This backstory arc breaks my heart. Robin's story is so sad but it's the destruction of the tree of knowledge that breaks my heart. it's the Christians burning the great library of Alexandria. It's unforgiveable. Luffy's order to Sogeking at the end really met my mood perfectly.

When you started watching One Piece, I wondered how you'd react to this episode ❤️ Luffy is the king of emotional intelligence, he knows Robin is terrified of everyone leaving her because of the burden that comes with being close to her: the government will always deem her one of the biggest threats ever. And thus, he declares war openly, reassuring her that he knows this, and that he and the crew will take on anything that comes after them for her. Found family is such a big thing in One Piece, and it resonates deeply with me. I cried my eyes out yet again ❤️ thank you for letting me relive this journey like the first time again. Keep 'em coming!

Aokiji could have solo'd the whole strawhats if he wanted to easily without even lifting a finger. He let them live. He's a really good dude imo. He's just following chain of command because he's an important figure that has to follow what he's told. Remember what Garp said in the live action about following your code, Aokiji took the role where he has to do what he's commanded to do because he is that admiral level. I wouldn't say hate or dislike, just have different morals. He's not a terrible dude like the rest of these clown government people. Its really hard to see this in the moment because of how many emotions are going on in BOTH times Aokiji showed up, but if you reflect, he's not a despicable person. Also, for the record, I am specifically talking about what's known currently, and this was my initial thought of him at this current moment when I first watched. I don't mean to steer anything, this is just my genuine perspective at this current moment in time in the story.

I highly recommend watching the "I want to live" scene dubbed. Robins Dub VA Stephanie Young absolutely crushed it. In interviews she said the emotional weight of the moment was so significant that she felt a deep sense of pressure and responsibility to do justice to the character, and the One Piece fandom. Plus you get to hear what some of the other characters sound like dubbed, which is always fun IMO!

I know we keep saying this but the portrayal of non toxic masculinity in this with Franky is great. I love that he's this big tough boss of a gang of hoodlums and yet is always moved to tears and openly bawls when he's moved (with this hilarious palm gesture too)

Idk if anyone else has asked for it, but I'm petitioning for y'all to react to the "I want to live" moment in the English Dub. The Japanese VAs nailed it (of course), but for me, the English dub of that moment is phenomenal. Stephanie Young, who voices Robin in the dub, really gave it her all. Her voice in that scene gives me chills everytime.

It’s never explained outright, but it is a little bit clearer in the manga that during Saul’s rampage *he* destroyed 5 warships, then the marines destroyed the 6th ship with the refugees. So the WG had 6 destroyed warships they had to explain away, and Robin was a convenient scapegoat

What Zoro did there with his sword was called “Knock-knife”. In Japanese history, it comes from when a Sumurai make a promise with other people, they will pull the sword a little, and put it back, the action is simple, but it means I use my life to promise you. Cool little detail.

A small point of interest that may have gone unnoticed due to language nuances. Aokiji isnt his real name. Its a name given to him by the navy when he became Admiral (they all get cool code names, this one means Blue Pheasant). At the point in the flashback he was still just a vice admiral and was known by his real name which is Kuzan.

Finally you get to experience this!!! This scene brought tears to so many people. Countless time. Every single time we are rewatching it. It's one of the best moment in any Shonen. This is one scene where the anime did a very excellent job The voice actor, the animation. I first encounter this moment in the manga. Because I am a manga reader at first before watching the anime. The manga also manage to make me cry during this scene. Oda is that good with storytelling, the build up. In this scene also shows the highest level of emotional intelligence from Luffy. Shooting WG flag is basically a way for Luffy to tell Robin. "We are not afraid to be on the same level of you, being wanted by the WG, the entire world." No hesitation at all. With what we know currently, all of us are trying to hard to not spoil for you 😂 Btw, what Zoro did there with his sword at 35:53 is called Kincho in Japanese culture. It means something like "I promise you with my life".

This a cool bit from Reddit on the last scene where Zoro pulls out his sword a bit, and then puts it back into the sheath. This is actually an old practice called "kincho" which was used by Samurai. The drawing and sheathing of the sword in order to make the metals hit each other signifies a vow that has been made and cannot be broken.
