Extras - S1E5 'Samuel L Jackson'

There’s a seaside town in South Wales called Porthcawl where you’d still see Golliwog toys being sold up until the last five years or so.

2025-10-21 19:54:40 +0000 UTCYes, and the entire film its featured in - David Brent, Life on the Road - is another good watch as well.

2025-10-20 20:04:12 +0000 UTCWhat I really like about this episode, among other things, that an “extra” (Steve Speirs) although appearing in a fair few things, but never broken into mainstream, completely aces the role he’s playing. And turns the cringe level up to 100 perfectly. Almost subverting the premise of the show that extras can’t steal the spotlight which is ingenious casting and writing😂. As always great watch along with you guys.

2025-10-15 10:55:57 +0000 UTC"illegal to display in the UK" Wow, I hope that's not true. The increasing restrictions on freedom of speech in the UK is very concerning

2025-10-15 01:49:11 +0000 UTCI've done that "how do I show them I'm not lying" thing, even when I know I've clearly not lying. This episode is so great and highlights how awkward these situations can be - even when you don't intend to offend anyone.

2025-10-14 21:36:18 +0000 UTCMy Grandmother had a Gollywog. It wasn't until I was an adult that I realised how dodgy it was.

2025-10-14 21:16:30 +0000 UTCDon't think they ever had them in America but her toy is a golliwog which are actually illegal to display in the UK. She was also about to say it's called Sambo before she realized that's considered racist. I think Sambo has a slightly different meaning in America but still racist towards black people.

2025-10-14 20:20:39 +0000 UTCYou need to Check Out Ricky Gervais aka David Brent in Equality Street Music video it’s really funny. 🤣

2025-10-14 19:57:13 +0000 UTCMike's face during the 'Crimewatch' bit is exactly what we're all here to see. I think this episode is brilliant in the way it deals with that fear many people have of not wanting to be perceived as racist. The understanding way the black character dealt with her anxiety on the matter was great too, rather than judging her too harshly.

2025-10-14 17:11:15 +0000 UTCI'm the same. Lip smacking, loud chewing or crunching. Nope! Can't be dealing with that! I hear some people like ASMR with eating sounds. That's my worst nightmare. 😂

2025-10-14 15:58:59 +0000 UTCRicky Gervais really does have an aversion to noisy eaters in restaurants. He adds it to his shows and stage shows often. He thinks he has misophonia (noise sensitivity) and once left a restaurant in LA due to the noise of the person sitting near him.

2025-10-14 15:44:48 +0000 UTCyou need to watch some of ricky Gervais music videos lol

2025-10-14 14:24:04 +0000 UTCYes there was a Samuel L Jackson/Laurence Fishburne mix up about 10 years after this with an American news reporter who ended up mixing them up in an interview. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8s7FdYGwFeQ

2025-10-14 13:17:39 +0000 UTCIt's funny with the Golly toy Maggie had. Those things were essentially a much loved child's character from off of Robertson's Jam and Marmalade. It was pretty much their mascot for about 80 years till round the late 90s. You could collect tokens on the jars and send them off for free golliwog related stuff. They had tons of merchandise with it on. Plush toys, figurines, badges and spoons etc. If you look up something like golly jam or golliwog jam you'll see all sorts. They use Paddington Bear now for their marmalade mascot
Danny
2025-10-14 12:52:31 +0000 UTCSamuel L Jackson wasn't in the episode much because they only had one day where they could get him on set. They was saying how lucky they got him in the first place, so just took what they could get. I think at the time he was promoting Star Wars episode 3 in the UK, so had work around his promotional schedule to do the scenes.

2025-10-14 12:46:51 +0000 UTCThey might be a thing in a few big cities, but most Americans will have never seen one in person

2025-10-14 12:45:04 +0000 UTCIt’s the small things. I love how you guys use series instead of seasons for UK shows.

2025-10-14 09:13:32 +0000 UTCAt first glance I thought you guys weren’t wearing much - then realised the tops were “fleshy” coloured. I know if you were wearing darker tops that could also be called fleshy but …. You know … it’s … um … not your flesh … not that your flesh is any better than anyone else’s …. But you know …..

2025-10-14 09:10:38 +0000 UTCI think you missed the bit where Maggie says about the Rosa Parks incident, "it wasn't in a park, it was on a bus..." Some of the little asides are so funny. 😂
Steve Cox
2025-10-14 08:56:26 +0000 UTCHe also pops up in an episode of Peep Show - can't remember which series but he's in the band when Jez and Super Hans are working at the studio they're recording at

2025-10-14 08:37:21 +0000 UTCMichael Wildman, who play Maggie’s love target in this episode, bares a striking resemblance to a young Roland Gift of Fine Young Cannibals, who did an amazing version of Elvis Presley’s Suspicious Minds back in the 1980s.
Tom
2025-10-14 08:13:36 +0000 UTCYeah the newscaster mentioned an advert that Laurence Fishburne was in and attributed it to Samuel L. Jackson. Jackson didn't let him off the hook. He even said something like "I'm not the only black guy who's done an advert" :-)

2025-10-14 08:03:39 +0000 UTCSteve Spiers (who plays the lonely Welshman) is absolutely majestic in this and criminally underrated I reckon. It's the subplots that often steal the show

2025-10-14 08:01:58 +0000 UTCYou probably recognise the actor at the start from Game of Thrones. He played Baylon Greyjoy. Patrick Malahide

2025-10-14 07:50:40 +0000 UTCReally good stuff. This was the first episode they filmed, they only had Sam Jackson there for a day or so, so barely got to use him.

2025-10-14 07:44:54 +0000 UTCVera Drake is a film by Mike Leigh, it's about a woman who performs abortions in the 1950s. Probably THE worst film to watch on a friends night in.
