Age 22, Male, Brawler, Silver-rank
Appearance- Rinzer is an athletic male with above average musculature. He has short, cropped black hair. Six foot tall. Friendly, bright, green eyes, almost always smiling. Wears extremely simple clothes in his day-to-day life, prefers dark colors. When adventuring he wears a steel breastplate, a tattered cape, steel greaves and kneepads. His arms are fully exposed, which is a standout feature of his design. His weapon is a big, hulking pair of gauntlets. He has big biceps and strong shoulders. He is covered in many scars from his life on the streets, a prominent one being the scar on his upper lip. Thick, ten-inch cock.
Personality- optimistic, selfless, caring, humble, hard-working
Abilities- Rinzer is a self-taught brawler. He uses most of the basic Arts in the series such as Quick Step and Steel Soul, but figured them out for himself either through experimentation or copying others. All of his offensive Arts are techniques he came up with himself, and while many of his moves are straightforward, some are trickier due to his life on the streets. He is both a tank and a DPS type of fighter, with above average defenses and explosive power in his punches.
Arts- TBD
Motivation- Earning gold to spend on the people of his home neighborhood of Scadlan, South Scroungetown. Improving his community. Fighting against the local gangs.
Interests- Rinzer doesn’t have much of a personal life or hobbies to speak of. In his free time he hangs around Scadlan helping people out through menial labor or distributing gifts. Perhaps one of his only hobbies is the fantasy equivalent of coupon clipping. He has a near supernatural awareness of every shop that’s having a sale in Imperalis and always seeks them out so he can pick up extra food for the poor or clothes for those who need them.
History- Rinzer Vosk was born outside the walls of Imperalis in the shanty community of South Scroungetown. His father was unknown and his mother was a random drug addicted whore. The first few years of his life were full of all kinds of traumatic experiences and he was exposed to many things a child should never have to see. He loved his mother and tried to take care of her, but she was very far gone and didn't hold much love for her son. Eventually, she owed the wrong people money and got in trouble with the local gang- the Scads- and they came to collect.
A group of three men showed up when Rinzer was six years old and harassed his mother over her debt. She was high at the time and tried to attack the leader with a knife but was accidentally killed during the exchange. Rinzer was watching while hiding, but he was discovered soon enough. One of the gang members suggested they take the kid and sell him to pay off his mom's debt, the second argued they should just kill him and cut their losses. Better than leaving him on the street with a grudge.
The leader, a huge man with hulking gauntlets by the name of Magnus Vosk, thought differently and said he'd handle the kid. Rinzer tried to fight back which Magnus respected but ultimately called him fool for before knocking him out cold. When he awoke, he was in Magnus's home. As far as Scroungetown went, it was a pretty nice place. Magnus was cooking food when Rinzer woke up and the boy was instantly on guard how this man led to his mother's death. He explained himself and how even though it was an accident, she didn't really die last night, did she? She died a long time ago. Some people are like that. They die inside without hope of revival and stubbornly insist on sticking around to make everyone around them feel a little worse. Does that sound about right?
Rinzer is quiet, but it does. For all her problems, she was still his mom. Magnus respects that, think he's a good kid. Rinzer doesn't want to stay but when asked where he would go he didn't have any good answers. Magnus offers to let him stay as long or as little as he likes, it doesn't bother him. Rinzer wanted to know if he felt guilty or something. Magnus ponders that for a bit. Just because his job is to be a bad person doesn't mean he has to be that way when he's off work. Rinzer asks if he's not a bad person then why does he do it? Because sometimes being bad is the only way you can afford to do something good. That flies completely over the kid's head as expected and gets hand waved with the classic you understand when you're older, or hopefully you won't. Kid like you could probably do some actual good if he wanted. Me, I'm in too deep.
The next day, Rinzer snuck away and found out for himself how hard living on the streets was. He was stubborn for a while and kept trying to leave Magnus, but would continually come back every few days where Magnus would laugh at him and his failure before making him food and letting him stay. It took a few months and Rinzer has a lot of scary stories about what almost happened to him because of his stubbornness, but the longer he stayed with Magnus, the less he saw a reason to leave. It was becoming his home before he even knew it, and Magnus his surrogate older brother. Aside from reading, writing, and the basics of brawling, he never explicitly taught Rinzer anything like a father might, but he was always there for him and supported him throughout his youth.
Often, they would go out together and Rinzer would become close to the community of Scadlan through Magnus and his connections. He witnessed firsthand how much Magnus cared about the hellhole around him and the people who live in it, which always made it more confusing as to why he'd be part of a gang actively making it worse. Like Rinzer would eventually one day do, Magnus also did a large amount of charity work and helped people with their problems.
For as close as he came, there was always a distance between them. Magnus kept his work life separate from Rinzer and would often come home in extremely rough shape, refusing to speak about what happened. The only thing Rinzer knew about his job was that Magnus was a high-ranking member of the Scads and that for as many people like him, just as many were afraid whenever Magnus passed by.
