I think the main moral of the story is that God will not violate our free will. We love Him only by choice. Otherwise, the love would be of no value to God. He can make us people who are going to heaven instead of hell, and who do good works for the right reasons; but you have to let Him do it. It all starts with asking God to forgive your sins (and yes, you are a sinner), and believe in Jesus Christ. He paid for your sins so you don't have to. Again, you must choose to let God take over.
