“Donna…What is this?” Andy whispered to the older woman with grey hair.
It’s been less than a day since he supposedly got the job as a second pianist for the upcoming cultural event, however, now that he was in Donna’s office ready to get introduced to the main pianist, turns out there was a couple instead of the pianist he was hoping to see, it was a black woman and a very tall and pale man.
“Well, we’ve heard that our little Sonya wasn’t going to be the main pianist for the event as Mrs. Schneider promised us, someone told us that you were going to be the second pianist, and that’s something were not going to allow, our daughter may be young but she’s a prodigy, important music schools all over the country and Europe want her, this is an insult not only to her but to me-I mean us, her family!” The father suddenly stepped in with a furious tone, however, his Scandinavian accent was lessening the fear Andy was feeling towards him.
Andy couldn’t believe it, the first time he had to face an angry dad (other than his own) and it happened in a situation like this, it’s true that the man's daughter was going to be the main pianist, but that doesn’t mean her parents are her owners to feel this offended because not even the pianist is here to express her concerns.
“I’m sorry Mr. and Mrs. Eriksson, this is just a miscommunication mistake due to an order coming from the mayor,” Donna lied.
Andy couldn’t believe it, she was throwing him under the bus because she didn’t want to lose that pianist, Andy couldn’t be more disappointed even if he tried to, this was a disaster.
“I’m sorry Andy, but you can’t compete against a seven-year-old piano prodigy,” Donna whispered to him in a low tone.
Andy was so angry right now, and he was thinking of making this family pay for this humiliation, but after seeing the embarrassed and apologetic expression on the man’s wife, he couldn’t bring himself to use his powers to do something against them, Andy has a very controlling father, so, he knows the embarrassment people like her father bring into their child's life.
“That better be the case, we better not hear about something like this again, or else, she will never play in this city in her lifetime, I'll make sure of that…Let’s go, Loretta,” the man hurried his wife, and then, they finally left the office.
As soon as the door was closed with force by the father, there was a silence between Andy and Donna, the young man had lots of things to say to Donna but she wasn’t facing him, she was too embarrassed to say something.
“I know there’s nothing I can say to make things better Andy but please…You need to understand that I can’t afford to lose that pianist, this whole classical musical performance has been carried by that young prodigy, we’ve been advertising her for weeks, and the attention is on her…Can you imagine the disappointment of the townsfolk if she doesn’t end up playing?” Donna asked with a worried tone.
“Why didn’t you tell me you had a piano prodigy as the main pianist? I didn't know that, you could’ve saved me the embarrassment if only you explained the reason why I couldn't join the cultural event!” Andy said with a bitter tone.
“Look…I know I did you wrong but you got to understand that when the mayor gets an idea in her head, it’s hard to stop her,” Donna said before sighing.
“You should’ve told me later, I gave you my number for fuck’s sake!” Andy couldn’t take it anymore.
“I know…But…I was just too embarrassed to tell you, I still had a bit of hope you would be able to participate too, but I needed time, I was going to wait a little longer and prepare things with the parents but somehow they heard about you and well, here we are,” the older woman couldn’t believe it.
It seems like someone leaked that information for some reason, maybe they wanted her downfall or they just wanted to embarrass her, regardless of the reason why that person leaked that information, Donna felt awful for promising something to Andy she wouldn’t be able to give it to him.
“Well, what a disappointment, I should better go tell Anna about this,” the young man said with a bitter tone.
Those words made Donna open her eyes as wide as she could get them, so, she ran as fast as she could to stop him from getting out of her office.
“Please…We shouldn’t let our emotions make us do something crazy,” Donna was clearly worried.
She was truly between the sword and the stone, if she disappointed the parents of that young pianist, she could have humiliated this city and if she disappointed Andy, she was sure she was going to hear a few words from Anna. Donna loved her friend, but as a coworker and her boss, she was a total nightmare.
“No, I’m leaving, there’s nothing left for me here,” Andy said in a bored tone. “Now, please, let me pass,” Andy wasn’t wasting any time.
The woman was worried about what could happen if the mayor heard about this fiasco she was planning to invent something to tell her why Andy wasn't going to participate in the end, however, she needed to work with him, and she knew that the mayor wouldn’t fire her if the event is a success which is something she knows is going to happen but she just needs time.
“Please…Don’t tell her, you saw the situation, it wasn’t my fault Andy…What would you have done?” She asked with an optimistic tone hoping Andy would act logically.
“I would have ditched them, young musical prodigies are indeed an interesting sight to see, but you fail to realize something here dear Donna, she’s an unknown, that’s why she’s performing in the cultural event of an irrelevant city…Those parents were just bluffing,” Andy said trying to not sound so jealous but it seemed like he failed.
“You think you would’ve done it better?” She asked with a raised brow.
“Yes, I’m a hundred percent sure I would’ve done a good job and I’m sure the audience was going to love me, especially the female part of the audience,” Andy said in an arrogant tone.
And this time his assumption wasn’t baseless, regardless of what the men think about him, at least he had the power to make the women fall in love with him and everything he does, including his musical abilities.
“Well…If you’re so sure about that then, why don’t you perform here?” Asked the older woman as she suddenly grabbed a poster.
The young man was a little confused but then his eyes widened after seeing the contents in the poster.
“No way…Why didn’t you tell me that there was going to be an EDM festival?!” Andy asked with a raised brow.
This was so much better than performing piano, he has a bit of experience as a DJ, he has played for free at some high school and college parties in the past, and he prefers being a DJ than playing piano in front of an audience because at least he could perform his productions, and the fact that he has a huge catalog of songs makes this proposal exciting for him even if it has been a long time since he performed as a DJ.
“Well, the promotions were going to start this week because we just confirmed the performers yesterday,” Donna said with a smirk on her face.
“Can you get me a place in the lineup?” Asked Andy with a raised brow, if only he had known this, he wouldn’t have wasted time trying to be the next Mozart.
“Yes…I think we can arrange one set for you in the local artist's section, thirty minutes, is that okay?” Asked the older woman with a raised brow.
“No…I want at least forty-five minutes on the mainstage, I know that very few people visit the local section, or at least it was that way in the festivals I went to in the past,” Andy wanted more.
This was a perfect opportunity to expose his music to a big audience, even if he was a little worried because the biggest crowd he played for was during a frat party where there were around thirty people.
“Andy…You’re asking me too much, the fact that I’m getting you a place in the local lineup is compromising me enough, I know some of the managers of those popular DJs and I don't want to get on their bad side, if you appear in the mainstage people are going to think that you got there because of corruption,” the older woman sighed.
“Come on…I won’t tell Anna about that and I’ll owe you a huge favor if you help me with that, trust me Donna…I’m going to become the greatest artist in the world and when that happens, I’ll pay that favor back or even before if you want to,” Andy said with a confident tone.
Donna on the other hand started to move around the room, his proposal was interesting, and even though he was a little delusional, he wasn’t that bad of a man, so, the older woman suddenly did something that took Andy by surprise, she suddenly cupped his cheeks and kissed him.
