see this particular setup (4th if you count the TV show), where a character finds the book, plays the recording with a translation of the book and promptly summons the evil spirit. It is starting to feel like too much of a retread to be interesting anymore. At the same time, the amount of pandering to the people who did see the originals also felt over the top, with this movie recreating a lot of moments from the previous ones, mostly Evil Dead 2 (the eye swallowing scene, the "Dead by dawn!" chants, etc.) and winking at you way too obviously while doing that. As for the lore, the series has always been pretty fast and loose with it. Deadites are demons, they are explicitly described as such on several occasions, and they do come from actual Hell, but god and/or angels were only ever mentioned in passing in the "extended universe" stuff. So while demonic in nature, a chainsaw to the face seems to be a more reliable way to deal with them than any kind of exorcism.
