He now knows that he will have to kill his old friends because the alternative is either die here or become sacrifices to their replacements, they have to win just as much as humanity behind the walls have to. The only thing we as an audience are missing here is "Why is there this animosity and need to destroy each other?" and "Is it good enough a reason to do everything they've done?". Now the Colossal is in play it's come full circle to the beginning.

From Season 4x1 to 4x16, please watch the opening and ending. 2. 4x17 onwards watch ending only and from 4x23 you can watch the Opening too. This is my suggestion, let others comment if they want other way. 3. The ending Akuma No Ko, from 4x17 should be watched with subtitles while you are in season 4 part 2.
