WELL, I guess it's time for me to get back into this show. Oh dear. It's been a while, Vikings. I thought I left you for good, but apparently here I go again, because I don't know any better. I have a lot of nostalgic memories of this, if like, 2013 counts as nostalgic. I watched the first promos, I was with it when the first episode aired... Lots of fond memories from faninteraction back then. So it's gonna be fun reliving some of that. As for this episode, yeah, vikings are raiders (in fact, that's what the word means), and that isn't the most pleasant job. But I'm glad you seem to be enjoying it and taking the show for what it is. It's gonna be a fun journey, rewatching this with you guys.

A lot of people (including myself) do not consider Vikings a "mediocre show". In my opinion in the later seasons it is one of the best shows on television.

Yeah I see this all the time. You cant put our modern first world morals on these people, everyone back then lived pretty harsh lives and every culture in the world did pretty shitty things.

Calvin and Eric pretty much got it. This was a brutal world and Vikings lived harsh brutal lives. Their whole way of life was based around raiding and sacking others. They went out of their way to be particularly violent in order to make people fear them and often times the psychological effect would be a greater weapon than their actual fighting ability. The Mongols and pretty much all other cultures based on raiding did the same thing, it was a very effective strategy. Monasteries were actually the perfect place for Vikings to raid. They often had large amounts of treasure, relics, and other valuable artifacts but were completely undefended. The English never needed to defend their monasteries because no other Christians would attack them but the Vikings obviously didn't give a shit.

Vikings never wore horned helmets, that is a myth. It comes from the drawings done by English monks which depicted them with horns to make them look like demons, this got misinterpreted in pop culture to make people think they had horns on their helmets.

Historical Ragnar is a legend just for the fact that there were literally hundreds of Ragnars back then.

LOL oh dear. You guys are really going to need to get less squeamish if you're going to survive this show. Well, not squeamish, but putting 21st century morality on Vikings of all people. ;) It's less that they're the good guys, and more that they're the less bad guys. This show has a lot of grey (okay, maybe some very dark grey) morality in it.

Ragnar is only semi historical, as there is no contemporary written records for him, Only viking legends. Also family histories cant be accurately traced back that far, as there are no written records of births/deaths/marriages.
