Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc

WOW! This was massive fun to watch! I am glad I avoided the theater and waited to watch it with you all on Patreon first 🔥I forgot how intense CSM is when the action starts flowing. I really liked the first 45 mins. Don't get me wrong, I liked the whole movie... I was just SUPER bought into the relationship side of the story. The OST, within the context of the movie, was very nice and added some great elements to the overall experience. That being said, I still prefer the music as a stand-alone experience just because it's so FULL in your ears. The OST as a whole is great. So many variants of 3. Kensuke Ushio has written some outstanding emotions into the score. It was also powerful to hear Jane Doe again immediately following the movie at the credit drop. I already want to watch it again, but... lol no time for it right now. Very excited for CSM S2!

45 Kroners well spent

Nah I don't think she thought that he set her up, reze knew about makima from the start and what she's capable of, but denji 1000% thinks he got stood up

Midass ghost

The author of the ost is the same guy who made silent voice ost.

Budoy

It's like Denji said, she said it was all a lie, but she DID teach him how to swim.

Machine of the 6th River

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned yet, but Reze was on her way back to the Cafe before makima showed up. You can see her pass the phone booth and take the exact path she took to get there in the beginning of the movie. She really did have a change of heart right at the very end. Poor Denji will be thinking she never intended on showing up, and Reze will be thinking that Denji set her up..

Belac

I interpreted the plane scene as a reminder of her mission. Planes drop bombs, so the plane might symbolize the Soviet Union deploying Reze. It works with the water droplet falling like a bomb as well. This is pretty close to what you said to be fair just some more relevance to Reze's particular identity.

Regarding soundtrack, it is really magnificient peace of work; I can suggest you to check out few more soundtracks from Kensuke Ushio called "Devilman No Uta", "Judgement" and "Smells Blood". Not usual soundtracks from what we hear in Chainsaw Man, I'd say more intense and more drive.

I got a collection of facts about things happening in the movie that I like sharing hope you enjoy Symbolism and Visual Cues: 1.The Poisonous Butterfly The Monarch butterfly eaten by a spider is poisonous to its predators. This mirrors Reze, the predator, being poisoned by the love she found in her target, Denji. 2.The Language of Flowers The White Daisy given by Denji symbolizes innocence and fresh beginnings. The Red Daisy held by Reze at the end symbolizes deep romantic love and the courage to return to him. 3.Daphnis and Chloe The painting at the school depicts the Greek myth of two abandoned children learning love through instinct. This reflects Denji and Reze, who were raised as "weapons"/"trash" and had to learn to be human on their own. 4.The City vs Country Mouse When Angel explains this fable, Aki is shaken because his parents were reading that exact story to his little brother right before the Gun Devil killed them, marking the loss of his simple life. Reze’s True Feelings: 1.The Name "Denji" Reze is the only character in the story who never calls him Chainsaw Man. She only ever wants Denji the person, not the heart of the hero. 2.The Notebook A zoomed in shot of her study notebook reveals she scribbled Denji’s name surrounded by hearts, showing a rare moment of private honesty. 3.Laughter vs Lies Reze genuinely laughs at Denji’s antics. When she later claims her feelings were a lie at the beach, it is a desperate attempt to push him away to keep him safe from her world. 4.Bad Acting Reze is shown to be a poor liar in her training flashbacks. Her claim at the end that she never cared for Denji was her most transparent and failed lie. 5.The Menu At the end, the cafe board is erased and replaced with the food options Denji liked most, showing her desire to provide for him. Hidden Narrative and Behavior: 1.The Phone Booth Knife In the booth, Reze held her choker with one hand and a knife in her back pocket. She intended to kill him but stopped because she realized she had fallen in love. 2.Makima’s Surveillance As Reze sings her lullaby, Makima is shown drinking the same coffee Reze gave Denji and nodding to the rhythm, proving she was eavesdropping the entire time. 3.The Jealous Kiss Reze bit Denji’s tongue as a reaction to jealousy and rejection. Lacking emotional tools, she fell back on the only thing she knew: violence and her mission. 4.The Commute Reze was always late to a cafe that was only a two minute walk away. She kept coming back purely because she wanted to spend more time with Denji. 5.The Panties After transforming naked, she is seen wearing white panties during the car chase. This implies she took a human detour to find clothes even in the middle of a mission. 6.Robotic Movement When returning to the cafe, her walk is stiff and soldier like. The moment she sees Denji through the window, she breaks character and begins to run, showing her heart winning over her training. The Pool and The Sea: 1.Vulnerability in Water While Reze can explode in water, it is a significant weakness. Choosing to share an intimate moment in the pool shows she was willing to be vulnerable to be close to Denji. 2.Reze’s Memories In the final sea scene, the flashes of the pool are shown from Reze’s perspective. She leans her head on his shoulder, showing she was content to die by his side. 3.Denji’s Mercy Despite the conflict, Denji dissolves his chainsaws and turns his head away when dragging her into the ocean to ensure he does not accidentally hurt her.

