Scream 5 - Movie Reaction

........ if you think i'm ever getting over it ........ i'm not.

Scream 5 - Movie Reaction

Comments

They do say that they were going to move Tara to a private floor after Sam gets attacked in the cafeteria/break room so thats why it was so quiet on that floor!

Chris Ryan

I actually stopped at Dewey's death for a while cause I lost interest. Watched till the end now it was okay. When you realize that Dewey was killed by tiny Amber and that the only possible story telling mechanism for Dewey's death was to motivate Gale and Sydney it is even more irritating.

JSmoak

Dewey's death was so unsatisfying... the look at your phone moment before shooting the killer in the head. Poor writing that whole scene and where was everyone in the hospital? Jenna Ortega (Tara) gets her own hospital floor apparently lol the whole thing was odd and then they tried to make Dewey's death too gruesome. Dude was my literal favorite character in the series. Such bad writing!

JSmoak

Long time fan and 200% agreed with your reaction and outro thoughts. I’m sorry, but give me scream 3 over this one any day. No character development, overdone themes, and they really lost me the second we lost Deputy Dewey Boy … I did love some of the call backs, but not enough to make up for the overall performance of this one. Sending you all the love, cause this one was hard for a lot of us too. 💕💕

Jessica Leigh

personally this is my favourite in the entire franchise SORRY CAITLIN. it’s a shame you weren’t able to connect to these new characters because i think they’ve done a really good job with the last two movies.

sienna dalena

Super late to this, but Dewey's death makes sense to me. He survived a lot in the franchise due to dumb luck, and realistically, he was too old and in poor shape to survive again. I get that they had to kill him to bring Sidney back and give Gale a reason to go after the killers, but he should have died protecting Sam and/or Tara :/

Jade

omg i would love for her to react to the whole series lol or atleast iconic episodes

Torre Johnson

Watching Caitlin cry made me cry too like I know they had to do it cause why else would Sidney come back? She would have to since she’s much closer to him than gale especially with Tatum being her best friend

cloudy.apples

Bit late to the party, but yeah Deweys deaths sucked and made no sense. He could've: A: Shot ghostface in the head while he was still on the ground BEFORE taking the rest out. B: Get out along with the rest of them. C: Not get so close for the head shot, could've easily shot him from like 10m away at least And D: Shoot and then reach for your phone to see who's calling you.... I don't think I've ever seen worst carried out death in all horror movies...

ArchetypePreston

Omg I've been waiting for this reaction!! I've never not cried over Dewey!! 😭

Bridgett Brewer

I hate how Dewey got treated ugh

La Toya Sheri

Dewey had to be the legacy character that died. Gale and Dewey have their own relationship, Sidney and Dewey have theirs. Gale and Sidney don't. He had to die to bring Sidney and Gale together. I hate his death as much as the next guy, but I understand it at the same time. And a fun fact that I've noticed and heard in watching these movies, you can almost always tell who the killer is by who is wearing plaid over shirts. Love your reactions to these BTW. Watching these with you is like watching them again for the first time.

Jarod 413

Love your reactions! I have been a fan of the “Scream” franchise since the first one came out when I was a teenager and its what cemented my love of horror films. I have seen every sequel in theatres as they’ve been released over the decades(!) and I probably will keep watching them as long as they keep making them. Some of the films I quite enjoyed while others, not so much. We all have our favorites. I genuinely thought they had killed Dewey in Scream 2 (after he was originally supposed to die in the first film), so I was kind of expecting one of the OG 3 to die in Scream 5 before seeing it and was 99% sure it would be Dewey. So when it actually happened, I was mad but I had already accepted it and it made sense. It sucks - no way around it. I will tell you that Screan 6 (yes, it has flaws) was much more enjoyable despite the absence of Dewey and Sidney.

Carrie May

To be fair (in my opinion) 6 is MUCH more entertaining than 5. Hopefully you at least have a good time with it even though we’ve lost Dewdrop ❤️

Char

She is absolutely beautiful

dontrell Durant

I didn't like this movie from the very opening. Having someone get stabbed that many times and surviving!!? Then having all her friend live as well!!!! Trash movie.

dontrell Durant

Oh my god that squeak at 38:34 got my dog so damn good

Jacob S.

