Canute was indeed described as an absolutely gorgeous man, some I've read even called him "feminine", but I can't find the source on that. The two armies get confused and can't recognize friend from foe is so good thematically, even though it's mostly just for tension and laughs in this moment.

There's good in having some distance in describing a culture from the outside, but having the culture describe itself is incredibly valuable.
