Leather Devil sketching process (10x time-lapse)

• Turn on the CC subtitle to get more text commentary.
• This is only the sketching process.
• I made this video unlisted on YT, so don't share it publicly.
• Software/device/BGM details are in youtube video description.

After the sketch was done yesterday, I decided to try several different approaches for the rest refinement. I'm currently testing different technic/style of shading, filling shadows and doing flat colors. Since the rest is mostly for 'testing', I need to constantly switch between different software/working monitors, finding new references, so it's unlikely that I can also do recording at the same time.

Anyway, here's the sketching video I've recorded so far. It's actually a combination of 6 clips because sometimes I need to stop for a break, or just doing nothing but staring at it and seeing if something is off. So in total it seems I took about 200+ mins for one sketch, but the truth is that it took me 5-6 hrs. (not including the time for finding references)

If I force myself to do a sketch in about 1-2 hrs, mostly the result will be boring, generic and easily forgettable. It's always a struggle between making something meets my desire, or being productive :/

Aw thank you too for the like! <3

This is insanely helpful and inspirational! Thank you so much for uploading this Rae<3

I still use reference, but I don't look at them very often while focusing on drawing. I only use them for correction. If I found drawing without reference is hard, it's a sign of lacking anatomy practice/knowledge, or just, confidence in drawing. For studying anatomy and drawing practice, I think Proko's youtube videos provide the best quality tutorials. Also, there's a book called 'Anatomy for sculptors' by Uldis Azrins and Sandis Kondrats. It's very good for understanding anatomy :) Somehow I found doodling without any reference is very important as well. It makes me feel more ease and care less about the accuracy, overall, more 'fun' to draw. Never let the frustration and perfection block you for too long.

Thanks for sharing your process! I've always admired how you draw bodies. If I'm not mistaken, I noticed you don't use references much. May I ask for your advice on how you improved with drawing bodies and clothing? I enjoy figure drawing but find myself heavily relying on references for accuracy almost all the time.

It's not much I but I'll just add subs anyway haha, I hope it helps! 😅

thank you for subs!
