Housekeeping question for the community

Patreon recently made it possible to offer full year subscriptions.

What do you all think about it?  Should I spend the time looking into it?  Is this something any of you would want?

I'm honestly curious about this, because I want to make sure you guys get what you all want, but I assumed this would be a non-starter this year because of 2020 being 2020.

Thoughts?

Thanks for all the responses so far. My takeaway so far is that I should look into it, but not drop everything to do so.

Yeah there'd be a discount

Blaise Corvin

I can offer discounts

If I was a brand new patron I probably would have done the lump sum, but I'm used to the monthly charge now so I likely won't switch. So I think it might be appealing to new patrons.

Makes no difference to me, unless the year is cheaper in which case I’d probably switch to it. But not a big deal either way.

yes, i like the option of paying a lump sum and knowing when its coming up instead of having smaller amounts spread out, it doesnt hurt to have both so i think its worth doing

I’d need more information. Part of the value of Patreon is the ability to walk away if my finances took a hit (I had to prune it during covid quarantine for example)... but there are authors I would want to maintain regardless - so I have some interest. So if you want to spend the time to figure it out, I’m a maybe? Not sure that’s reason enough to split your time...

What is the benefit of the year subscription? Is it just the lump sum for a year of a specific tier? I would probably do it

Jimmy

If you wish to do due diligence, SubscribeStar, Sponsus.org, WattPad, StoriesOnline, and Smashwords may be of interest. I've used each at least once, and while IMO none are as 'big' as Patreon, they all seem to have some beneficial quirks as well as downsides.

I appreciate the concern. I've opened a buymeacoffee.com account. It's not as easy to post to etc as Patreon, but I want to keep that open as an option to jump to if Patreon sinks, or for readers to use if they have fallen out of love with Patreon

Look into the lawsuit Patreon is currently under to make sure they aren't planning on running with your money. Also look into other avenues of income for yourself for protection.

I definitely would be interested

Go for it, I’m doing it for several others
