With the news that game developer Crystal Dynamics was recently acquired from its venerated yet infamously misguided owner, Square Enix, fresh hope has sprung for new installments from the various beloved properties Square has long been sitting on. Franchises like Deus Ex and Legacy of Kain have a chance to live again, along with, of course, Tomb Raider.

Now, I'm aware the Tomb Raider series has hardly been languishing these last few years the way the others have. In fact, we've had three recent Tomb Raider games, all the while living in a world without the Gex reboot that absolutely everyone without exception has been clamoring for. So yes, Tomb Raider is far from forgotten, but I'm still going to complain because I'm a petty little man and I didn't like how they went about the reboot trilogy.

Here's Reinbach's hot take, everyone: I feel that modern reboot Lara is actually a regression from classic Lara when it comes to being a positive feminist icon. Let's compare. Classic Lara went on dangerous adventures because she wanted to, she collected priceless relics for kicks, and if you got in her way you were going to get capped in the head, no matter how significant a scientific find your dumbass existence might be to the world. She had agency, confidence, and most of all, she seemed to be having fun.

With modern Lara, to be fair, I get what they were trying to do with her look, at least. The old focus on sex appeal was something that had to go in this day and age if you want to sell a product to a mass market, I get that. Those breasts had to shrink, and here come the cargo pants. What I don't get is why she had to have so much of her personality stripped away. Modern Lara seems bound by a questionable (and not always consistent) sense of duty to do what she does. From what I've seen, it rarely seems like she actually wants to be involved in her own adventures. I also find the recurring theme of daddy issues to be an odd fit for the character. Classic Lara's origin was that she got disowned by her rich family for being just too fucking metal, and I thought that suited her perfectly before it was ret-conned.

So if the reboot was the low point, when was the peak? In my opinion, the character was at her best during the PS3 era. She was redone visually with a more realistic but still stylized look that amped up the sex appeal, she retained the best parts of her personality, and the games themselves still hold up well today. Now, I know it's a long shot, but my hope is that with new owners, we just might get a return to form with the next game. When a reboot doesn't set the world on fire, (and Square consistently complained that Tomb Raider didn't) it seems to be an increasingly common practice to just go back to the original continuity with a crowd-pleasing numbered sequel. I would personally love to see a return of this Lara, improbable as it may be.

But what do you think? Am I talking out of my ass here? I could be. I lost interest after Rise of the Tomb Raider and never even played Shadow. So if Lara suddenly became a fun-loving badass ball of overt sex appeal right at the end of that game, I wouldn't know it. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this one!

Hell no! (Hey Reinbach, great to be back lol, was a patron in like 2016, when Casey was still figuring things out, so proud of the journey and happy to be able to support your work again) my favorite Tomb Raider game to this day is Tomb Raider: Legends. The wit and knowledge she has is the most appealing traits of her for me. Yes, she's very athletic and sexy as well, but that's not her personality. She had trauma, but worked to get past it. I loved that she was extremely knowledgeable about the history and was usually the first one to connect the dots. My issue with the new games, is kinda like you said. There's no passion in her pursuit. It's obsession. Big difference. One is a choice, the other is compulsory.

You're alright! XD

Reinbach

Man, i just read what i wrote. Was i high?? So many typos, sorry 😅

David

I think that was what chilled me the most playing the old games, the way terrifying new enemies were introduced with zero fanfare. No cut scene, no camera zoom, just a big fucking bear lunging out of the darkness when you least expect it. Freaky shit!

Reinbach

Doesn’t help there’s been an obvious double standard about it.

Lord Washington

I confess that the only reason that she isn't topless is that without the shorts as well, too much of the iconic look would have been missing for the character to be instantly recognizable. XD

Reinbach

Same!

Reinbach

Sounds cool! I'm actually going to keep an eye out for that one and see if I can get it on sale.

