The surprise at the end was great from first watch, but the episode as a whole has grown on me quite a bit over time.

Cobel having to hear Hellena accusing her of having "ego, hubris, and arrogance"... Cobel replying that everything she has accomplished she EARNED through hard work and industry, not being born into it, just to have Hellena say she is overestimating her contributions, and underestimating her blessings. Hellena probably isn't aware Cobel is the real inventor severance, but holy shit, what a slap in the face for Cobel anyway. I like this episode more and more every time I see a new reaction to it.

2025-09-24 03:15:13 +0000 UTCProbably already explained in the comments under the uncut post, a lot to read between the lines with this one but I think the main points are: Lumon set up a factory in this town > Cobel was a child factory worker > used to get high on gas as a child probably to deal with the fact that she was doing manual labour at 8 years old > her mother died while Covel was studying under some Lumon scholarship/education program > eventually Cobel created Severance as a way to separate work/life personas, implicitly due to the trauma of being a child labourer > Lumon industries left this town at some point to pursue other business ventures, effectively squeezing the town dry and exhausting it’s people to the point most of them are dependent on drugs to cope
