2025-06-19 16:33:59 +0000 UTCAs a Scottish person its very common to hear Scottish hate English and vice versa. NOW I cant say for English but from comment section yeah they hate Scottish people But I put this down to their media demonising us. HOWEVER Scottish people don't HATE English people in general. what we do HATE with a passion is Westminster AKA the English politics.

2025-06-09 00:33:10 +0000 UTCDon't believe the hype that we all hate each-other lol I was born in East London and am English my family on one sides parents are Welsh, on the other side are Scottish with there family being Irish before that. We are just one dicked up Island which makes us confused and funny. The hate is just Banter, taking the piss out of each-other because we deep down love each other,.

2025-06-04 23:48:11 +0000 UTCAll these stereotypes about nasty southerners, let’s not forget that Margaret Thatcher was born and raised in Grantham, Lincolnshire, which is more north than south, and had Irish blood (County Kerry) on her father’s side.

2025-06-04 21:32:43 +0000 UTCLove Europe and worldwide different cultures, hate the EU and federal Europe, which is largely undemocratic and led by the biggest international banking cartels. There's no party for likes of me lol. That's always been the battle in Britain between federalism and tribalism, since pro-roman/pro-tribe days, both having pros and cons, but with one the cons have a size limitation.

2025-06-04 20:32:13 +0000 UTCMike and Jess , that's a good informative video, pretty much spot on with his technical info. In the International sporting arenas it becomes a bit of a mish-mash depending on the sport. For instance in Rugby Union (15-a-side) Eng, Sco, Wal and the whole of Ireland combine into a team every 4 years to play overseas against ,in turn, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa national sides. This team is known as 'The British and Irish Lions'. When Ireland play on their own it's players from Northern Ireland and The Republic together, never apart.

2025-06-04 14:41:28 +0000 UTCOne of the things that a lot of people outside of the UK don’t realise is that London alone has almost double the population of Scotland, over double the population of Wales and around 4x the population of Northern Ireland, give or take. It’s easy to feel blighted, hence the need to remind people that we are in fact not English, but have our own sense of identity. It’s not - in most cases - that we hate being connected to England or English people, more that it’s easy to feel overlooked or like our voices aren’t heard in the grand scheme of things. Especially when it comes to politics and the voices who speak for the UK in general, but the less said about that the better 😂
Jupiter
2025-06-04 14:33:58 +0000 UTCTrouble is...Scotland hasn't voted for anything near a right wing Conservative government since the 1950s, yet (because of England & NI) has had to endure Westminster Tory, right wing, austerity-loving, Neolib, Brexit Administrations, constantly, from then. I think, us Scots feel more in tune with the more Democratic Socialist Scandinavian Countries...rather than England, where not everything (health, utilities, natural resources etc) is up for someone to make profit... I can't see Scotland putting up with this for too much longer, especially the young Scots whose opportunities to work/live in Europe now stiffled massively because of Brexit...so expect the "United" Kingdom to become a thing of the past soon.

2025-06-04 13:24:59 +0000 UTCCGP Grey is an excellent presenter. You should watch more of his stuff, it's very educational (and his speech slows down a lot in later videos). I especially recommend https://youtu.be/rStL7niR7gs?si=TXjyCII-q0BmBNiN (The Rules for Rulers) - it explains so much about politics in a simple model.

2025-06-04 12:42:45 +0000 UTCThere is a slight mistake in the video that the original creator admitted to in the comments section a while back. When he says, "Just don't call them British," he meant, "Don't call them English," Grey misspoke and never noticed till after the video was uploaded and he wasn't going to take it down to fix it given how popular it got. Most Scots and Welsh have no issue being called British, because it is true. It's like how a Texan is fine with being called American but would hate being called Californian, because it's simply not correct.

2025-06-04 08:54:01 +0000 UTCThe United States is a country of countries technically, as that’s what state means (with caveats). There’s a few countries that sort of fit that definition too like Spain, Germany or Italy - the latter too only became unified countries in the mid to late 19th century
Kieran B
2025-06-04 08:52:01 +0000 UTCTotally agree, Jay. We also tend to offer up a generally positive image of our country. It would, for instance, be interesting to have a balanced look at the Northern Ireland Troubles (documentaries must exist), when we had what was effectively a war fought in out shores over decades, and in the living memory of most of us.
Thomas
2025-06-04 08:50:49 +0000 UTCI would recommend that you don’t upload this to YouTube, CGP Grey goes after reactors

2025-06-04 08:41:04 +0000 UTCThe British Isles contains both islands, so some Northern Irish people calling themselves British is accurate and not at all contentious. As for Rory, well, Northern Irish people are both Irish and British and can hold both passports.

2025-06-04 07:43:45 +0000 UTCIf you ever get a "whinging Pom" (as the Aussies like to call us) moaning at you for not knowing the difference, ask them to explain (without Google) the different provinces and countries of the Netherlands, and the difference between the term 'Holland' and 'The Netherlands'. Guaranteed most will not be able to answer, so you can reply in a patronising tone "What, don't you know?", like some of us tend to do to Americans who don't get the UK/Britain difference. Gets on my jugs seeing so many Brits making negative arrogant comments towards Americans, these days. We tend to berate America for believing they're the centre of the world, yet we tend to act like that ourselves, which is all rather hypocritical. Sorry, grumpy morning rant over.
Jay
2025-06-04 07:42:51 +0000 UTCI think, in general we all get along in the UK. I do think there is tensions when it comes to politics. But most of the name calling and making fun of each other is superficial. A bit like when only you can hit your brother, if anyone else does you both turn on them. I think the general hatred felt sometimes towards England isn't towards us the people, but because Westminster ( Our government) is in London. I'm sure some agree with me but a lot of us in England dont like or distrust Westminster too.