The manga chapter where that scene showed up was literally called Sharknado 😂

superb movie, I definitely recommend a second (or how many you seem fit, prolly worth) watch, especially if your first time was in a theatre… so many intricate things like references, symbolisms and so on in it, like I would have never picked up the airplane comparison 46:50 - plane is really close to Reze, towering over her, nearly crushing her like some sort of pressure -> in other words, a grim reminder to herself and a reveal to the audience, that she wants/has to kill Denji, she is back on her mission now (drop of water also acts like an eye opener/a wake-up call) 1:30:41 - far away, pressure is gone -> she is now free, can express her real feelings, is able to come to closure its only my interpretation ofc, and I might have missed the point completely, but I doubt that the planes are randomly shown :)

unexpected

That was great. The work put into this movie is out of this world

Hermit

That climactic battle sequence with Denji and the Reze is an honest 11/10 It’s super funny that the song being played during that moment is simply just titled “Bomb”. That official song is so short - and yet so impactful... almost like a bomb..? But anyways, I love music like this.

Adam

I just want a what if series where Reze and Denji (and shark boy) have escaped together after the scene at the beach

kinetic98

Hell yeah man, glad you liked it so much!

Lampy

In the lyrics of Jane Doe the last line is “I couldn’t resist dreaming for a bit.” Further supports the idea that Reze got caught up pretending with Denji on what it would be like to be a normal kid falling in love. The pool scene represents that vulnerability and love so well and the music elevates it to the highest level. Masterpiece of a film!

W reaction! Merry christmas!

Happy holidays Tony! Enjoyed the reaction a lot thx.

“I never went to school either” is such an amazing but also sad last line. As you said we want to know more about her backstory but that line and Kishibe telling the story of the Soviet Union children are the only details we get on her past but tbh it’s all we really need. Knowing Reze didn’t go to school makes the scene where she’s pointing out to Denji how fucked up it is that he can’t go to school more tragic as she’s relating to Denji and emphasising with his situation cause she’s in the same boat. I definitely interpret it as she did genuinely like Denji as well and him rejecting her offer to run away caused her to go back to the original plan of taking his heart by force. Also I love how Makima at the end says she also prefers the country mouse. The implication that she was somehow listening to them or knowing what Reze and Denji were doing the entire time is just so spooky and mysterious it’s amazing. Glad you liked this film!

AussieBoy

I think Reze's final line gives tingles because it says everything you needed to know about her character in a simple, clever package that re-contextualizes the entire movie to be all the more interesting. She truly connected with Denji and saw herself in him, and that's why I think she genuinely wanted to rescue him from his situation because she knows far too well that Denji's "good life" as the city mouse is an illusion, and that there is no freedom allowed to them in this world so long as they are the Chainsaw and Bomb hybrids serving their respective owners. A lesser writer would've had her say something much less thought provoking like "the truth is...I liked you too". The first time I watched the pool scene, I was suspicious of Reze and what scheme she had plotting. Now, I really feel it was completely genuine on both their parts, especially with Reze herself being vulnerable (figuratively and literally) in the water as we learned later. Plus as Denji mentions at the end, she says it was all a lie but she genuinely taught him how to swim when she didn't have to do any of these nice things for him at all. She could have murked him in the phone booth if she truly didn't have any interest in him. It's been pointed out that she actually reaches for her knife pocket when Denji is throwing up. I think Denji caught her in his trap the second he handed her the flower -- probably the first gift she's ever received in her life.

Joe

You can definitely interpret it that Reze developed feelings for Denji based on her lines at the end. "I took too long before I fought you." "Why? Why didn't I kill you when we first met?" Looking back on it, there was a lot time spent between them and a lot of things they did together that Reze did not need to do for Denji.

