Missa and Lights relationship is like the Jokers and Harleys.

I think L was the perfect blend of emotion and detachment - he didn't sway too much either way. However because of how 'close' he got to not only LIght but to Mr Yagami and the rest of the group, the respect and courtesies he showed them hindered him and ultimately killed him. This second half, with Mellow appearing so radically emotional and passionately driven and Near treating this like an elaborate game where he is the Game Master and everyone underneath are the pieces... It's the extremes in both directions that will have Light on his toes. I don't believe we're supposed to 'like' Mellow or Near as personality wise they are nowhere near L, and that's the point. L was too 'human' and with his emotional attachments to the people on this case didn't do what was necessary to take down someone that has shred himself of his attachments and become a cold-blooded murderer or in his words 'True Justice'. I don't like Near much at all and Mellow is ok but this second season is definitely fun and an intensity we didn't see in the first where Light had the upper hand of an unknown magic on his side. Had L known from the beginning of this book like Near and Mellow, things would have been different and perhaps more like this season. Either way this was a great episode and reaction and I agree, we're seeing Light's priorities shift again - his family and his path to being a God.

I love the last 12 episodes, personally. I think the ending with Near was better because he was more detached and cold toward Light, whereas L had an emotional connection with Light. The last couple episodes are probably my favorite of the series. I also think the last 12 episodes are more interesting than episodes 17-22 and some of the early episodes. Just my opinion, though.

Near's just L if he dumped all his points into intelligence.

the fact that a lot of L's traits are divided between the two of them doesn't help much either. out of the two of them at least mello is a bit more interesting than near

Neither did I, but I've come to appreciate them more since realizing that they're essentially different sides of the same coin.
