The Office UK - S2E5 'Charity'

Comments

Depends how liberal your workplace is

Thaddeus Stone

Whoever said this is how we dress to work talks absolute shite and clearly claims benefits

Mark

Love how this show gets mike lol. Totally gets the premise, love love it

Neil Tolerton

The theme tune is called Handbags and Gladrags, originally written by Mike d'Abo in the 60s... But it came to prominence around this time in the UK with a cover by Welsh band Stereophonics in 2001, just before the Office came out! (Though Rod Stewart also successfully covered it in 1969)

Plum

I’ve lost count of the times your mouths have just 😦😦 in the course of this show. So good

David Guest

4TH TIME! That's amazing Phil. Really happy to hear we can help you feel a bit better in hard times friend. I hope you have an amazing Sunday💚 💜

RegenerationNationTV

Back again for the 4th viewing of this reaction - I mean it's already a great episode, but your reaction to this one was especially brilliant. I'm going through some stressful times at the moment, and this is helping keep my head above water, so thank you, it means a lot. Jesus, THAT kiss though - I actually FEEL that every time - pure electricity - speaks volumes to the writing up to that point and Martin and Lucy's performance.

Phil Robinson

There must be something about men called Neil and dancing. This one is fab too! 😍

Emma Edwards

Please rewind back a second or two after you pause to laugh/comment as this show in particular has so many "blink and you'll miss it" throwaway lines! For example just after that awkward "squeal piggy" bit David says "Who said famine has to be depressing" 😂😂😂

Ian

Correct, Rachel's garb was purely for characterization purposes, and get Mike riled up LOL

Fordy7169

finchi is the new Galactus in fantastic 4 :) his voice is great for VO work. was in a few blockbuster games 2024. a great filmography as well

steven bell

V88

Paul McInally

Yes Mike and Jess, you need to back the video up everytime you really have a laughter fit and start commenting because you often miss the very next line (1st series Ep. 6, the end of the midget/dwarf/elf/pixie chat is an example) they can come thick and fast. One of the reasons that shows like these can bear multiple repeat viewings, you sort of know what's coming but it's still funny and the cringe remains.

Fordy7169

Mike 'moist in her eyes' 😂🤣 Jay has proper rubbed off on him!!

Matt Harwood

Please 🙏 consider reacting To EXTRAS - The Outtakes Are HILARIOUS Also 😁

Claire Smillie

Aww I just Love The Office - I have it & the specials on DVD But I Just Can’t Watch It Alone - I NEED You Guys watching with me, far, far FUNNIER 🤗 What A Chuckle 🤭 xxx

Claire Smillie

You should rewind a bit after pausing in the middle of a joke

Ducactus

3 perfect episodes of TV coming up.

Adam

maybe the best on screen kiss of all time in this episode?? it's gotta be a contender at least

James West

As a big Office fan I advice them not to watch it tbh was a massive letdown and nothing like the series sadly

Michael McMahon

The nineties and early noughties were a bit of a golden age of broadcasting, really. There's a lot of programmes from that era that wouldn't be made today because broadcasters and the entertainment industries in general are far more risk averse than they were 25 years ago.

Charlie

Don’t forget the spin off David Brent movie guys. More cringe for that one

Chris Brierley

Thank you, Rachie, for the recommendation. Just listened and it's fascinating stuff.

Static CentreHalf

Lots of emotions for me in the redundancy-scene, recalling everytime it has happened and the devastation and hopelessness that you feel immediately the shock hits you. Obviously Brent's was not a shock, he was a shit boss =) but still, it stirred up bad memories and feelings.

Christopher Bergren

Ash Atalla (the Producer) gave a lovely interview on 'Desert Island Discs' last week and he said that when they first pitched The Office to the BBC big wigs they described it as being a celebration of nothing happening. Fair play to the Beeb for giving the go-ahead.

Static CentreHalf

Yup, and the end of it won't let anyone down (no spoilers)

Christopher Bergren

Neil is also in a show called Line of Duty, which is amazing. It's not comedy, it's a police drama. Even if you don't react to it, you should definitely check it out.

Karlos

The two-part Christmas special coming up is just BRILLIANT! The whole series is comedy genius but the specials end it in the best way possible, you'll love it!!!

Matt Harwood

Re-watching it all now I've noticed it's hard to tell what he's like until it's complete. A testament to the great writing.

Adam

FYI the latest episode of the Office Ladies podcast is Pam and Angela from the US version discussing the UK pilot with Dawn.

Rachie

tbh, we've seen a lot more than a bit of belly in a late 90's early 00's office, there was a phase of girls wearing their g's strings above their trousers accidentally on purpose too, heh heh.

emu cat

It's funny to see you gushing over Neil because he's meant to be disliked. You clearly see him as a competent, professional and charming. Brits are much more cynical and would tend to read him as insincere and manipulative. Perhaps even a bully. I wonder if it becomes more apparent in the final ep.