HaruhiDream

One of the best anime movies I've seen from a production standpoint too! Truly is Absolute Cinema

V STAN

During the pool scene there was little scenes of a butterfly being caught in a spiders web and the spider eating it. It's easy to assume it was Denji caught in Reze's web, but by the end of the movie you realize it was actually Reze being caught in Denji's web. Her mission was to kill him, but after realizing his life wasn't actually that good and teaching him things, her fake love started feeling more real. Classic he fell first, but she fell harder. A tragic love story indeed. Hyped for whenever season 2 comes out. The story gets better and crazier from here

Arsenic805

Amazing they managed to adapt that fight, the chainsaw man manga is famous for having fights that are super hard to tell what's going on, fujimoto isn't great at drawing action lol. The next season is going to be amazing, chainsaw man really gets better as it goes on, it goes absolutely wild places

JoeyGuy7

BTW fun tidbit, when reze is strangling that guy on the school roof, the song she sings is in Russian. Didn't notice the first time that it wasn't japanese

JoeyGuy7

Part of the reason why Reze's line on "I never went to school either" hits hard is because the authenticity. Up to that point, there was always room for doubt as she had been lying, but this was her truth. You realize the bond could have formed with Denji. And as we face reality, the tragedy is solidified. Felt like the absence of a chord resolution. Still my favorite movie of the year.

Jet Man

I was very excited for you to watch this movie, I had a feeling you'd really get into all the incredible tracks in this movie. I also really liked the use of really intimate piano recordings throughout. Its a level of close micing id not really heard before and I really liked it

Jeff

On the bit after the pool scene where you talk about temptation etc, I think the reason it hits hard for me is because this is the first time denji has ACTUALLY been in love. He thinks he's in love with makima, but it's just because she's the first person in his life who's ever been nice to him. But reze is actually similar to him (in more ways he knows), and it seems like he has a deeper connection to her than prior love interests

JoeyGuy7

The typhoon devil not only embodies humanity’s fear of typhoons/hurricanes but also temper tantrums. That’s why he appears as a big baby. Chainsaw man does a few clever combination devils like that. The color splash after killing typhoon is a reference to the first cover of the chainsaw man manga. And the only reference to Reze we saw in season one was in the last seconds of the final episode we saw the alleyway with the sounds of footsteps and the ring of the bell from the door opening

Like a MF lawn chair, like a MF origami, like a fresh load of clean laundry. FOLDED

Cody

Omg the intro music video is sooo good. So many little details and jokes I didn't notice the first time. Kobeni dropping her burger and falling to her knees is hilarious lol

JoeyGuy7

1:22:31 A LITERAL SHARKNADO MOMENT 😂😂

FpsRaptor

1:08:00 Yes, this is indeed an extended version of the 3rd ending of CSM Fun Fact : the reason the band had only ever released the 90-second TV cut was… well, because the second verse actually sings about Reze.

FpsRaptor

and yeah visually it's the best thing i've seen in ages

tpoints16

My fave release from the anime industry in a good while and I'm glad you enjoyed it the same way I did. Insanely bittersweet relationship between Reze and Denji and just some of the craziest action I've ever seen. Denji getting punched through a skyscraper ceiling with the house/techno track fading in was some of the coolest shit ever

tpoints16

Absolute 10/10 movie. So glad we got to see your reaction to it. My takeaway from it (spoilers for the movie for anyone thats not yet watched), was that ultimately, Reze did like him. She had multiple chances to kill Denji early on, but she chose not too. The pool scene proved it. She genuinely liked him. But then, when he said that there might be someone else, she snapped, and went back to "My duty to Russia is to kill Denji", which was the original reason she was there. At the end, she could of chosen to go back to Russia, but instead she let the train leave without her, and she sprinted back to the cafe to try and run away with Denji. And she did so because I think she realized on the beach that her emotions were genuine. She nearly kissed him on the beach, but then some part of her held back and to cover it up she punched him in the balls to make it look like she was just playing with him It broke me a little bit watching this both in cinema, and now. Thanks for your reaction Tony :). Have a great Christmas!

MAYBE

"your face looks like my dog that passed away!" Wow, amazing pick up line, totally would fall for that

H. H

“i never been to school either” hits hard because even when Reze was 100% going to kill Denji; she couldn’t help but bond with him because they both pretty much grew up with no say in their future + much trauma. In the end, the flower makes Reze realize Denji was someone she could genuinely love but tragically meets her end

jonaru

Let's goo

H. H

Man what a movie, it really did just hit different. I think the feelings betwen Reze and Denji were completely mutual by the end, which just makes its much sadder. I've never really felt the need to rewatch movies, but watching your reaction will be my 3rd time. You really should watch silent voice too if you want to do more movies eventually, its pure art 👌

Bautista

Glad you enjoyed, have a nice holiday

Danyul

Kensuke Ushio is one of my favorites. You NEED to watch a silent voice
