So many things to love about this episode and this season overall. The needle drop to the outro song when Kaya says "I want to become a person like her" is one of the series' narrative peaks. In a very real way Sasha's legacy is redeeming the soul of the girl who killed her. And that small bit at the end where we get a close up on Reiner's stoic glare as Porco complains about having a traitor in their midst. That man just can't out run his guilt.

I figured that was the last thing he remembered when he woke up, or he was having nightmares of what had just happened there

Her character does a lot of heavy lifting in highlighting one of the core themes Hajime Isayama is trying to get with regards to cycles of violence. Especially in regard to how such a cycle can keep its momentum going by ideologies that rely on constant historical recrimination to validate new acts of violence in the present. In fact, I'd say she ranks in the top 5 of best characters in AOT. That being said, everyone knows KING FLOCH is the best character in AOT...π.

Some people don't like it because it's so unlike a lot of what was in the first few seasons, but I think it's great, and it's so rare for anime to go beyond personal emotional stories to comment on big political and humanitarian themes. Especially ones that are so relevant nowadays.

2024-05-01 20:43:32 +0000 UTCI'm so glad you guys pick up on all the small details, recognising Kaya off the bat, understanding Gabi's viewpoint, the flaws in it and the hope for her growth. Also it's great that you see the politcal state of both sides, a war of perception and information. I think Reiner got some newfound purpose at the end there, his only reason for living was just taken from him and now he's driven to get them back.

Good job seeing that was the kid Sasha saved, that was really impressive getting that from the get-go. Do you remember the horse we were warned about because it likes to chew hair? That's the horse that went after Gabi's head π

I would add 15 in as well but I'll leave that up to your discretion on how much you can handle. P.S. Remember Season 3 episodes 16-18. Remember who Floch was then and how he is coming off as now. Remember what he said about Erwin and why he needed to be saved. Something to the affect, of "We need a devil like him to save us".