In the original script Tara and Amber are suppose to be dating I believe

Cat Rizzo

Scream 5 is good but it's not without it's many many flaws. I am super upset about Dewey dying but at the same time it makes sense to kill off one of the original characters in this film because it would just make it look like everyone is invincible so I for sure see where you're coming from. You will love Scream VI a lot more than this film probably. Sam Carpenter is a top 3 final girl from me. She has a much darker background than most final girls and she's an absolute fighter which I love. I fully believe you're gonna connect with her so so much in the next film. I see where you're coming from though Caitlin. Can't wait to see your Scream VI reaction though. Also not sure if you're confused about it but the new Sidney is Sam, not Tara actually. Tara is just a supporting character to Sam. Sam is the main target of Ghostface in this movie and of Scream VI

Tionne

So I live in the town where they shot the first Scream, I’ve lived here all my life. I also worked at the video store from the first movie. I’m really excited to see your reactions to this series. I’m about to marathon them all. Sadly Scream 4 doesn’t have a 4K release and probably never will with how weird the rights for that movie are.

djKENTO

damn bro

Hassan

Personally I think it's quite poetic that he died protecting Sam's sister since he wasn't able to protect his own in the first one.

Heida

The directors said they both loved and hated killing off Dewey but they felt it was essential to show that no one is safe. It was also the only way to explain Sidney's return to Woodsboro. I hate it too so I feel you. But from a film-making standpoint it was brilliant because once you realise Dewey and Gale were divorced you think they are both safe because they need to get back together by the end of the movie. And, personally, I feel he had both an honourable and "cool" death. It was kind of poetic for him to die saving Sam's little sister since he couldn't save his own in the first movie. (Fans have often criticised Dewey's apparent lack of grief for his sister since the character was hardly mentioned in the sequels. However, this one finally pays tribute to Tatum by showing a box of her ashes displayed in Dewey's trailer). The scene between Dewey and Gale led to "a lot of tears" as the two actors had been married and divorced in real life. Dylan Minnette's reaction to seeing GF was genuine as the filmmakers sneaked the killer into a take where he wasn't expected to be. Minette also hadn't seen the GF costume yet so he was legitimately scared. Sid's line "I'm Sidney fucking Prescott, of course I have a gun" was Neve Campbell's idea. Some easter eggs/references: Sam Carpenter's name is a nod to Halloween and Psycho. Her surname is a reference to John Carpenter who directed Halloween, and if she were to take her father's name she would be Sam Loomis, which happens to be the name of one of the main characters in Halloween AND Psycho (both of which Scream is inspired by). Additionally, Psycho stars Janet Lee, Jamie Lee Curtis’ mother. There is also of course the reference to the shower scene in Psycho. Meanwhile, Wes is named after Wes Craven who directed the first four Scream movies before he passed away in August 2015 from cancer. The movie is literally his Memorial Party. At the very end when the title card appears that reads "For Wes", there is a sound bite of birds chirping. This is due to the fact that in his free time Craven was an avid bird watcher and enthusiast. Furthermore, this particular bird is a whippoorwill - a psychopomp which guides souls to the Centre of afterlife. There are numerous voice cameos from returning cast and crew, resulting in a touching tribute to Wes Craven. Drew Barrymore (Casey), Matthew Lillard (Stu), Jamie Kennedy (Randy) and Henry Winkler (Principal Himbry) from the original all have voice cameos during the party, along with Hayden Panettiere (Kirby in Scream 4), Adam Brody (Detective Hoss in Scream 4), writer/producer Kevin Williamson, producer Julie Plec, composer Marco Beltrami, editor Patrick Lussier and Craven’s widow, Iya. Furthermore, Drew Barrymore is the principal making announcements on the intercom right after Tara is attacked. Matthew Lillard delivers the very meta line "Cool house Freeman!" during Amber's party (which is being held at his character's house) and he also does the voice of flamethrower GF in Stab 8. Lastly, Jamie Kennedy says “Someone’s goofy ass dad is kicking us out” after Richie tells everyone to leave the party. Fans have often criticised Dewey's apparent lack of grief for his sister, Tatum, since the character was hardly mentioned in the sequels. However, this one finally pays tribute to Tatum by showing a box of her ashes displayed in Dewey's trailer. At the end of Scream 2, Cotton Weary joked that Gale had "more lives than a cat" and, in this movie, Dewey reveals that he has been stabbed a total of nine times. Dewey