I am very sorry for posting a spoiler filled explanation of the gear 2. I genuinely didn't remember it got explained in the anime later. I thought it was in sbs. There was no ill intention behind it. But regardless was an oversight on my part. Apologies to everyone.

second gear is soooo fun. and so is third! i saw someone mention the movie and luffy definitely gets some inspo there for gear second but i was also thinking about how the anime hints at him getting this ability...and it came to my mind finally! in water 7 after usopp gets beat up and the boys(tm) go to the franky house luffy goes to do his gum gum gattling move and instead of instantly hitting the guy, he essentially uses that rapid speed to heat himself up and mimic that much more intense hit you experience while he's in that gear! i just thought that was neat i guess :) i'm so gad y'all are still enjoying the voyage <3

I saw you wonder how he came up with gear 2 but there is a minor explanation as in Movie 7 (One Piece: The Giant Mechanical Soldier of Karakuri Castle) during the last fight after taking a big hit he accidentally enabled it for a brief second. For me its implied that after that he figured something out given how combat savvy Luffy is that he later applied vs Blueno in combination with what he saw them doing. Movie 7 aired months before this episode

Idfc, all the subtitle translations from crunchyroll, netflix, hulu botched the reveal for Gear Third, when Luffy says ‘Gear,’ the subtitle says ‘Third.’ Its garage translation, they should actually put thought how on the scene plays out, other than just ‘accurately’ translate for linguistic sake. As for your example of english name, Cowboy Bebop in japanese still addresses Spike Spiegel in character and subtitled as just that and everyone in the anime in japanese calls him Spike, not Spiegel.

yes, in English that would be correct, so for example if your name is “Johnny Smith Dean” in english, in Japanese they would say “Dean Smith Johnny”, but that doesn’t mean that if someone said “Johnny Smith Dean” and were talking in English, that they’re incorrect. it’s much the same thing with second gear, the correct way to say it in English, and what Oda intended it to mean- is Second Gear. it’s just a linguistic difference that in Japanese the descriptor comes first so it sounds like “Gear Second.” does that make sense?
