This episode is so uncalled for. I CAME TO LAUGH - NOT TO CRY.

If you like emotional anime like this episode, you will absolutely love Your Lie In April. This episode reminded me of it for some reason. I don't think I've felt anything so deeply because of a show, like I did with Your Lie In April, I would love to see you watch it one day.

Hammer

It's not just that she didn't pay it back in time or was "holding out on money," she was short on the money she owed them because she took a chunk of it out to buy her daughter the dress for her birthday, something special for a "mundane" life. So sad.

Jon Smith

Huh? Did it disappear because it was a long story? I'm re-writing it. Silky(person) was obviously an advanced ballet player. And there is a stereotype in Japan that it is the wealthy who can learn ballet. Silky (person) does not speak, but Silky (evil spirit) speaks Japanese in an exaggerated version of the upper-class character's speech, which is called “ojousama-kotoba” (young lady's language), a standard Japanese manga expression. There was no picture of her husband in her room. It is hard to imagine that she created debts through extravagance, since she lives a simple life and works diligently (prostitution is a tragedy), and it is thought that her husband made the debts and ran away. From her inability to rely on her parents, we can assume that her marriage to her husband was opposed by her parents. Based on the above, many people interpret the story as based on the tragic formula (there are many stories with the same pattern but different details) of a naive young woman who is tricked into eloping with a bad man who is after her money, but he reveals his true nature and runs away, leaving her in debt. The official version is not explicitly stated, so take it as one of many interpretations.

lifecycle of Dandadan: - goofy stuff happens - unpredictable action scene - soulcrushing and beautiful backstory that makes you roll into a ball and cry your eyes out - more goofy stuff

Deymjen

its right here folks, the worst take of all time

This anime is every genre

One of the reasons why it is assumed that Silky (human) used to be a child of a rich family is that she was an advanced ballet student. In Japan, there is a strong image that “a child who can learn ballet = a child from a wealthy family. Silky (human) does not speak, but the Japanese spoken by Silky (evil spirit) is an exaggerated version of the manga-like “upper class speech style,” which also suggests that she was raised in an upper class family. As for why it is assumed that the partner was a bad man, if it was a welcome marriage, Silky (human) would have been able to rely on her parents when her husband was gone, so at least she would not have been prostituting herself and would have had someone to help raise the child. If not, then we can assume that her husband was an unwelcome kind of man. When we see how diligent she is in working hard and saving money, we can assume that the debt was also created by the man. Given Silky's affectionate nature, we believe that if her husband was a good man, it would be unnatural for her not to have pictures of him or descriptions of her daughter talking about her father. Thus, “A rich young lady is cheated by a bad man who is after her money and elopes with her. Although they eloped, the man thought that if the young lady cried to her parents' house, she would not be lacking in money. However, the young lady refused to rely on her parents' family to keep her love alive, and she was willing to go through hardship even if she was poor. A man with a broken plan reveals his true nature, abuses a woman, and then disappears~” So many people think that the story is based on a typical story. (Typicaly but even though the patterns are similar, the details vary widely. In Japan, there are ghost stories in which a woman who has suffered such an experience becomes an evil spirit and curses the man to death.) However, as long as it is not spoken in the main story, this does not mean that it is the correct answer, so each interpretation is fine. Sorry for the long post. Thanks for reading this far.

Where did the theory that she used to be rich and eloped with an evil man come from?? The rest is pretty obvious, but that first part seems kind of random

Nat

I had to actively push myself to watch this reaction🥲

Roboton

The room with money on the bedside table, that was her sexworker job

DeetsViBre

There is a notion that ballet is a rich man's pastime. The theory is that Silkie was once a rich young lady who was tricked into eloping with an evil man, who left her with debts and a child, and she even prostituted herself to raise her beloved child in order to repay the debts. And the Bad guys were debt collectors . Silkie bought dresses and cakes for the child, and because of their modest extravagance, she wasn't unable to repay the debt and the men kidnapped the child. Her daughter was the meaning of her life, and when she lost her daughter, she lost the meaning of her life and died. Her strong resentment at having her daughter taken from her and her strong attachment to her daughter made her a distorted creature. It is a sad story in which Silky's motherhood and true love.

よに 。

One popular theory is that these men were loan sharks or had sth to do with her prostitution job. Another things I've seen floating around is that they were probably Yakuza. In the 90s Yakuza frequently extorted "protection" money out of low-income areas and if you couldn't pay them they would traffick women and girls. It is one of the topics japanese media doesn't really comment on (japan has a bunch of topics they've lowkey banned from stories), so some, especially japanese, fans believe that this is a "subtle" commentary on that.

AiraKT

brother what you have just typed out is the epitome of ignorance and a complete lack of understanding of both what happened in the story and of reality

bertaunth

I've seen this episode 4 times and it's impossible not to get overwhelmed with emotion.