finally dies when he is stabbed for the tenth time, suggesting Scream characters' survival rates align with the legend of cats' lives. Just before Vince is killed outside the club, GF baits him by turning on the high beam headlights of his car and blaring loud music from the radio is a nod to John Carpenter's 1983 horror movie Christine. Based on the Stephen King novel, Christine is about a haunted car that kills people. In both the novel and film it pins someone with their high beam headlights and blares music from the radio. Also, in this movie, the song heard when GF turns on Vince's car before killing him, is Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' "Red Right Hand" which prominently featured in the first three Scream movies. The writers confirmed Sidney's husband "Mark" is Mark Kincaid, the detective in Scream 3. Neve Campbell didn't even know until after making the movie and thought it was funny because she portrayed Patrick Dempsey's sister on Grey's Anatomy in between Scream 3 and 5. In the original when Sidney says she is haunted by her mother's murder Billy says "It’s like Jodie Foster in The Silence of the Lambs when she keeps having flashbacks of her dead father". Sam is Jodie Foster and Billy is her dead father. When Tara is in the hospital she is watching Dawson's Creek, a show created by Scream writer Kevin Williamson. The episode she is watching, titled “The Scare” (S01E11), is an homage to Friday the 13th and involves the characters being creeped out by rumours of a serial killer on the loose in their small town. Joshua Jackson (one of the guys in Randy's film class in Scream 2) played one of the main characters on the show. On top of that, the clip used features Scott Foley (Roman/GF in Scream 3) who guest starred in a few episodes. When Richie is watching a video about Stab 8, the top recommended video is "Interview with Woodsboro survivor Kirby Reed", confirming that Kirby did indeed survive the last movie (The scene was initially going to be a clip of the video and in a deleted scene there is a missing poster of Kirby briefly visible). Another video with the title "Did the real-life Stu Macher survive?" is a reference to how often the idea of bringing the character back has been teased as a possibility in the series despite his apparent death. In fact, an early draft of the Scream 3 script had Stu return as a killer before the infamous rewrites. Everything on the YouTube page is an Easter Egg, right down to the subscriber number 821,939 which is Wes Craven's birthday, August 2nd 1939. Richie's "Did you just hit me with a phone?!" to Tara in the hospital is a reference to Matthew Lillard's improvised line in the first movie. Other attacks that are a nod to the original is Chad's attack outside mirroring Casey's and Mindy's shoulder injury mirroring her uncle Randy's first wound (Mindy's attack parallels her uncle's attack right down to the color scheme of their outfits - both are wearing a light green top and brown pants). In the hospital, Sam is wearing a plain white T-shirt, a subtle nod to Billy's iconic look in the original. And when she stabs Richie to death at the end of the movie, she wipes the blood off her knife in an unmistakably Ghostface-like fashion. So I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree after all. Times when the movie alludes to the real killers: Before Richie introduces himself to Amber at the hospital, he covertly glances in Sam's direction to make sure that she is still fooled into believing that he and Amber are total strangers. Richie's “I’ll be right back” is like Stu in the original (plus, Randy was Mindy’s uncle). When Sam gets a call from GF in the hospital break room, her caller ID says "Maybe: Amber Freeman". Richie watching the first Stab movie in the same room as a sleeping Sam and Tara after the latter has been attacked by GF and put in the hospital, seems like a very insensitive action for Sam's supposedly caring boyfriend, but in hindsight, the character is most likely mocking the sisters for failing to work out that he is one of the killers. Richie and Amber bond and come up with their plan after meeting in a subreddit dedicated to the Stab films, which is likely a blended homage to Mickey & Mrs. Loomis meeting over the internet in Scream 2 and Jill & Charlie in Scream 4. Richie's reveal as one of the killers marks the third time in the series that the killer is played by a member of a famous acting family. Jack Quaid is the son of actors Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan (the latter mentioned in the original). In Scream 4, the killers were played by Emma Roberts, daughter of Eric Roberts/niece of Julia Roberts and Rory Culkin, brother of Macaulay & Kieran Culkin. Furthermore, Chad is played by Mason Gooding, son of Cuba Gooding Jr. Before Sam grabs the knife to kill Richie she is looking for a weapon and spots an umbrella, which is a callback to the one Sid used to stab Billy. This movie ends exactly like the original.

