It started with the character Arsene Lupin from these French books and now we got all these Japanese versions like Lupin the III, Kaitou, and like you said in Persona. Arsene Lupin was created to be the reverse of popular book detectives like Sherlock. Which is why the author is kinda cloning Conan, since Phanton Thieves and mystery detectives are two opposite sides of the same coin Also you're right about this author loving his Conan/Ran clones. His weakness are childhood friends who act like they can't stand each other

2025-02-06 18:03:31 +0000 UTCmagic kaito is actually older than detective conan! it was gosho aoyama's first manga and initially began publication in 1987, whereas he started writing conan in 1994. its still ongoing to this day but only has around 40 chapters and only updates once every 5-7 years these days. you're onto something though with the idea that this series is a way for gosho to let loose and have a little fun. he loves this project dearly and has even said that while he plans to finish conan one day, he hopes to keep writing magic kaito forever. also, "kaitou" is roughly translated to phantom thief!! its the same thing lol. persona 5 put the concept in front of a lot more people, but it has a long history, largely inspired by Maurice Leblanc's Arsene Lupin character from the early 1900s. Kaitou Kid's aesthetic and disguise skills are specifically references to the original lupin stories. this is similar to how much of detective conan is inspired by sherlock holmes and other detective novels. gosho aoyama just really likes his classic crime literature lol (also note that "kaitou", the word meaning "phantom thief", is distinct from "kaito", a common japanese first name lol)
