Chapter 404 - A Real Dragon
Added 2024-12-15 22:00:46 +0000 UTCApologies for the delay. I've made a good start on the next chapter already so predict 405 will be out on Tuesday as planned. Hope you like the chapter.
The day hadnât exactly gone as planned, but Hump was pleased. This was better than retreading his old streets. It was actually useful, and he might have actually found a kid with some talent to be a practitioner.
Mav was doing a good job of hiding his awe as they walked back to the Rike estate, but Hump saw him taking everything inâthe lavish estates hidden away down winding streets, the eccentric gates partially concealing large gardens within, and the nobles and carriages that passed by. It was a different world to the fishery not twenty minutes away. Less crowded, better smelling, and filled with extravagance. Hump had bought Mav some food from one of the many food stands theyâd passed along the way, and he seemed happy enough, but the kid was good at hiding what he was thinking. Still, Hump could imagine.
The whole situation made Hump think back to when his master had first taken him on as a disciple. It was long ago, but he still remembered his own apprehension. That feeling that things were too good to be true, waiting for the other shoe to drop. Strangers had been unpredictable at best, and dangerous at worst. Even when his master had given him everything he had neededâtrained him in magicâHump had waited months for the catch. It took time to trust someone when life had taught you otherwise.
âIâm guessing you havenât been around here much,â Hump said.
âNever,â Mav said. âMy sister told me not too. Too dangerous.â
âDangerous?â Bud said with a frown. âI would think itâs the opposite. There are so many guards around here.â
Hump gave his friend a lookâsometimes the knight could be as thick as his armour. âGuards are the problem, my friend. See any beggars around here?â
Bud suddenly looked around and realisation dawned on him.
âDonât let folk like me in these parts,â Mav said. âGet caught stealing round where I live and youâre in for a beating. Get caught here and they might hang you.â
âSurely they donât hang children in Elenvine,â Celaine said, shocked.
âThey donât,â Bud said quickly. âThough I now of thieves that have been executed or had a hand chopped off.â
âI knew a girl whose brother was hanged,â Mav said. âHeâd snuck into one of them fancy carriages and nicked his booze.â
Celaineâs lips pressed into a thin line, and she shook her head, disgusted. âYour people can be truly barbaric.â
âI assure you, Mav, hanging children isnât legal,â Bud said.
Mav narrowed his eyes. âYou calling me a liar?â
âNo, butââ
âThen you think Iâm stupid?â Mav interrupted.
Bud turned to Hump desperately. âHelp.â
âYou ever seen one of these hangings?â Hump asked Mav.
âNo,â Mav said. âDoesnât mean it isnât true.â
âNo, it doesnât,â Hump said. âAnd it wouldnât surprise me if there are some nobles that hold private executions, but such things really are illegal.â He glanced at Celaine. âWeâre not that bad.â
Mav looked at Celaine curiously. âWhere are you from?â
Celaineâs expression softened. âA place far from Elenvine, to the north of Alveron, and in the Fallen Lands.â
Mavâs eyes widened. âWhatâs it like there?â
âItâs far smaller for a start,â Celaine said, her voice quieter now, as though she were remembering the place. âThere are no cities like thisâjust open land surrounded by forests. Beautiful forests. Thereâs enough space for everyone, and more than enough food to go around.â
âSounds nice,â Mav said, a wistfulness in his voice.
Hump couldnât help but snort. âThere are also monsters, undead, and dungeons. Itâs not all nice.â
Mav frowned and glanced between them. âSounds better than here. Whatâs it called?â
âDrakalyn,â Celaine said, a faint smile touching her lips. âIt means âDragon Landâ in your tongue.â
Mavâs skepticism returned. âHave you really seen a dragon? Amy says theyâre not real.â
Celaine raised an eyebrow, her smirk turning playful. âIâll leave that for you to decide.â
âYou people are weird,â Mav muttered, furrowing his brow. âJust cause Iâm a kid doesnât mean I donât know things. Iâm street smart.â
Hmp chuckled under his breath, shaking his head. âYouâll see for yourself soon enough.â
They arrived at the Rike estate soon, the guards allowing them through.