Heida

What I love about Amber's death is that the actress Mikey Madison's character in Once Upon a Time In Hollywood almost dies in the same way. They really like seeing her burn lol

Aimee Stardust

i'm not super surprised you didn't fully connect to the characters in this one. that was the same with a big group of the fanbase, personally i connected right away but that's just me. i think for a lot fans the 6th movie really changed people's minds on the new characters, so i'm super excited to see what you think !!

alejandro

one of my problems with dewey's death scene is why on earth he had to shoot right up close / arm's length from amber's reach??? he shot roman from on top of a hill in the dark in scream 3, i'm sure he could handle shooting amber in the head from a couple meters back... also the super fun part about amber fully being lit on fire is that the actress mikey madison's character in 'once upon a time in hollywood' died by fire !!

alejandro

Scream 6 is quite good, I'm really looking forward to your reaction to it! Yeah, we were all bummed when Dewey got killed, but honestly we knew it was only a matter of time. I'm thinking David Arquette felt it was time to retire the character after playing him for so many years. Had they not killed him off, Scream fans would continously question his whereabouts in any further sequels or just flat out make a fuss that they suck because he's not in them. I have to say though, you've certainly come a long way in regards to the characters of Dewey and Gayle. All one has to do is revisit your reaction to the first Scream and they'll see you weren't too keen on either of their characters lol

Iggy 5150

Don’t know if this was answered yet but it was Dawson Creek on the tv in the hospital

Lenny

Also, very much looking forward to seeing 6 from you. I liked 5 a lot, until I didn’t. It fell apart in the final act for me, so I see where you’re coming from. BUT… 6 is an absolute ride. I love 6 to pieces. It restored all the good will that 5 took away for me. I hope it does for you, as well.

TylerR91

To preface this, I love this movie despite its flaws (it has many in my opinion), and, it's okay that not everyone loves it because, like I said, it has many flaws. But, the directors have said that Dewey's death was the only way they could think to get Sidney back to Woodsboro, story-wise. I have to agree, considering Sidney had no intention of going back (as she says in the film), especially with how intertwined her family/story is with the murders throughout the films and she would be in great danger regardless. I do think my interest of the films decreased with Dewey dying, among other things, so I can see your point. Although, I do think it is a powerful emotional moment in theaters when Courtney Cox discovers that dewey is dead (i cried lol.) But with that being said, your opinion is fully valid in the sense that it is a STUPID decision for dewey to make and I agree that it was somewhat out of character for him to not just go down in the elevator and leave the damn hospital to safety. A part of me also wishes that the films ended with this one, considering it was a great dedication to Wes Craven and a great way to honor the original films. Like you said, this movie was made more for the die-hard fans who have lived with these movies a long time so your comment about it maybe meaning more to those people is 100% accurate, and I don't fault you for not feeling exactly the same way

Daniel Tavares Zlock

So many people don’t understand how genius of a creation Sam is… Billy mentioned that Sidney was like Jodie Foster in Silence of the Lambs who kept having visions of her dead father. 2022. Enter Sam, Billy’s daughter, who keeps having visions of her dead father.

TylerR91

Let me preface this by saying that Dewey is actually my favorite character in the franchise... I'm definitely in the minority with this but the whole Dewey sequence makes sense (to me). Throughout the movies, Dewey has always been extremely goofy, clumsy, and made boneheaded decisions that resulted in him getting stabbed. It's that charm that makes him such a beloved character. The fact that he survived all the movies is more luck than anything. Seeing as how he spiraled after him and Gale split, I see him leaving the elevator almost as a redemption arc in his mind -- protect Tara in the way he wasn't able to protect Tatum, get the killer, get reinstated as Sheriff, get Gale back. It could have been written better than him saying "You gotta shoot them in the head" and leaving, but that is a call back to Sydney screaming that at him in the third movie when he had his hero moment and killed Roman. Still, the man could have done that from 20 feet away but Dewey has never been one to think things through.

iMiller21

ngl this movie is one of my least favorites of the series however the next one is my second favorite after the original

AJ

yeah, that's the thing. this would have been a great send off if he just didn't. go. back. i will never get over that.

Caitlin Marie

I think the biggest meaning from Dewey going to that hospital with Sam to try and save Tara was the fact that he couldn't save or be there for his little sister Tatum so he seemed determined to help and save Tara so Sam didn't have to go through what he probably went through. I was always slightly disappointed in the previous Movies that his sister dying didn't seem to impact him too much, so I feel like this was a nice was of showing maybe the guilt and regret he had about his little sister. Even though it wasn't the greatest writing decision for him to leave the elevator by himself and try to shoot Ghostface in the head, probably could have wrote a better death sequence that really sent home the idea of saving Tara right there.

