“It’s My Favorite Series!!!” The Point of Genkai Toppa Wrestling! Part 1

Genkai Toppa Wrestling, since its inception in April 2018, has been a big part of my life that I’ve poured so much of my time, energy, willpower and soul into. Everything from the concept, to the writing, to the drawing, and even the lettering were all done by me and me alone. However, Why do I care so much about it? What exactly does this series mean to me? Why the hell would I spend so much of my life into making it? Isn’t it just a comic? Does it make me a lot of money? What’s the deal? That, readers, is what I want to get into. I want to explore what the hell makes this series what it is, and . So, if you’ll indulge me, I help answer these questions.

First off, I need to express that, yes, I do care about Genkai Toppa Wrestling! In fact, I’d say it’s one of my favorite things. Even more than any manga or game or anime or porn pic. When it comes to media, I consider it the piece that most connects with me. I ask myself, though, “That should go without saying. Of course I like it, I’m the one who wrote it!” Well, I don’t like every single thing that I’ve written or drawn. Not only do things like my taste in media change over time, but I simply become a different person over time. It’s difficult to look back on old work I did and realize that it doesn’t connect this new version of me. Ignoring that, there’s things I do that were commissions that were about subject matter that I couldn’t care less about. I have hundreds of drawings and comics that I’ve done that other people paid me to do. There have been comics that, though I made out of passion to see it exist, I made it with a hint of cynicism. Created not only to satisfy my own desires, but knowing that it would very easily get people’s attention, released in a certain way to maximize the amount of clicks and views it would get.

However, Genkai Toppa Wrestling is different. It’s my fucking BABY! It was conceived by the seed of my brain, forcing its way into the womb that was the goddamn paper on my desk. My dick being the G-Pen in my hand. When I make GTW, there’s no cynicism to it. No pandering. No nothing that isn’t the stuff that I personally want to see. A shonen action series with a bunch of cool fights, a likeable,sympathetic main characters, dastardly villains, big emotions, themes of friendship, effort and victory, all peppered with large muscles and gratuitous TnA. In terms of the overall feeling and aesthetic, it’s the perfect action series for me.

While other pieces I’ve done were made to appeal to you, my audience, or specific clients I get, GTW was made for me. Before anyone sees it, it’s got to pass my test first. If I’m going to be drawing ~32 pages per month, it’s gotta be something that I care about. It’s got to hit all of the right buttons for me. It’s has to be my favorite series, you see. Each chapter I write has to considered the best chapter I’ve written yet by me. I’m the true arbiter of what I consider to be good for the series. After all of drafting and redrafting and drawing and contemplating and drawing and even more drawing, it eventually has stories and illustrations that I’d consider good enough for you all to enjoy.

Looking back on older chapters, I can see some problems with prose or structure, the drawings and the pacing, but at the end I can feel proud of myself that exist. I now that I gave that shit my all when making it. Every chapter I do I have to think it’s the best thing I’ve done so far. That it wasn’t a hackneyed piece of regurgitated trash that I could have done any day. It’s got to be my favorite.

I think this post has gone on long enough. I answered the first question well enough I think, so I’m gonna split this series into parts. For this first part, I’m going to make it a public piece. I might do this for the first couple of parts, but we’ll see about the other parts after that.
