It's been quite some time, perhaps too much time since I last drew up my garden gnome, Greenwise. A good but grumpy lad who has lived in the houseplants of my husband and me through two moves and two states so far. But I'm happy to report that he's never been happier! Now that we finally have a backyard (a real one!) he has been busy making himself at home, and helping to tend our robust garden. I'm not sure how much credit he can reasonably take: I think the Oregon soil and sunshine does a lot of the heavy lifting but Greenwise insists that he's the one keeping the majority of pests off our produce and dying leaves pruned off of healthy plants. He's probably right, he tells me a good garden gnome is one that you never know is helping out because everything will just look effortlessly better. But we feed him some of what we're having most days and he likes to relax (usually in the buff as he's a little naturist) and watch tv with us, and of course loves to be outdoors with us in our shared garden nearly every day. For these reasons he's become family, even though he might not be ready to admit that.