Artemis Delphinia

personally i think 6 is sooo much better than this one so i cannot wait to see ur reaction to that! also justice for dewey

Jenna

Also Dewey should’ve tried to shoot Ghostface in the head AT LEAST 20 feet away lol

Henri J. Mertens

Every time you mention Criminal Minds, I think how much I would LOVE to see you do something with your favorite episodes: Reaction, analysis, whatever. I think it would be a lot of fun.

Stacey K

I also mentally checked out after they killed Dewey. Which is probably why I found the killer reveal more shocking because I wasn’t bothering to even guess who it was lol

Henri J. Mertens

You asked what Tara was watching in the hospital scene: Dawson’s Creek, a show created by Kevin Williamson, writer of the first 2 Scream films (and Scream 4).

K.N.

I feel the same way about the third one😭 like it’s fun! And I enjoy it! But I struggle to place those 2 they’re just middle of the road I guess🥴🥴

emma🦢

right?! like i've been struggling to put my finger on it - it just feels off for some reason. i think i like it? but then i'm like, but do i?

Caitlin Marie

I feel the same way about this one even if I enjoy it when it’s on I always rank it last or second last idk there’s something about it that I don’t love

emma🦢

i actually did like Mindy and Sarah! just not enough for them to carry the plot for me, hoping i grow to like them more in the next one! it always takes me time to get to know new characters- just look at dewey and gale haha

Caitlin Marie

I also am surprised that you didn’t connect to any of the new cast, I really loved them. Mindy and Tara were my favs in this one!

Alycia Ortiz

Well, that’s something at least!

LexJordan

neve is supposed to return for 7 I think

KER

That's true, they could have just not brought them back but since they did they didn't want them all to live for the 5th time

Terrell

I saw this in the theater and also cried during the Dewey kill scene…rough one to watch but I still really loved this movie and tribute to Wes Craven! The next one is one of the best in the franchise in my opinion.

Alycia Ortiz

editing this reaction was TORTURE because going back and seeing the pure joy Gale/Dewey brought me knowing that i was about to be destroyed in every way.... i'm never getting over it

Caitlin Marie

THIS. THIS RIGHT HERE.

Caitlin Marie

if they would’ve made dewey die with a purpose it would’ve been so much better. like he could’ve died protecting Gale or something

adam berry

i personally don't think it "had" to happen. you could have just let them live and never brought them back, that was an option

Caitlin Marie

the way ur whole mode changed after dewey’s death 😭

adam berry

I had a blue yeti before, I still have it on my desk, but recently I upgraded to an elgato wave 3, and got the low profile mic arm, great mic and mic arm, would reccomend

KER

I can't wait for you to see scream 6! It's sam & tara's story now and I do really like them

Terrell

same

Terrell

GOD the trailers for this movie were so bad, I knew dewey would die too and I caught amber being the killer

Terrell

I SUBBED FOR THIS VIDEO

KER

OMG YESSS

KER

When the trailer came out for this movie I had a feeling they were going to do something dumb. Like killing off one of the main OG characters to keep it interesting and no so repetitive. After Dewy died I was done with the movie as well.

Avi Gossai

Honestly the series for me ends at scream 4. I never got attached to Tara or Sam and now they’re both gone and they won’t pay Neve enough for her to come back what’s the point

LexJordan

im not sure im ready to go through this again..

Charlie Hooper

Can’t wait for you to watch S6!

Alix Ross

LETS GOOOOO!

Alix Ross

Courtney Cox tried to get them to change their minds about killing dewey but they didn't😔 I get why it had to happen tho and I expected going in because the trailers for this movie was SO full spoiler

Terrell

Funfact: It was confirmed that Amber does most of the killings and attacks she was the muscle and richie was more of the brains

Terrell

Been waiting for this reaction! This one definitely falls in top 3

Tony S

YES!!!! I'm sorry but Amber is my favorite ghostface

Terrell

Knowing your initial first reaction to that character to seeing you gradually warm up to them knowing this was around the corner... oh boy! Feel free to send your therapy bills to us

Robbie Corrie

Been looking forward to this one.

Tim

LETS GOOOOOO

iMiller21

Oh god, this is gonna be hell to see the Dewey scene (i am so sorry you had to witness that, Caitlin)

Vencent

Omg omg omg cant wait to watch your reaction!

Cat Rizzo

Woohoo! Here early 🤩