âYou really live here?â Mav asked, gawking at the lush garden filling the space beyond the gates and leading up to the main house. âItâs giant.â
âI donât live here, but my fiancĂ©e does,â Bud said. âThey train disciples here to become martials.â
âSword wizards?â Mav asked.
Hump shrugged. âClose enough.â
They passed by the main house and headed for the guest building where they had been staying, where Hump had asked Nisha to wait outside for them, Emilia sitting on the deck with her, giving them a curious smile as she noticed Mav with them.
As she turned toward them, Mav froze mid-step.
Hump grinned, following the boyâs line of site. Nisha stared straight at him, tail whipping back and forth. Her purple eyes were unblinking, her wings tucked to her sides as if ready to spring forward.
Hump grinned as he felt Nishaâs excitement thrumming through their bond. Be nice, Nisha. Donât break him.
And with that she was unleashed. A delighted chirp escaped her as she flapped her wings and launched herself forward.

Mav stared at the creature barrelling toward him, his heart pounding like a drum in his chest. For a split second, he thought heâd been kidnapped to feed to a dragon. The beast was all shimmering scales and gleaming teeth, its purple eyes locked on him like a cat that had found a mouse. Only this cat was as tall as him.
The creature unfurled its wings, and Mav thought that was it. He raised his arm in same attempt to protect himself, bracing for impact. But the impact didnât come. The dragon skidded to a halt just inches in front of him, her momentum carrying her in a half-circle around him. Mav staggered back, arms flailing as her scaly body brushed against him, her head butting into his side with enough force to make him stumble.
âAhâhey!â Mav yelped, stumbling as he tried to stay on his feet.
He stood rigid as a board, arms raised high as though heâd surrender to the thing. His breath came in quick, sharp bursts, terror clawing up his throat.
The dragon didnât seem to notice his fear. She circled him like an overeager puppy, her tail whipping back and forth across the ground and leaving faint marks in the dirt. Her sharp claws clinked against the stones as she finally settled herself in front of him, sitting back on her haunches. She looked up at him with wide, violet eyes, her forked tongue lolling lazily from the corner of her mouth as though she was starving.
Mav just stared. Iâm not dead.
âDonât worry,â Hump said, stepping forward to stand beside the dragon. He placed a steady hand on her neck, calm as if this whole thing was normal. âShe wonât bite.â
Mav turned sharply, gaping at him. âSheâs a dragon!â
Hump shrugged. âI told you that already.â
Mavâs voice pitched higher, panic taking hold. âYou told me about a dragon! You didnât say there was a real dragon! Thereâs a dragon!â
Celaine snorted with laughter, the sound light and amused. She stepped in gracefully, brushing past Mav as though none of this were unusual at all. Her hand ran down the dragonâs back, stroking the smooth scales that shimmered faintly in the light. The dragon practically melted under her touch, leaning into Celaineâs hand and making a low, rumbling sound that Mav could only describe as a purr.
âHer name is Nisha,â Celaine said. âAnd sheâs a wolf dragon, and only a baby at that.â
Mav stood there staring between them all, lost for words. Amy always said it took a lot to shut him up, but these people were crazy.

Emilia came through for Mav just as Hump expected she would. Arrangements were quickly made for the kid to stay at the dorms for the Rike familyâs disciples. It was a good place for himâsafe, clean, and filled with other people his age with strong potential. Though when Hump had seen him off, Mav hadnât looked particularly keen.
âYou swear youâll get Amy back?â Mav had asked at the door.
âI will do all I can to bring back the children the warlocks took,â Hump said. âBut I cannot swear to bring her back. The people that took her are powerfulâfar more powerful than me. What I can promise is that I will try my best.â
âWe all will,â Celaine said.
Mav had looked over them, seeming to consider it, then nodded. âThanks.â
They had left him to it shortly after that. The rest of the day passed uneventfully. After the chaos of the fishery, the quiet was a welcome reprieve. Dylan returned late that afternoon, and soon after a few letters arrived for them. New orders from commandâthey were to enter the Remnant Realm sooner than expected for a preliminary expedition. Aldric had finally got in touch too and had a member of his staff step in to grant Hump and his companions access to the Vault of the Inquisition for their other rewards.
