Dan Da Dan Ep 7

On the opening, as a manga reader aliens and spirits are a huge focus in the entire story. 170+ chapters in. Also creepy nuts lyrics in the song are all phrases and references from horror movies and folk lore about spirits and aliens because they made the song with this anime in mind. 100% intentionally connected.

Depends on where and how you grew up but owing money to loan sharks/bad people and the struggle of a single parent to raise a child in poverty (and having to resort to selling yourself) is not an uncommon story and one that resonates with a lot of people.

Trowa

I've had this happen with multiple anime, I wonder if it is interpolation due to the anime possibly being 24 FPS while most monitors range from 60-165 FPS

AsbestosDust

Yeah, I dont want to be that guys that says "Oh yeah those guys were so much better back in the day blahblah.." but their recent songs haven't been... their songs.

Tony, you have now experienced a staple moment in any anime watchers career. People made the same jokes with the season 1 of JJK but when you’re stuck on some sad shit that happens in the episode and then that fun ass, happy ass ending music comes on. That initial moment of discomfort and confusion is one that you will remember. Welcome!

BlakStatik23

yeah they definitely show it more in the manga

no, you’re totally right about the opening not making sense or having much relation to the first seven episodes. but trust me there is so many more aliens, the author just really expands on every arc if that kind of makes sense, which is why we havent seen aliens in seven episodes. but it’s pretty 50-50 when you get to volume 9.

This ep reminded me of Vinland saga season 2 ep 17. The one with the Gardar's flashbacks with his son. Started out with cool fighting scenes and ended up with sad and depressing story.

Mirrorline

Yep I did bawl during first time watching it didn’t even realize I started crying and another time when I rewatched it with my friend.

Detective Gamez

What i really liked is that the mother bought ballerina shoes that were too big for the lil girl. That way she could grow into them as she gets older, saving money.

Haiiro

I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt disoriented at the spinning scene, it felt very choppy and my eyes felt like they couldn't adjust. I switched to watching on a TV and it was much smoother, choppiness gone. Something about the refresh rate of the monitor was messing with the playback. I would recommend watching on something other than a monitor if you experience similar discomfort. I absolutely loved everything about this episode. It was a refreshing departure from the craziness we are accustomed to expect from this title. I do find it rather sad though that she most likely does not remember who her actual daughter is.

Fantastic storytelling in that entire flashback. From setting the atmosphere in the beginning with the rain, the details of the dresser and the money in the love hotel, the red dress in the window, to the money used to make the purchase. It wont be apparent to every viewer, but enough information is given to us outside of dialogue that we can make connections and figure out why the daughter was taken. It conveyed what it needed to convey. A beautiful piece of art to help take us to a kinder world.

aira, the pink haired girl, is NOT acro-silky's actual daughter. the real daughter was kidnapped by men that the mother owed money to, and it's assumed that she's dead. as a toddler, aira was able to see acro-silky, because it's commonly believed that children and animals are more susceptible to spirituality and the paranormal, which explains why she was unable to see acro-silky anymore as she grew. acro-silky's memories of her human life became blurred and hazy following her death, though she remembered that she had a child. when toddler aira mistook acro-silky for her mother, acro-silky mistakenly believed that she was actually aira's deceased mother. the ending, where aira hugs acro-silky and calls her "mommy" was because she saw the same sequence that we saw, and was attempting to comfort/thank acro-silky before she disappeared.

All the unclear stuff has pretty much been explained by other people already but yeah Aira wasn't her actual daughter, she was able to see her spirit as a child and mistook it for her own recently deceased mother and so Silky went on believing Aira was her lost daughter. In the manga it makes it more clear that the dancing sequence ends with her dancing off the roof of a building and dying while the daughter who was kidnapped by debt collectors not her father, also died at some point soon after. There is a panel in the manga not included in the anime of the mother and daughter passing on to the afterlife together after Aira helps her to let go of her regrets and rest in peace. Overall the whole backstory is visually actually way more visceral in the manga believe it or not, but it was still done incredibly in the anime.

peeps

Right??? All these new creepy nuts fans need to hear something from before bling bang bang

JoeyGuy7

To add since they didn't make it super clear the Dancing she was doing was on a Roof top of a building. At the end of the dance she does a flip off the building to kill herself. It's also pretty common in Shows/Anime that children are able to see paranormal things that adults can't. Which is why the daughter can see the ghost and accidently calls her mom.

Jc

And that's why I can never pin down how to describe this show to people. "Yeah so it's like guy loses his nuts... sexy grandma.... depression ghost stories. Yknow what just check it out, it's peak"

LewdProxy

The pink girl is not the daughter. Pink girl is just comforting her at the end of her life.

neZiiak

Nah Call of the nights Op is still the best one they have done imo

Jc

Yea owing money to the yakuza is a pretty common plot point in anime. They're not as widespread as they used to be but still an easy cultural shorthand for a Japanese audience, harder to spot for American viewers

JoeyGuy7

The way i understood the episode is that pink-haired girl is NOT the real daughter and she just lied at the end to give the ghost a restful death. So basically a loving lie. But ive only seen the anime so maybe there is more to it.

FruitsPunchSamurai

The cut to the end credits is too much lmao

JoeyGuy7

this right here is why we love anime

Jonas Teigen

They pulled off a sad flashback with such minimal dialogue, too. Like 4 lines total.

A37

I knew it was coming but I wasn’t ready and many others felt the same. Still tear up. Such a beautiful episode though. A professional ballerina reacts to anime on YT and she really praised that dancing scene. They went all out and had to have gotten a pro dancer to help them get that scene right.

Sarai

to clear stuff up, Aira’s not her daughter, and the kidnappers aren’t the child’s father. The kidnappers were loansharks (or something similar) because the mother got involved in really shady business to try to make money to support her daughter, hence the first scene being her waking up in a love hotel with an envelope full of money, and a few other scenes. (it’s fine not to catch it, it was really vague.) The reason why Aira called Silky her mother is because she along with Momo witnessed all her memories, and so she wants her to rest in peace. It was made clear in the manga but not in the anime, but the mother, along with her daughter, both died. one to suicide, the other to murder. (sorry for long message this episode was really good and really sad so i just did some digging lol and its spoiler free)

TuskedTusk

Aira was not the womans daughter. When she died, she lost her memories, but had a feeling she lost something. Aira as a kid calling her mom triggered her parental instincts, making her think she was Aira's mom. The story is supposed to be about a mom who lost her daughter and being a surrogate mom to Aira, and Aira who lost her mom finding a surrogate mother in the spirit

Alejandro Pupo

I've been waiting for this! This episode is so good, me and many others are saying that it's a legitimate contender for anime episode of the year

V STAN

I was waiting for your reaction 🙏
