Best Birthday Ever (My Hero Academia)
Added 2025-03-07 16:00:02 +0000 UTCThanks to everyone who helped me with my test posts yesterday. I'll be taking them down after this goes up. Going to be trying something different for at least a little while and if it winds up feeling like it works for me, it'll become the new normal going forward.

This new process is going to take me a while to adapt to, so if you see any mistakes or ways for me to improve, feel free to let me know. On the subject of the EPUB file specifically, you will need to find a preferred EPUB reader on your end to utilize them. EPUB is more of a third option for those who prefer it.
If you have any further questions about this change in operations, feel free to join the Discord and ask me there and I'll get back to you ASAP!

I appreciate it, and thanks for the response!

2025-03-08 20:17:21 +0000 UTCYeah going forward I'll try to remember to do that before I save them. Google Doc is the only one that's editable after the fact and also the only one I remembered to put the summary in lol
Cambrian
2025-03-08 17:52:11 +0000 UTCFair enough, do you mind including the summary at the beginning of the document the links lead to?
JRC
2025-03-08 17:50:45 +0000 UTCYeah, the only issue is that the summaries are what got two of my posts dinged in the past week lmao, so it's all a little iffy. I'm still fiddling with it though
Cambrian
2025-03-08 16:09:31 +0000 UTCPersonally, I prefer the old method. Especially since I often simply read the story/chapter in the email. However, it's obvious to me why you're trying this method out. Patreon censorship/banning was mildly annoying BEFORE they largely turned the process over to brain-dead machines. That being the case, I'm willing to stick it out with you. Just a few thoughts, however. One, I think the links to… I believe they are filters? Should help bingeing a great deal (admittedly, I'm a binger myself). Two, could you continue providing a summary? I really do appreciate them. That being said, I'm all in favor of the change- not because I enjoy the experience more, but because I'm hoping it'll result in far fewer headaches going forward. I'm still sore I never ended up enjoying your Naruto story that got canned.
JRC
2025-03-08 14:57:40 +0000 UTCPretty much yeah, haha. I'm all for paying for services tbh. I send Questionable Questing $30 a month to help it out because of how integral they've been to my success as a writer over the years for instance. But Webnovel feels less like a service and more like someone robbing me so I'm never going to give them a cent of my money if I can help it
Cambrian
2025-03-08 01:08:50 +0000 UTCDamn that's really fucked up. I didn't know they had a limit on stories per profile. They really charge for everything there. Nothing but leeches.

2025-03-08 00:58:30 +0000 UTCIts strange, because only a few people can't access the image through mobile, everyone can access it through PC, and some can access it through both. I've gone ahead and added a link to the image into the Patreon Post at this point and that might be what I do from now on going forward for any poll winners with images.
Cambrian
2025-03-07 23:44:38 +0000 UTCI was able to open all the files before but when it comes to the images that are provided the that doesn’t work. I know them from the poll but if this format is used from now on then I myself won’t be able to see the images anymore. I think the old format was fine before

2025-03-07 23:27:40 +0000 UTCI'm on the fence with the change. But since I love your stories I'll give it a chance.

2025-03-07 22:15:01 +0000 UTCSwitched to the Brave browser. G-docs still works well. Hopefully we can have spicier content going forward with this method.
RanmaChaos
2025-03-07 21:16:52 +0000 UTCI intensely dislike the change. Not that you provide the option of reading the story via downloadable file or google docs, but that we are FORCED to do so.
Inirlan
2025-03-07 21:07:39 +0000 UTCHeh yeah, unfortunately it's not quite compatible but I still appreciate the suggestion all the same
Cambrian
2025-03-07 21:06:50 +0000 UTCActually, there might be a solve for the subscribe once, get all, even if it's gonna sound a bit lame. Basically, every new chapter, make a copy of the doc, add the chapter, and delete the old doc. If you just add a line in your boilerplate per chapter that "If the link doesn't work find the latest chapter for a working link". I'm not sure if this is compatible with what you want to do, but I already wrote this when I saw you reply, so might as well just put it out there.