Rinzer spent four years with Magnus like this.
Over time, Magnus kept getting roughed up worse and worse. He was working harder and longer and Rinzer hated to see it. One night after coming back in the worst shape ever, Rinzer wanted to do something about it, to the point where he thought about becoming a Scad so he can get strong and protect Magnus. The two of them fought over this a bunch with Magnus beating it over his head how he didn't save Rinzer so that he could go and throw his life away. Eventually, things got heated and Rinzer decided he needed to go behind Magnus's back if he really wanted to help him.
He found the Scads on his own and tried to join up, but ended up getting more than he bargained for. They had recently been sent to search for Rinzer, much to his confusion. They bring him before the boss and it's spelled out that Magnus has been skimming from the top for a long time. Magnus was a very important member of the gang so he looked the other way for most of his career, but lately it's been too much to ignore. Rinzer suddenly understands why he's been coming home in such a bad state, he'd been working even harder to save up even more gold. They interrogate Rinzer and beat him up, only for Magnus to arrive to save him.
What happened next was a blur for Rinzer, but he explicitly remembers Magnus going berserk with his gauntlets and managing to kill everyone that was there while taking mortal damage in the process. He freed Rinzer and try to take him home, but didn't make it very far before collapsing. When Rinzer comes to, Magnus is fading fast. Their last conversation was about why Magnus did what he did. He was stealing so he could help people of Scadlan, and every piece of gold went back into the community. Rinzer does understand why he had to push things and in a moment of weakness Magnus reveals some nihilistic thoughts, believing the world is unfair and that nothing he ever did made a real difference.
Before he goes, he realizes that isn't totally correct and that there's still a chance Rinzer can be the difference he made. He asks Rinzer to do things right and do what he couldn't. Help others as much as you can and try and improve this rotten place. Don't be like me, etc.
As seen later in his life, this left some pretty severe mental scars on Rinzer's development and gave him severe issues. It's the source of why he feels like he's never doing enough, because these expectations were passed down to him with little regard for how they'd make him feel.
Rinzer took Magnus's oversized gauntlets, his last name, and was left alone in the world for a second time. The remaining Scads had burned down Magnus's hideout, too, leaving him nowhere to go. Rinzer had connections with people in the community because of Magnus and he had to rely on them to survive. Many were kind to him, giving him a place to sleep, food, but work was expected. To better provide for himself and not rely on others, Rinzer started becoming a jack of all trades problem solver who went around helping others as much as he could. Following Magnus's example he never spent much gold on himself if he could help it and instead put it back into the community.
As he got older and started growing into Magnus's gauntlets, Rinzer moved beyond odd jobs and onto more dangerous, higher-paying work. Taking the fundamentals of brawling that Magnus taught him, he pushed himself and started to do minor monster extermination, bodyguard jobs, security work and more. Despite the rivalry between districts, Rinzer even branched off into North Scroungetown to start taking jobs there, too.
There didn't seem to be an answer and he eventually decided he can't just sit around and do nothing his whole life so he started busying himself with odd jobs to keep himself afloat. He volunteered all over South Scroungetown to help people with their problems and things got harder as he witnessed more and more of the world around him and all its suffering. Over time, however, he grew close to many of the people in Scadlan and learned more about their life, their problems, and how they ended up in Scroungetown.
It was through these connections he formed with his community that Rinzer found meaning. He found himself a purpose- bettering that community and helping those he cared about. Little by little, he watched as his actions helped return some light to other's eyes and it became his goal to help Scadlan as much as possible.
Rinzer started pouring himself into his work. Eventually, he started moving past odd jobs and onto more dangerous work- purposefully never getting involved in gang stuff, though. He taught himself to fight modeled after the way Magnus did and did unsanctioned monster extermination, bodyguard jobs, and more. He even started to branch off into doing jobs in North Scroungetown despite the rivalry between districts.
When he was fourteen, there was an incident with a girl two years younger than him named Nellie Holcott which will be detailed in her outline. She ended up as his partner in crime after their initial meeting, and they lived together for many years. When he turned eighteen he was scouted by the Imperalis Adventurer's Guild, as he'd garnered a reputation as a problem solver and they believed he might be of worth. They lied about Nellie's age so she could join, too.
Over the last four years, the two have been on numerous adventures together. They aren't the type of heroes who go out and slay monsters routinely, usually sticking to help requests or dungeon crawling for big rewards. As the story begins, Rinzer's work ethic has taken a toll on him and he suffers from occasional bouts of depression. He feels the same way as Magnus did- like no matter how much gold he pours into his community, Scroungetown will never actually improve, which only makes him want to work harder, which only makes his health even worse.
Nellie eventually convinces him to treat himself and try to relax for once, which will kick off the story after she introduces him to a certain massage parlor.
