2025-08-02 02:15:28 +0000 UTCI love how when you think about Roswaal's mentality, the creation of the Sanctuary, Beatrice's solitude in the Forbidden Library.. it all comes down to being hurt from a massive loss in the past and being afraid to get hurt again. Everyone this season has been going down the path of isolation to protect the thing they care about most. Subaru was doing it the first half of the season as a result of his personal loss of Rem. Roswaal's path of isolation has been set from when he lost Echidna. The parallels are crazy. Roswaal's mentality of "sacrificing everything, even his own self worth, for the sake of his goals"... its certainly not that different from Subaru's desire to save everyone at the expense of his own self worth. Roswaal's belief system is a reflection of himself. His general view that people are fundamentally weak thus we must focus everything on one single thing to even succeed. That mindset is the foundation of what he is. Someone so driven to sacrifice everything for the sake of his goals as proof of his conviction and resolve. Even in Episode 11, he said to Subaru "perhaps you can restart but I cannot. My life will end here.. but that is fine. Cos when you return, another me will be there. And as long as he fulfills my goal that's all that matters." That is Roswaal's madness. Someone who has sacrificed his humanity as a coping mechanism for his loss and lack of strength to do anything. The Sanctuary being a place of safety from the outside world even feels like a commentary on the state of the shut-in loser. Subaru, Garfiel.. even Beatrice can be considered shut-in's who closed themselves off from others as a coping mechanism for a traumatic event in their past.. which eventually became an unhealthy crutch to hide from their problems. The same for Roswaal. The question now will be.. can he change?