Mat

What movie?

Mat

Best series you will react too imo love inbetweeners but i laughed more at this ..ive worked with so similar people in an office environment and just hits home so much lol.. this anything else ricky gervais has done..alan partridge and phoenix nights is must watch

Andy Gore

"It's not a sexual day."

Keith Pratt

Corpse? Bit dark 😂

SpayMe

It isn’t normal to dress like Rachael in a working office, whoever said that is talking nonsense.

SpayMe

What an episode! Smashin stuff

Theloyalmuppet

Also Friday night dinner would be great after this has been finished. 😊

TIMMY TURTON

Brent’s music video - Equality Street is a must watch.

TIMMY TURTON

React to the outtakes of series 1 and 2 as well David Brent Life on The Road 2016

Gerard McCartan

As I said before , The Uk Office is a masterpiece. The american one is a comedy. Tim and Dawn alone, the tesion build is amazing.

Gerard McCartan

Love this episode.

Richard

To reiterate what others are saying, the two Christmas specials are the true finale. So it's worth watching them straight after the final episode, and before the movie.

Jay

You need to do the IT crowd too, it's so funny

Andy McCann

Booyacasha

Thomas Wilkinson

You have to do the specials, the David Brent film, and Brent’s music videos 🤣🤣👍

Jude

😶Booyakasha😶

Danny

The 2 "Special" episodes are amongst the most beautifully written pices of tv i've ever seen and always get a tear out of me. Please watch them as a continuation of season 2 without a long break.

BlakeK80DrumCovers

👍👍

TheHigh

The dance is often featured in lists of top British TV moments

Danny

Thought you got away with the moist comment Mike!

Paul Archibald

I love that during the dance at 18:15 you can see Rachel corpse but they left it in. Also that reveal at 37:58 has to be one of the best moments in television history

Schpleeb

Derek next 😉

Mark E

what you must do with your life, lovely people, when this show ends...is start your Alan Partridge journey

Jazz Chilli

21:00 Brent is what we’d probably refer to as “a bit of a bellend, but not a complete bellend’. What’s so good about this shows acting and writing with Brent is he somehow can make us like him and feel empathy towards him, as we see he’s just lonely and desperate, whilst everything he does is contrary to that.

Scott

Mike and Jess, the 2 Xmas specials are in effect mini-series 3, but set a period after. The out-takes are great too.

Fordy7169

Vicar of Dibley in the rotation DEFINITELY!!!

James Ososki

I would love to see you insert a post-credits scene like in the office. Maybe surprise us when you've watched the second christmas special

Suixamoht

Is the amarican office filmed as a doco comedy???? Or just a stand alone sitcom ?? Hope we get the outtakes

Dango247

I think you should react to the Christmas specials in December. Just so you get the full Christmas vibe that everyone will enjoy 😏

Si

I enjoyed it but I think it’s a little over rated. Might be because he’s made so many good things that it’s slightly diminished returns each time. Still better than most shows on tv

Scott

You should watch Afterlife, another Ricky Gervais show, it's fantastic

Nick Ford

Pretty conservative in the office I used to work in back in the late 80's and those girls were not slow in coming forward either as I discovered the first time I shared a lift with them. (Nothing dirty, just flirting)

David Broome

I hope you're doing the christmas specials

Tony

You should rewind after a pause.. You missed the, who said famine has to be depressing line 😂

CONALL MCLAUGHLIN

Such a good shout

CONALL MCLAUGHLIN

Great reaction! Thanks for confirming you'll be watching the specials after!

bobby g

As many people have said - pleaaaase don't forget the christmas special two parter. That's the true finale.

Hayden Lee Lyon

So glad yous aren’t waiting to do the specials😁x

Caroline

I had a boss like David. He would refer to himself as ‘Big Jeff’. He stood 5ft 6ins in slightly generous heels. He made a point of pecking female staff members on the cheek on occasions such as birthdays and Christmas. His biggest thing every year was entering trade awards and would lock himself away for at least a week working on the submission which would always include multiple mentions and photos of him. He would slump into a terrible mood if he failed to get a story about him in the trade press. Strangely, I don’t think he was a fan of The Office.

Thomas

Like I mentioned before they’re definitely using Rachel’s clothes choices as coding for the character but at the same time that’s not particularly unusual for many offices. The US and UK are very different cultures in that regard, you got most of our Puritans 😄

Kieran B

Another great show coming to an end. You guys definitely need some Father Ted next

Big Sam

Brilliant

Jay Nicholls

Ha, brilliant 🤣

Si

Depends on the workplace. Where I work, the warehouse staff wear work uniform - industrial trousers, t shirts/jumpers, safety boots, high vis vests etc. The managers wear shirts and ties and the office staff wear casual clothes. So very similar to The Office.