2025-03-07 21:04:31 +0000 UTCI really appreciate you trying to make it work with me all the same <3
Cambrian
2025-03-07 20:53:28 +0000 UTCyeah unfortunately there might not be a good solution to that. at the end of the day, my exclusive content isn't so much supposed to be for binge reading as it is supposed to be for those who want to keep up with the weekly or daily updates from my story polls or free writes respectively. I don't want to alienate those who binge read through my patreon, but tbh patreon was already pretty bad for binge reading to begin with. not sure if there is a solve other than to just try to make it work.
Cambrian
2025-03-07 20:51:16 +0000 UTCCam, personally I prefer going to the Google doc from my phone, but if this is going to be the way forward for the ongoing stories as well, you may want to consider having the docs contain multiple chapters rather than a single one per doc. I understand you can't have a living doc that continuously gets updated because then someone could sub for one month and have a link that continuously gets updated. I also understand that you don't want to have so many docs that contain previous chapters that it's basically in the order of "number of words" squared. I don't have a good solution (my first draft ended up amounting to something worse than reading the publicly published chapters on AO3), but to be honest, I don't like binge reading your stories on the Patreon app because there's no easy jump from chapter to chapter. I don't know we have a good solve for that.
RHar
2025-03-07 20:45:42 +0000 UTCI love your stories, but really don't like this change. That being said I plan to keep trying because of how great your stories are.

2025-03-07 20:41:14 +0000 UTCAppreciate the feedback, still considering how to present it all and what to have in the post and what not to have.
Cambrian
2025-03-07 17:53:01 +0000 UTCYeah, I'd probably still be begrudgingly posting there like you suggest if it wasn't for that shitty 20 story limit on each account. I've already filled up the two Webnovel accounts I already have, CambrianBeckett and CambrianBeckett2 lol. And I can't be bothered to just keep making new emails to keep making new accounts and I doubt they would let me either once they figured out what I was doing to circumvent their stupid 20 story limit in order to not have to pay them for more story slots. As for files making it easier to plagiarize, tbh people could always copy/paste my stuff anyways so I'm not sure its all that much easier or harder. Hell, there's an entire pirate website out there that constantly scrapes most people's Patreon Exclusive content and posts it for free for people to view/read at their pleasure. Ultimately, while anyone who plagiarizes me on Webnovel is the scum of the Earth, the truth is... they aren't really hurting me too much because of the nature of my work's 'exclusivity'. Everything on my Patreon is on a timed release anyways, and most of the time the Webnovel plagiarists are just taking the stuff I already posted on my public websites and reposting it to Webnovel. I've basically already been paid for the writing they're stealing from me, so as much as I hate them for doing it, they aren't going to hurt my business at least. It just sucks when they trick people into thinking they wrote my works. Even worse when they make entire Patreon Pages for themselves for 'exclusive' content that is available on multiple other websites for free like someone did with An Iron Resolve the other month. But ultimately, Webnovel is just so user-unfriendly that I can't continue using it even just to stop the plagiarists. I would literally have to start paying Webnovel just to be able to post more stories in order to do so, and that's what those fuckheads want lol. They're basically running an online protection racket over there at this point and I want no part of it.
Cambrian
2025-03-07 17:51:49 +0000 UTCChange works for me, only minor comment is that it might be good to put the summary in the post instead of only with the attached versions
Sara
2025-03-07 17:51:43 +0000 UTCYeah, that place is awful. But if you're distributing your chapters as files now, that makes it easier to plagiarize which is why I was suggesting it. Because even if not many readers go there or even if you cannot format it as you would like, the actual text would already be there as your own so if someone were to take your stories and publish them there as theirs you could claim plagiarism and since your story would also be on their platform they might be more compelled to actually do something.

