Colored

Green!!!

Pic 1 is base color, green because I'm bad at using it and want to get better. I specifically chose one that I would never use to begin with.

Pic 2 is the majority of color segmentation added. I almost always go for a light-colored underbelly, and a dark-colored backside, as this is a common form of simple camouflage in nature. If you look at an animal from below, the sun is above you; the sun is a white light, so the underbelly of the animal you're looking at is lighter. The inverse is true when looking down at an animal; the ground is dark, so the top/backside of an animal is dark to match. I'm always ripping off nature her design skills are primo.

Pic 3 is after quite a bit of fiddling with lighting and values trying to better understand how to work with green. Green and yellow naturally tend to speak with each other, and pure yellow feels lighter than pure green, so I yellow-shifted a lot of the lighter values. In darker areas I ran with a yellowish orange, which keeps the colors analogous with one another. There's a subtle blue light affecting the right side of the character to break up the monotony of the colors. Red is in the shadows to compliment green. Pp is semi transparent too.

Pic 4 is after adjusting some hue/saturation/brightness sliders and doing a little bit of color balancing through CSP. The entire palette was red shifted because lo and behold green is hard and I love red. I also pushed the lighter values further, and really focused on the texture of the moss/algae.

Pic 5 is after the usual spiel of shadow, background, texture, etc for the background. If you can imagine it, place this character on a blue background and feel how that changes the way he appears vs the red. To me the red is a very intense and dramatic color, where a blue would be more neutral and maybe mysterious.

If you ever have a question about a particular part of the process lmk and I'll see what I can do
