2024-03-16 12:20:36 +0000 UTCAskeladd laughs at the end and then tells Thorfinn to wait to see the results of his bargain. You can't forget that Askeladd is a strategist first and foremost: He just took a shot. He risked, planning to kill Ragnar and see if that would fuel Canute and it worked out. He lost most of his men who believed he was failing and then betrayed him, then all of them ended up dead by Thorkell's group...but his plan worked! Canute is on full King Mode. And he laughed because his plans went even better than he thought, he actually couldn't believe how well it worked, now they had Thorkell as an ally too. Askeladd may have no army anymore but he does not need to be worried about fighting Thorkell, his main fight right now is besides Canute, being an advisor and strategist and helping him gain the throne. And if they ever need to go to combat, he has Thorkell manpower on the side. And all that talk between Canute and the Priest.... my take is: Canute, basically just lost his fear, fear of life and fear of those lost men, they might be big and physically strong but they don't know anything else besides fighting...so...why be scared? There's not that much to lose, why be soft? might as well go all in.

2024-03-16 11:09:38 +0000 UTCThe events of the episode are somewhat open to interpretation. This episode doubles down on some of the philosophical/theological themes the show has been slowly introducing. Essentially, Canute has given up on his faith in Christianity (by committing the worst sin: pride). He is frustrated and angry with God because based on his new understanding, humanity is doomed to never understand love and will never be able to "enter paradise." He is now resolved to "build paradise" in the world they currently live in. So essentially the "passive/submissive" Canute we've seen so far has transformed into an "active/assertive" Canute due to his new ideology. Why did Bjorn not attack Canute? My interpretation is that Canute's transformation was so extreme that he now comes across as powerful/intimidating, even to Bjorn raging on mushrooms. The show implies indirectly that special people and leaders (like Thors and Askeladd) have an intangible aura about them (that sometimes other special people can sense). For example, when Askeladd asked Thors how he knew that Askeladd was the leader, Thors said that he could, "smell it."
