As far as the names were concerned, Vikings typically had a given name and a title. The title was given to them later on in life, unless they had something unique about them early on, see Ivar the Boneless.

Ok, quick history time. Shane is partially right, but not for this period. Yes, during its early years Christianity did not denounce other religions and gods as it would in the future, mostly because it was very unorganised. At this time the show is taking place in the year 801. This is nearly 400 years since the First Nicaean council, which solidified Christian belief and founded the catholic church. Not only that this is only a few decades since Charlemagne's triumph against the moors, which ended with him becoming the first Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Charlemagne started an age of extreme devotion to the catholic faith in Europe and it became part of the inherent identity of the European people. This was to the extent that anyone not Christian was called Pagan e.i 'The Worshiper of false gods'. Its why Charlemagne is always quoted and referenced by Ecbert and others, he basically became the father of the new age for Christianity. So no, Athelstan's thinking is not only a couple of centuries ahead of his time, its pretty incredible considering he came from the immediate post Charlemagne generation.

And in Scandinavia at the time and for a very long time if you were a son, you got the lastname of your fathers name + son, so Björn is Björn Ragnarsson (Ragnar's Son) and if you were a daughter it would be Gida Ragnarsdotter (Ragnar's Dotter). A lot of these lastnames still exist. Just like my own lastname, Johansson (Johan's Son).

The Viking language is actually supposed to be Old Norse but I believe they use Icelandic or a variation of Icelandic because it is the closest survivng language to Old Norse that we have. None of the modern Scandinavian languages like Norwegian, Swedish, or Danish are nearly as close to Old Norse as Icelandic.

There are 3 different spoken languages in this show. The normal english which is for simplicity for the viewers and actors. Then vikings language(Not sure if its norwegian, swedish or danish) and the british language(Not actual english but subtitled). Calvin was right about Ragnar saying "Unless we have to" to Aelle in british english.

This is completely false. Lothbrok is a nickname just like Bonelss or Ironside. Lothrbrok actually means "Shaggy-Breeches" in old Norse and was a nickname given to Ragnar. The old Norse did not have surnames like we do now. You either took your father's name and put "son" at the end (so Bjorn would be "Bjorn Ragnarsson") or you were given a nickname like Ironside, Lothbrok, Finehair, Boneless, etc. But the Norse did not have surnames or "last names" like we do. Bjorn would never have been called "Bjorn Lothbrok" because that wouldnt make any sense. Later in the show they actually make the mistake of calling him "Bjorn Lothbrok" and it bothered the hell out of me.

Love you love the show .. xD
