He's actually really happy and his voice and actions will demonstrate this, but what comes out of his mouth is embarrassed blustering insults.

Everyone is always so shocked by it, because it IS. But for Chopper? Its a deeply meaningful display of trust. :D

Nakama can be used for friend, but also gets translated as colleague, comrade and CREW (mate/member). It's used so often and with such weight behind it, that it basically became THE ONE word to describe One Piece.
