LESSON #2 - “MASTERING 2 COMBINATIONS” | Learn Korean w/ J&J!

Wooohooo 🎉 We're back with another episode of “Learn Korean w/ Jared & Jordan!”

Today, Teacher Wonji teaches us how to read and master combinations of two Hangul characters.

We’re hoping to film some BTS-related reaction videos with Teacher Wonji as well. Let us know if you have any content recommendations for these videos!!

NOTE: For the time being, we will NOT be setting a specific frequency for release of videos in this series. This is due to the HIGH editing bandwidth these episodes take. However, we will tentatively plan to release a piece of content (video, post, etc.) every 2-3 weeks.

ARMY, as always, we truly appreciate your love and support (WE’LL CONTINUE SAYING THIS UNTIL THE END OF TIME). This is awesome. Thank you 💜

After 9 months of studying Korean I still have problems pronouncing ㅡ and 를 는 etc. So I do understand very good Jared and Jordan with the pronounciation of ㅗㅛ and ㅜㅠ. I would like to know more sentences for daily use than words like Idol, Fan or something like that. 켄지 씨 (is that correct?) 고맙습니다! 💜💜💜

Jordan, I don't think Teacher Wonji was fully able to understand your questions. ㅗ and ㅛ DO sound more like the o sound in the English word 'boat' while ㅜ and ㅠ have the "oo" sound from "spoon" or "you." At least as far as I've learned so far in my own studies and what I've been able to pick up with my relatively untrained ear while watching K-dramas and other content.

This pace is fine, if you want opinions on the matter. I’m off work at the moment but I’m volunteering and have 3 kids to look after, and I still haven’t got to lesson 1.5 🤣 I’ve watched lesson 1 four times, it’s so long and in depth I have to break it into 3-4 chunks and watch on different days. I then go to duolingo and practice for a few days then refresh with you guys and Wonji. I’m astounded at my progress already, I’m reading Korean which is awesome. There’s a few Korean natives on TikTok who do little 3 minute vids which are cool too so I’m practising a couple of hours a day between all these forums and I might be ok when I’m in Seoul in June 😱

Thank you so much for this series! I've been learning along with you, and Wonji is such a great teacher. I never thought I would be able to read Hangul! Even if I can't understand what I'm reading lol. I really appreciate the way it's edited as well, with everything up on the screen. It must take forever to do, but its super helpful! Thank you xxx

Christina

Respectfully, sometimes I feel like Teacher Wonji isn't understanding your very valid questions! Haha. It's unfortunate, but definitely tough with remote learning + a new language, plus English is a language she said she's still learning herself! In any case, she and you guys are wonderful!

Hi! Another fun lesson! About 2 vowels next to each other: I think it would be helpful to remember that letter combinations (blocks of letters) are syllables, not letters, as they've been called in your lessons. Syllables are made of 2 or 3 letters in a block (occasionally 4 letters). If there is a single vowel sound in a syllable, it's got to start with the silent ㅇ. So the question y'all had about 아이 (kid), if you remember blocks of letters are syllables, kid is clearly a-i and not ai (not one syllable, like y'all were asking). This is so hard to explain! Looking forward to the next lesson!

Hi Liz!!!! 😀💜

I haven't watched this yet but I can't wait. I really do have to review more extensively the first lesson. I started working a bit ago and haven't been able to practice like I wanted too 😕. But will work on it for sure. Love you guys. Thank you for this. 💜💜

I love catching Teacher Wonji on Instagram. She’s great.
