Where Has The Wonder Gone?

Well here we are then – you, me, this fine bottle of whiskey and an empty space. We could talk, as men do, of battles fought and lost, of the furious, the fallen and fallacious, but we are not morbid yet. We could consider the agricultural economics of the Middle Ages but we are not yet that drunk, old or desperate.  Yet.

Instead let us consider what we might want to achieve together, and perhaps pursue a noble goal. In all educational establishments everywhere, it is a sad truth that interest in our histories has waned as the ideas around what history means has hardened into weapons wielded by the unworthy.

What can we do, you and I, to change that, to reignite the spark of joy and fear and wonder and hope that lies within? Every child who hears a good, ideally very bloody, story has a wonder that is slowly stamped out by traditional education and then eradicated when they realise they cannot earn a living doing “just History” and yet without our history we cannot define ourselves, for good or ill, and cannot know how we can grow beyond it. How can we find that passion once more?

Well perhaps we can start by simply telling one another stories; of daring-do, of disasters, of hope, of how we have come this far, of the mistakes and triumphs of the past, and maybe, along the way learn about ourselves and what we must do next in our time?

Or if not we can at least get utterly shitfaced together….help me fund these things with your support and at the very least my sound quality will improve, and you can have some sway over what roads we tread, and ensure my liver gets the pounding it so richly deserves

You sir, have a way with words. I'm quite happy to go for the ride along any one of your tangents, and am definitely in support of a drink along if this happens to ever be a thing !

An interesting point of spelling/grammer: I always thought the old phrase was spelled "derring-do"; although "daring-do" certainly makes a hell of a lot more sense in modern English, and I note from a 30-second google search that it's considered a valid spelling. TIL. I look forward, m'lord, to the next part in your fascinating-yet-horrifying "How To Murder Thousands Of Innocent People While Losing An Astonishing Amount Of Aircrew and Equipment" series.