2025-03-07 17:19:09 +0000 UTCOdd. I just tested it on my desktop and it's working there, but I still can't open up the image link when I use an android emulator either. Eh, wierd quirks of the systems I guess. Anyway, keep up the good work o7

2025-03-07 17:18:06 +0000 UTCOdd, it seems to be something related to your phone then that doesn't allow you to view the picture then? I really don't know what's happening there unfortunately. As far as page setup, thats how I originally changed the page color, but I did just find out I could make it pageless and that would expand the dark parts a lot to further reduce eye strain, so thats what I'll probably try doing going forward
Cambrian
2025-03-07 17:16:01 +0000 UTCNot bad at all for a change, I didn’t mind. If anything it just helped me understand the format of Doc stories even better. Can’t wait to see the rest like this💯

2025-03-07 17:15:03 +0000 UTCOdd, it seems to be something related to your phone then that doesn't allow you to view the picture then? I really don't know what's happening there unfortunately. According to another user they can still access the image on their PC but not on their phone, while even more users have stated they could access the image via mobile (and so can I)
Cambrian
2025-03-07 17:14:25 +0000 UTCGetting a 403 (your client does not have permission to get URL) when clicking the image link on mobile. There's no pop-up, just goes straight to the error.
ssthehunter
2025-03-07 17:08:37 +0000 UTCIt works on PC, but I get a 403 error on mobile. Client does not have permission to get the url. To get even the margins, you go to File>Page Setup, and change the color there. Or maybe I am full of shit, because is the correct color on PC too. Mobile is just fucky, as usual.
Tristan R Mitchell
2025-03-07 17:06:35 +0000 UTCI know, that's what I did. I used the setting to change the page color to black and then changed the text to white to reduce eye strain for readers. I just can't change the magins unfortunately. You should also get the pop up on mobile as well, or at least I am and those I'm talking to on my Discord are getting the popup and are able to navigate to the image in just two clicks. It'll open a new tab though to do so.
Cambrian
2025-03-07 16:58:43 +0000 UTCThere is a setting to change the page color. Unfortunately, it is a GLOBAL setting, so it would change all your new documents in the future unless you change it back. As to the picture, I'll check when I get back to my laptop. I'm on mobile rn.

2025-03-07 16:49:00 +0000 UTCHey, appreciate the suggestion. I actually did try posting on Webnovel for a year or two a while back but ran into some major issues. For one, Webnovel doesn't let you use simple things like italics or bold formatting unless you pay them to unlock the 'privilege' and also doesn't give you more than 20 story slots unless you pay them for more, and I had already hit the limit and made a second account with a second email that was close to hitting the limit within one year of starting to post there. For two, their numbers are bogus and incredibly inflated, so you will see stuff like "wow this story has a million views!" when in reality its more like 100k or less. And for three, like you said, the plagiarism on that website is utterly unreal and completely unchecked. Ultimately, I've given up on Webnovel as a website by this point, heh. Hugely scummy place that I no longer have the mental bandwidth to keep trying to deal with.
Cambrian
2025-03-07 16:34:02 +0000 UTCJust a comment. If you're going to start distributing your stories like this you should consider creating a profile in webnovel and publish there too because very often there are bastards who will take fanfictions and publish them there as their own since they can charge for the published story there. If you report plagiarism in Webnovel they will say they will deal with the situation and then block you instead of taking the story down. To prevent this potential issue I suggest you publish your stories there yourself, because webnovel will take down plagiarism, but only if the plagiarism is of works already in their site. They seem unconcerned about plagiarism of outside works.

2025-03-07 16:30:21 +0000 UTCI really appreciate people being willing to try to adapt with me <3
Cambrian
2025-03-07 16:22:50 +0000 UTCWell, this will definitely take some getting used to :D Guess I'll be using the Docs going forward
godUsoland
2025-03-07 16:19:46 +0000 UTCThat's intended. I cannot change the margins unfortunately, but I could use a dark gray background with white text to ease the eye strain as much as possible on my end. The picture link should work if you click it once and then click the pop-up. At least, that's how it works for me.
Cambrian
2025-03-07 16:07:48 +0000 UTCFor some reason, the google doc has a black/dark gray background and white text, but the margins are still white. Also, the picture link doesn't work.