2025-06-04 07:40:12 +0000 UTCNot wanting to confuse anyone even more, but I live in Cornwall in the far South West of the UK. It’s officially English, however many people who live here consider Cornwall to be separate to England - even its own country. The dividing line is the Tamar river. When I worked in Plymouth - on the other side of the Tamar - people here would genuinely say: “oh, so you work in England”. Cornish people are very proud of their unique and ancient culture, which is Celtic and not English. Cornwall even has its own language called Kernewek (with similarities to Welsh) although - sadly - it’s only spoken by a small number of people these days. Cornwall is also a very beautiful place and somewhere you must include on your list of places to visit when you come over. I’d gladly show you around and make you feel very welcome. Thank you for brightening my day with your lovely videos.
Leo
2025-06-04 07:36:57 +0000 UTCNorthern Irish people considering themselves British is obviously contentious (and geographically wrong since Great Britain is an island). But an interesting point to add (trivial perhaps) is that in the Olympics the whole of Ireland competes as an entity. For example Rory McIlroy is Northern Irish but competes for Ireland. It’s very strange, I forget the reason.

2025-06-04 07:30:43 +0000 UTCThe South Sandwich Islands are not inhabited. One of the funniest things about the pandemic, when they had travel bans, then they released lists of countries you could travel to. One of the lists included the South Sandwich Islands. Nobody fkn lives there apart from a few scientists so I guess it was pretty safe from Covid. (Argentina were sneaky and tried to take them during the Falklands War)

2025-06-04 07:24:14 +0000 UTCMy god, that went too fast for me too, and I’ve lived here nearly 44 years! 2025-06-04 07:19:18 +0000 UTCSuperb. CGP Grey is an educator who has been living in the UK for years so he's well qualified on this one. This is his usual pace of delivery but he has done one which is much slower because it's on a much more sombre topic - Americapox. If you ever get to this one, it's worth doing both parts because part 2 about domestication of animals is quite entertaining.

2025-06-04 06:58:02 +0000 UTCAgreed Chris, its always a tricky subject to tackle. Half my family are Northern Irish - My mum and nan were from Lurgan and despite the pair of them moving to England and spending the majority of their lives over here, considered themselves Irish - as do a lot of the family. I was even threatened as a young'un when I went over to see family just because I was English. Weirdly, I think its some of the younger ones, around my age (35 and below) that generally consider themselves British.

2025-06-04 06:53:00 +0000 UTCGot an idea for you - when it comes to your accent video, why not get some of your patreons to record a sentence, send it in to you, stitch them together in a video and you guess where they're from (Answers collated for after your guess) i'd be happy to stitch it together tbf This dude does talk really fast, I know 95% of what was on this video (I'd be lying if I said I knew every commonwealth or overseas territory) but it was hard for me to take everything in as well, so its not just you! A good video though. What he's said should be taken in good fun, and in real life I think it would be but theres something about the YouTube comment section that turns people into pedant wankers isnt there haha. We've got a penchant for thinking each different tribe over here is osme kind of animal fondler. There'll be plenty I miss here but from what i've heard: Southerners think people from Yorkshire shag whippets and ferrets People from Manchester think people from Leeds shag sheep People from Leeds think people from Huddersfield shag dogs People from England think people from Wales shag sheep It's a whole thing haha
Daz Parker
2025-06-04 06:51:36 +0000 UTCWearing pants (or not) has a whole different meaning to an English audience. I can’t speak for the Scots, Welsh or Northern Irish viewers. Nice to hear that we are still in the EU.

2025-06-04 06:46:16 +0000 UTCStrange fact, I’m a fifth generation New Zealander in my 40’s, but my grandparents still literally called England “back Home” even though they had never been there.

2025-06-04 06:39:52 +0000 UTCHaving been born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, but lived for many years in both Scotland and England, I can confirm that England does tend to think itself the 'Master' and the other Nations 'subservient' to the will of the (largely) English Government based in London. Having been in born in Northern Ireland, I can and have applied for an Irish passport, so am officially a dual Nationality - the Irish passport means I am able to travel through Europe without any restrictions, unlike those holding only a British passport, where stays are limited to a specific period per 12 months. The King, being the Head of State has no real powers and, as such decisions are made by the ruling political party and parliament. Mike would not like living in the South Sandwich Islands, given the average daily temperature is 1.8 degrees centigrade (35 degrees Fahrenheit) with summer highs of 46.4 degrees Fahrenheit and winter lows of -19.4 degrees Centigrade (-2 degrees Fahrenheit).

2025-06-04 06:32:51 +0000 UTCPerfect concise explanation of the complexity of the British empire. Being Northern Irish I can assure you that most of the arguments which will ensue below will be genuine and emotionally charged. I am British and proudly so but half of Northern Ireland consider themselves Irish and legitimately so under the terms of the Good Friday agreement which ended (somewhat) decades of us killing each other not so long ago. The depth of feeling on this subject is therefore very raw still. I don’t want to speak for the Scottish or Welsh but I’m pretty sure at least the former are split quite vehemently along the same lines even if the actual wars fought over the issue are much further in the past.
Chris Carleton
2025-06-04 06:28:00 +0000 UTCQuick heads up, the island of Ireland’s residents largely reject being lumped into the British isles, these days you would say Great Britain and the island of Ireland. At 46, I’ve lived in the UK for most of my life. This video taught me something new: there’s a British territory in the sea next to the Levant, an area in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. If that region ever becomes more stable, I’d love to visit it. I imagine it has a pleasant climate.