It was a nice evening. They shared a meal at Emiliaâs estate, recounting events to which Emilia, Dylan, and Bud all protested about their lack of involvement. And then it was time to break the news of Humpâs decision not to stay at the Rikes.
âYou really donât need to find another place to stay,â Emilia said. âMy family are warriors, and I think they are more than a little proud to host the White Flame.â
âThey will come for me, Emilia,â Hump said. âItâs only a matter of time. Celaineâs already explained to me how easy it would be for someone to track me down. You have children in training here, your mother is injured, and your family has lost enough already. I donât want to put you in danger.â
âNot only that, but it may put Hump at risk staying here,â Celaine said. âAs you said, your family are warriors. Itâs unlikely an assassin or thief would target Hump here, but why bother when they can simply watch the gate and wait for an opportunity when heâs in the rest of the city.â
Bud let out a long sigh, resting a heavy gaze on Hump. âWhat will you do then?â
âMove between locations,â Hump said. âI was thinking of speaking to Skander. If thereâs anyone we know that can advise, it would be him.â
âWhat about Marcela?â Dylan asked.
âToo obvious,â Celaine said. âSame issue as staying here. They will find him.â
âAnd you really think a member of Randallâs party is a better option?â Bud asked, unconvinced.
âI thought you were coming to like him,â Hump said.
âHe is a brother of Kelisia, and I can see he is making an effort, but it is difficult to trust him after what his father did. I would never have suspected his father to be in league with the warlocks either.â
Emilia nodded. âThe less people that know, the better. At least for now, I think moving around will be enough. Youâre going to be a regular at the academy, the Kingâs Hold, and here. Itâs not like a safehouse would work unless you hid away inside anyway.â
âThatâs a fair point,â Hump admitted. âMoving between inns seems preferable to that.â
âGood.â Emilia nodded. âThen moving on to the next matter if youâre going to do this, one of us should be with you at all times. We can do shifts and take it in turns.â
Hump shook his head. âThatâs really not necessary.â
âYouâre being targeted by assassins,â Celaine said. âEither you willingly let us help, or we stalk you.â
âAgreed,â Bud said.
Dylan clasped Humpâs shoulder. âBest of luck trying to escape four Chosen, my wizard friend. We all know how rubbish your illusion magic is.â
Hump sighed. âWell, itâs appreciated.â
âIndeed it is,â Dylan said, laughing. âI suppose the last thing to consider is little Nisha.â
Nisha looked up from Humpâs lap, tilting her head. She looked sulky. Even if she didnât know what was going on, she could tell something was wrong.
âShe should just stay here,â Emilia said. âYou can visit, Hump, the disciples love her, and one of us will always be around to keep an eye on her.â
Hump ran a hand over Nishaâs head. âI suppose trying to keep out of sight would be quite difficult with Nisha with me, wouldnât it.â
âItâs only for a week,â Celaine said. âAfter that weâll be in the Remnant Realm. Itâll be better for her here where she has space to run around anyway.â
Hump gave his agreement. âI guess all thatâs left is for me to find an inn for tomorrow night. Who wants first shift?â
âIâll do it,â Bud said immediately. âItâll be nice for the two of us to have a night together.â
Hump frowned at the knight. âDid you have to put it like that?â
âI just meanâŠâ Bud groaned. âI just mean we could do we some bonding time.â Humpâs face fell further. âSome catching up. A few rounds of drinks.â Bud sighed. âYou knew exactly what I meant.â
Laughter filled the room. For tonight, theyâd take it easy. Tomorrow, a new fortune awaited them. Fifteen-hundred gold coins, an artifact from the Royal Armoury, and three from the Vault of the Inquisition.
Hump could hardly wait.

âBest of luck trying to escape four Chosen, my wizard friend. We all know how rubbish your illusion magic is.â. Shouldn't it be 3 chosen and 1 martial. Celaine, Bud and Dylaan are chosen Emilia is a martial.

2024-12-16 00:04:06 +0000 UTCThanks for the chapter. Loved the tone of it, the camraderie. Couple typos. "Hump think back to when his faster" Master? "He placed a steady hadn on her neck" Hand? I'm sure there's a 3rd, but I going back through I can't find it again, I seem to be looking past it. 2 out of 3 ain't...well, it's kind of bad, but not entirely bad I suppose. Better than nothing!