Mawb

You really think those people abducted her daughter over the cost of one dress and some dancing classes? She was obviously in much deeper debt than that, those expenses were comparatively small and guess what? Poor people in debt deserve to have nice things too.

draeonic 🪼

Honestly Im too fragile for stuff like this lol, I couldnt even bring myself to watch the full length reaction. A surprisingly deep commentary on grief and loss. And of course, a reminder of the most important things in life. A reason to be grateful as well

Nadeem L

This episode man😭 So the mother was taking all sorts of jobs to put food on the table for her daughter, including selling her body. The men that came to their apartment were loansharks if I remember correctly. We can at least take some comfort in that the manga has a panel showing the mother and her real daughter reunited in the afterlife. Thanks to Aira’s words the mother was able to find peace after all.

Jacob Christoffersson

We did not realize that was her jumping. SO SAD now we're crying again. 💔

Haylo

😭😭

Haylo

unfortunaly i can just watch your reaction after the episode, can't watch this a second time because i don't wanna start my friday with crying. 😭

MrMegaman94

Was waiting for this. I already loved this show and was hyped cuz of all the buzz around the manga getting adapted but this ep right here... the internet cried collectively

pmreez

the biggest similarity to OP are the sad backstories. So be prepared for what's coming. 😅

MrMegaman94

Flexie 😄

MrMegaman94

waited for this

wildwilf

Watched a reaction from a professional ballerina and she mentioned that all the moves in the dance were actual ballet. The animators likely had a professional demonstrate and they copied their movements.

William Morales

Talk about completely missing the point of the story. Clearly you have no idea what real struggle looks like. Take this ignorant comment down.

William Morales

When I said series that’s what I meant. Wasn’t thinking of the entire show since it hasn’t all came out yet of course

Wesley Lambert

Been waiting for this episode ever since y’all stared the series!

Nat

There’s only been one season so far, I’m sure there will be plenty of episodes that are just as good if not better

Nat

I second this. Something seriously wrong with that person

Nat

The manga is much easier to understand, she was indeed a prostitute. The bad men were most likely loan sharks she never paid back in time, or maybe she was holding out money from prostituion from them. Also her dancing at the end she was really on top of a building and she jumped off from the guilt she felt losing her daughter.

Adam Aucoin

I don’t think I’ve ever left a blatantly hateful comment on Patreon and if I weren’t in fear of being banned from this channel I’d probably say the nastiest stuff to you right now lol anyways seek help

KIMI

the one mistake was the dress and it's still understandable, no parent can be blamed for a situation like this

Tobi.SG

Dang it I was hoping they didn't

NOIR Weldon

Every new anime episode that's really good becomes #1 for a few days. But that shows this is a good episode

Waver

Jesus there is something extremely wrong with you

Waver

Ah, the good episode of the series. It’s sad but she was a terrible mother. If she hadn’t wasted all that money on ballet lessons and pretty dresses she could have paid back the loan sharks and her daughter wouldn’t have been trafficked away into a living hell. It’s so stupid of her but I still feel sorry for her even though it was all her fault. I feel much more sorry for the kid, though. She needed a better parent. One who might have at least tried to get her back instead of just giving up and suiciding off the roof. Life sucks for that kid.

Caradoc Elmet

It was for acrobatic silky and her daughter 😭 in the manga, they’re both finally reunited in the after life so it’s implied that they did sadly kill the daughter.

Andie

Id like to think that when Aira asks for them to move on to a better world, She's talking about not only The Acrobatic Silky but also her mother. Part of me feels like there's a life bond with the Aura that in some way made Aira see Acro through the eyes of her daughter. So calling her mommy was her way of getting to actually say goodbye to her own mother.

NOIR Weldon

Pretty much , which ads to her having apologized for not having or giving enough to her kid despite her giving everything for her from her body to the very end her life.

NOIR Weldon

Welcome to reality folks!

Dandy Zoran

series? you mean this season

Mojira

no those were her pimps. but yes

Degenerick

Acro silky did many jobs to survive and being a sex worker was one of them also the scene with her dancing on the roof was her last dance because she knew she would never see her daughter again so she killed herself by jumping

Wsgyan

Remember when this was a derpy goofy show about a boy having his balls and thingy stolen by ghosts? Pepperidge farm remembers!

Cursed HellSpawn

Where she then… you know…

cooc

In my opinion. This is the best episode in the series!

Wesley Lambert

Man, time to cry again

wanira 11

Didn't expect the "haha weiner" show to gut punch me like that...

Joshspice

Think Haylo was spot on with her analysis. She woman was a sex worker and the men attacking and taking away her daughter probably were loan sharks or something.

Frits__

Yeah, the first time I watched it I didn't realize that she jumps off a building in that sequence. It's more explicit in the manga.

Shulman

The backstories in this story hit like a rock. This is one of many that are just incredible.

JNelso

It wasn’t obvious but in the flashback when acro silky was dancing, in the manga she was dancing on a rooftop

Finikera602

I could be wrong but this episode was the highest rated anime episode on imdb

KevUrb

Awesome! i've been waiting for you guys to react to this. 10/10 episode!

Deonte Hall

Ive seen so many reactions of this episode, and i cry every damn time T_T