Si

Good call from Mike on Dawn French. I think I mentioned her when you reacted to that Marks & Spencer Christmas advert she appeared in. Arguably, her most famous show, The Vicar of Dibley, has been mentioned as a contender for forthcoming show polls.

Thomas

watch the film after the season finishes.

jamestoni

Brent mused

Johnathon Healey

It's absolutely shocking sadly

Johnathon Healey

Don't forget the 2 extra episodes

Austin GT

I saw a clip from a podcast recently where Stephen was the guest, and he was saying that when he and Ricky came to edit this episode, Ricky thought David's dance was a bit too silly / over the top and wanted to drop it, but Stephen persuaded him to keep it in.

Dan G, Leicester

British actors are very well trained and that often includes singing and dancing - especially if the went to LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts) - the Goes Wrong Show I recommended is all done by people that met at LAMDA and formed Mischief Theatre Company.

Kieran B

I love this episode. So good.

Julian

My first job as a junior reporter was with the Slough Express in the late 70s. Did my share of cheque presentations.

Thomas

Dont forget those specials guys its a continuation of those stories in the show.

Superclarky666

There’s a couple of good YouTube videos comparing the UK and US Office from a neutral perspective that I think you might find interesting, I’ll see if I can add them to the playlist

Kieran B

Neil is definitely a bit of a prick as well, but it’s interesting that you like him as they had to show Michael Scott as being good at his job occasionally (compared to Brent, who evidently was half decent at one point, especially before the cameras turned up) to make it work for a US audience - and I think Neil might bridge that gap here for you even though we think he’s competent but just a bit… slimy / smarmy / smug / show-offy / condescending - it’s a bit harsh but I can’t think of quite the right words at the moment (migraine looming so brain is not working properly 😄). He’s ‘corporate’ essentially

Kieran B

Now watch the real Ali G interviewing the Beckhams for Comic Relief. Hilarious.

Thomas

Its not normal to dress like that in our offices. Some people are muppets and don't know what they talking about.

Gsmith

youse need to react to Karl Pilkington and Steve merchant roasting each other. the clips are on youtube. its hilarious

jamestoni

Everything wrong with Brent in that one scene of dancing. Hates any one else whos naturally popular and liked and then proceeds to provide evidence of why he will never be popular or liked. Search out the deleted scenes / outtakes and there is actually the first ever time Brent was on camera in a sort of pilot episode of the office out there.

Gary

@18.15 timestamp during the dance. Watch Rachel break character and start laughing

Luke Dunford

“Coz fanny means arse over there, not… ya minge” 🤣

Emma Edwards

Dont forget the outtakes / bloopers from both series - thery're epic (be careful to not get the larger complication of bloopers though as they have things from other series you haven't watched yet

Jimmy Sandwiches

🤣Mike actually climbed his seat and Jess looked like she was facing an oncoming bus during Tim's charity kiss.

emu cat

Yep, Extras is on par with the Office

Dave Henshall

Mike and Neil, kissing in a tree, K, I, S, S, I, N, G!

Emma Edwards

Dark at the end after work is entirely normal for a third of the year, pitch black by 4pm in December 😂

Jason

Be amazing if you can react to Extra’s. Haven’t seen any reactors do it yet. Genius work

Mark

Wow. You really like Neil! Get a room Mike!

Rachie

Can't wait until you guys have seen it all. It's just magic.

Cal Evans

There's also a movie set after the show with Gervais playing David Brent that's definitely worth watching "David Brent: Life on the Road"

TJCrisp

REALLY glad to hear you’re going straight into the specials. They’re very much part of the show.

Thomas Tom S.

Please react to taskmaster, plebs and friday night dinner, would love to see you watch these, especially task master with greg davies being the host

Sam Jarman

https://youtu.be/iqgAZhXpHV0?si=r4qmK8qFrqs0UIE7

Jay Lo

You could listening to the theme tune. Both great versions

Jay Lo

Say what you want about Brent but he would never dance with your girlfriend!

Adam

For the time that was fairly normal office attire.

Zr0w3n

Timestamp @17:55 Mikes change in rection as it unfolds lmao

mwdoom

Goggled eyed freaks first appearance

Barok

Just walking home and was thinking a bit The Office would be ideal and then 30 minutes later this, perfect timing! Looking forward to watching this when I get home

Kieran B

Neil’s a tw@! Brent FTW

DG

Would be cool if they kept a day towards all the Ricky/Steve shows Extras next then Derek then Lifes too Short

Ryan

Lets gooo finally :D

Joe Michel

Oggy!!

AWR93

Hopefully Extras replaces it when it finishes

mwdoom

Perfect timing