Oh boy, tomb raider on the PC so many happy memories. Totally agree classic over modern. I actually quiet enjoyed the first of the modern reboot. The level design flowed nicely. Where as the second just felt grindy. I think where the downfall happened to me was when she was suddenly installed with a guilt chip. Like oh no I killed a human.... I feel bad. Next scene she's gunning down squads with not a care in the world. Playing through the original game again on the PS1 and OMG I was playing on easy mode on the PC being able to save whenever I wanted XD also I never realised how empty the levels are. They are big and mostly silent. But as soon as the music kicks in you are frantically looking around going, heck what's trying to kill me! Anyways I could write tons about this. Let's hope a return to the fun loving old ways but with the modern look. Nothing wrong with being a sexy badass in my books. Loving the picture btw :) she looks happy, like they've just survived an adventure and now enjoying life. More please! XD

I will say it's interesting to see you draw a character known for the TITTAYS and draw her with the top still on, and even with smaller breasts than your last two pinups, lol! But hell yeah to the DP! We almost never see that since it's such a bitch to draw (especially in pinups), but I like it! The gritty green color used for her top also kinda reminds me of your older style with the "comic grit" backdrop on everything XD.

ScuzzBucket

I would like to see Lara be unashamedly sexy again. Ive grown tired of people acting like sex appeal is bad.

Lord Washington

I hope Crystal Dynamics can do betther now that they're not under Square. I see this as what happened to Destiny after the got away from Activision, so my hopes are high. As for the reboots, i like them but i get your point and, in fact, i also thinks that, even there are good things on these games, it fails on some aspects (daddy issies, plotlines that go nowhere, etc). But, and here ins the "funny" thing... my favorite was Shadow of the Tomb Raider. I felt a bit that, on that game, Lara Wars more "fuck this shit, fuck that, fuck him fuck everybody", and even goes full Rambo on a camp.

David

I'll be watching for a trailer for sure. If I'm critical it's because I'm a fan, I want to like the series so I'll give any new game they do a chance.

Reinbach

Thanks for the suggestion! :)

Reinbach

I'm a big fan of the series, another RE pin up is never too far off! ;D

Reinbach

I did not know that! :O

Reinbach

Now that I can get behind! It became kind of a running gag that all three reboot games seemed to be pitching the same "this is the one where she becomes the Tomb Raider" tagline. If they're finally going somewhere with that I'm all for it.

Reinbach

Understood! XD

Reinbach

Ooh that's tough. There's so much lore it would be a shame to throw it all away and start over. It was also insanely complicated lore though, and the surviving voice actors are likely old as rocks by now. Though man I couldn't imagine anyone else playing Kain or Raziel. Maybe a soft reboot? New story set in the same continuity?

Reinbach

I actually realized today that I seem to have lost my PS1 original of the first game, thankfully, it's dirt cheap on ebay and I've got it on the way. I look forward to being reminded what a pain in the ass it is to have limited save points sometime next week. XD

Reinbach

You should watch Critical Drinker's stream with Melanie Mac, they perfectly sum up what's happened to Tomb Raider over the years.

Kudos707

Said this in discord. Couldn't get into the original games and even the later Ps3 X360 era games. Trying to play them now was a brain grind. The modern TRs functioned better gameplay wise but this Lara was just an agenda. Where as the old Lara was pulpy and fun. Maybe the new owners will bring back the old Lara, who knows. I'm curious what they do.

Jariah Synn

Give me some resident evil baby

Matthew Cronin

I'm with you, man. I loved the trilogy started with TL Legend. I tried the newer trilogy and it didn't feel like tomb raider. I would love for them to go back to the more classic adventures. On a fun note, you knew you could unlock the soul reaver in tomb raider legend, right?

Nikuthulhu

I could not disagree more with your Tomb Raider take. And you should know that they are not abandoning reboot Lara. Next game is supposed to have aspects of both OG Lara and reboot Lara, kinda melding them together.

Licorice Lain

I want "classic" Lara Croft back about as much as I want Duke Nukem back. 0%

Molten Reactor

If you were going to pitch a new Legacy of Kain game, would it be a continuation or a remake

Dick Don't call me Dick The Cock Johnson The Cock Johnson

Angel of Darkness was my absolute favourite as well as the original trilogy I still have for PS1
