I agree with the activation assessment if an Eldian is born with the power of one of the Nine. He/she could have that hidden power for several years until they experience personal trauma or someone steals their favorite toy and then BOOM Titan pops up.

Reiner's retelling of his "horrible" war stories is one of my favourite things in this show. haha :D

Me too! It's so crazy how you realize what you missed watching it again! They have a good eye and thought they would but this just goes to show how good AOT is!

I'm glad you guys sympathize so much with the Warriors, especially Reiner. Really, I thought he was a cool character before but I never really liked-liked him.
Also! Season 4 animation is so good??? Look how they move, damn!!

The animes they could make if they were "inspired" by Japanese atrocities. But I'm assuming it's not even taught correctly in Japan.

Most people shouldn't notice. But knowing that, it's so clear that I'm amazed I didn't see it in my first watch.

I remember there being heated debates on this very subject on forums when “C O F” & “Counterfeit” chapters came out in the manga.

lol, that's pretty much every "war" anime Japan makes. A buddy mentioned it and I had never thought about it that way. They always focus on how bad the Germans were to obfuscate from all the atrocities they commited during WW2.

I developed a love for Reiner while waiting for Season 2. When the big reveal happened I was so betrayed I started to hate him. Following his character is such a rollercoaster ride and that's why I love this show.

It's crazy to me how they've taken to Reiner. I didn't start feeling anything for his character until close to the end of the season. 🤣🤣🤣 I can already picture how Haylo & Kiss will be during this season.

I really appreciate the way you two are able to see both sides and see the good as well as the bad. Many people had trouble empathizing with Reiner and the warrior candidates during this and I love the way you two effortlessly care for them.

It’s impossible not to fall in love with Reiner during this episode. I know I did. And I’m glad you guys found his “horror stories” about the cadets just as funny as I did. “She tried to bribe him with less than half of a potato! How dare she!” 😂 Poor Reiner, that was the best he could come up with.

Brainwashing goes deep, it’s a sad perpetual cycle of ignorance. And the poor kids are caught in the swirling torrent, influenced to do deeds they deem as good to feel patriotic.

As always, loved the reaction and analysis! You both did such a great job comprehending some very layered and complex scenes; it was a pleasure to see you navigate through them by relying on your thorough understanding of the characters, built from your endearing and genuine ability to sympathize/empathize with them. Haylo, I also got a little choked up during the scene in which the Eldians are returning within the gates of Liberio; Kiss, you made a nice point about how it's reminiscent of the Scouts when they'd return home, and I also agree that this episode makes everything, especially characters like Reiner, feel more "personable" and real, I had a nearly identical thought while watching for the first time. While this episode may not be as crazy and epic as "That Day," one could argue it expands the story in a different yet equally important way relative to realism associated with characters.
It was so rewarding for me (and I'm sure you both as well) when you realized what was precisely going on during the dinner scene with Reiner and his family. I know you guys are delaying reading comments to avoid spoilers/influence (which is smart, as I'd want nothing to negatively impact my first viewing of this incredible story). Whenever you get around to reading comments, here are some (spoiler free) thoughts and observations I had regarding that scene that I'd like to share:
I think it’s complex and layered nature is brilliant. First, we transition into the scene with Gabi’s “BOOM,” a direct parallel to the Marley military officer who yelled the same thing to make the Eldian soldiers with PTSD fall down in the previous scene; a clever juxtaposition to show the cycle of hate and discrimination is being passed down. When Reiner starts talking about his time on Paradis, he opens with calling everyone there a ‘savage and heartless devil,’ yet the best example he could think of to try and continue his act is of Sasha offering to share the potato she took. Then he proceeds to describe normal human behaviors we routinely see in people like our family and friends. His family is shocked to hear them described as regular people and not devils. The window shutters timely break open with the sound of lightning and rain as he finishes. Gabi asks, “what do you mean there were all sorts of ‘people’ (not devils) there?” But Reiner’s mother appropriately closes the shutters (as we know from the end of the episode, Marley may be listening in. It also may symbolize any thoughts arising from Reiner's story are dangerous in Marley and are as if you're letting a storm into your house) and reinforces the brainwashed view of them simply being “island devils.”
I think there's two reasons Reiner attempted to talk in a manner like his mother would. The first one you guys recognized right away, to keep up appearances and stay out of danger, as Marley can always be listening in to make sure the Warriors behave/don't rebel. This is also why Reiner initially seems to freak out at Falco on the train, but he was just warning Falco not to think like that publicly; he clearly agrees with Falco's thinking and is essentially acknowledging Falco's big heart and awareness as he urges him to save Gabi from a tragic life due to her ignorance. Again, nice job catching both of those things :).
The second reason which breaks my heart is that he simply wants to be able to talk to someone about his immense guilt he feels regarding his friends. Gabi even offers Reiner an out from talking about his time on Paradis by telling her father that his nephew wouldn’t want to talk about that. He could have taken her up on that, but he doesn’t. He WANTS to talk about it in a genuine nature, yet he knows CAN'T as it would endanger his family. This is why we get his imbalanced story of claiming they were island devils but only giving examples of regular people and behaviors. Reiner cares about the friends he made on Paradis but feels overwhelming guilt for his actions causing them so much pain, to the point where we know it literally caused him to have a split personality in order to try and cope with his guilt. Anyway, I'm so excited for the next episode as it's one of my personal favorites! I'm sure there will be a lot for you both to discuss after haha <3
