Ketil is a coward who can't stand by his own morels. He wants to be a good man and thinks of himself as one but lacks the confidence and strength to be one. But I do blame the wife the way she worded it Arnheid had been conspiring with 2 other slaves to run away and had betrayed him. I wonder if he had known the full story and that she was pregnant before he thought she was lying maybe it would have played out differently but maybe not.

Marsuvies Black

I'm sure Ketil thinks that he's been trying to be a good and fair master, but, with an imbalance of power like this, there's no such thing as fair. As soon as one thing goes wrong for him (tbf, it's a very big thing that went wrong for him), he uses Arnheid as a thing to beat down. He never saw her as a human. He never saw her as the love of his life. He saw a woman that he could take advantage of. A woman who had no choice but to comfort him. He didn't even care about what she did. He just cared that she tried to leave him. He thinks he's been fair and good to her, but we know the truth, even if he's convinced himself otherwise

In my view, Ketil used Arnheid's body to soothe his anxieties from the start, this was just brought to the extreme, and clearly his intent was to keep doing it. He only loves her as long as he can use her. It's probably one of the hardest episodes to watch of any anime, because it's so raw and tragic.

One thing I love about this show is how much it exemplifies how we all can go from good to evil or evil to good. No matter how much we want to believe we'd never do something if a very specific set of circumstances happen in a very specific order we could end up doing things we'd never wouldve thought was possible. Long story short everyone has a breaking point. I like to think of it as a tree. There may only be 1 route that leads to a specific leaf that takes us from good to evil or evil to good but if we go travel along that exact path we'll find that leaf. I think Ketil and Thorfinn are perfect examples of each.
