A couple of recent sketches + time lapse videos

Just wanted to share these sketches and their time lapse videos.

The first sketch is sort of based on an idea for a roguelite game that I've been thinking about for a while. It would be a game where you collect valuable items, and after each run return those valuables to your demon mistress to impress her and get rewarded. I like roguelites a lot so it would have been a fun game to make. Still just toying with ideas like that though.
If you look at the video or PSD file for this one you'll see I tried to separate each part of the picture into its own layer of local colors, with a separate lighting layer clipped onto each of those local color layers. There are benefits to that, where I can be a bit more quick and carefree with my brush strokes since the clipping mask ensures the strokes stick within their intended area. But oh man, it's been another strong reminder of my distaste for layer management lol.

So, for the second sketch there you see me stick to doing everything on a few layers instead. It does mean I spend more time cleaning edges, but it also saves time I would have spent managing layers, and it's ultimately more comfortable to me to sketch this way. I do think there are likely contexts where separating things into multiple layers makes sense though, depending on what's being painted.

I hope you guys like the sketches. :)

Thank you! Glad to hear you like how they turned out. :)

I'm very satisfied with these compositions. Great depth and world building in the environments. I love the color palettes you chose. That gold purple, grey, red, pale yellow, and dark brown combo for the left one is working super super well. And the bath house scene is superb with the colors also. Love that level of saturation in the turquoise waters. The reflection in the shadow of the white stone is also looking really great. Delicious scenes. Delicious paintings.

I think the main reason I don't solely focus on the money shots is for the sake of variety. I spend so much time painting a picture that if the picture didn't have some variation in what characters do or what objects or environments were there I'd probably get bored. ๐Ÿ˜… I usually try to first sketch out the pose and make sure it's got a satisfying view of some interesting action, and then I build a story and environment around it that ideally helps lead the viewer's focus towards that action.

Thank you!

Glad to hear it ๐Ÿ˜„

Hey Calm, can I ask how you brainstorm ideas for the compositions? While you could just get away with painting "money shots", you always seem to go the extra mile of adding a ton of little details like terciary characters performing some action, or some near by props that add some element of story or intrigue to the image. Curious what your process is for that.

Love your style!

Love rougelites to death, would love to play one in your art style, keep us posted!

If you're thinking 2d I understand Godot is a great option. Unreal might even have a little too much extra weight.

Thank you! I did use CSP for one of the sketches because of how I wanted to try working with many layers and clipping masks. I sometimes run into bugs in Paintstorm when using clipping masks, so it felt safest to use CSP in that instance. ๐Ÿ˜… I don't really export my brushes from Paintstorm and into CSP though, I just remake the ones I want from scratch. The brushes I use are simple enough that remaking them hasn't been a problem. As far as I'm aware, brushes in Paintstorm sadly aren't compatible with other software.

Happy to hear you like it, Matty!

Thanks, Mithos! I'll keep that in mind. :) I think I might be likely to try to use Godot, at least if I go with a 2D game, but we'll see! I do have a tiny bit of experience with UE from college, so it's probably my second choice if Godot doesn't work out the way I hope. ๐Ÿ˜„

Thank you, I'm glad you find a lot to enjoy even in the sketches. ๐Ÿ˜„

Hello Calm! First of all, great job! I love it! I noticed that you are using clip studio, how were you able to export your brushes package? I tried it and it didn't work, thanks for your time.

Love this kind of stuff from you!

Game idea sounds awesome, and sounds doable! I only really know Unreal Engine, but if you have questions about anything let me know!

This is a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one! ๐Ÿ˜น๐Ÿ˜ป That rogue-lite game idea sounds great, I'd definitely play something like that ๐Ÿ˜ธ The sketch for it looks great too. I really like the rather large scale of the scene, seeing so much of this lair. There's a lot of depth to the scene, with the 3 characters and furniture in the foreground, another character, furniture and pillars in the mid-ground, then even more pillars and the hint of the outdoor scene in the background. The lighting and levels of detail really add to this depth, with the greater levels of detail within the foreground, gradually fading, with the furthest pillars and mountains being shown as silhouettes. And I do enjoy how the warm light from the exterior bleeds into the cave, bathing the stone-work. The textures and details for the scene all look very nice too, I especially like all of the shining metallics for the gold objects and coins that are scattered around. The stone thrones have really nice textures and details, particularly the foreground one with its various indents and cracks. Definitely like the characters, always happy to see purple ladies, even better when there's multiple hues of them ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ’œ I particlarly like the standing lady, with her stark lighting as the warm light bathes her front, with her backside in shadow. The shining gold jewellery all over her is a great contrast to the cool purple of her skin too. The middle lady is my favourite. I love the desaturated tones of her skin but with some warmth added from the rim-lighting. Her pose is so sensual too, seeing all of the lovely, curving contours of her back, bum and extended leg, but with her nudity tastefully hidden as she lounges against her male companion. The hand on his chest is a particularly nice touch. The lowest lady looks great too, I also like the cheeky hiding of her nipple behind her arm, as well as the bright light that shines down onto her lower back. The hair looks lovely as well, cascading down with a reddish light to make it pop. ... I'd better move on to the second sketch, this length is getting out of hand ๐Ÿ˜… Well, you immediately know that I am going to be very happy to see the union of Luke and the bath-house Lady, especially seeing a hint of that so soon after the previous full illustration ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅฐ I'll try to be quicker in my thoughts on this one... emphasis on "try". I'm immediately struck by the colours here, both characters look so vibrant and warm and they pop beautifully against the blue-green of the water. I love the colours of the water, being a more blue-green in the fore-ground and then transitioning into this green hue towards the background. I especially like how the pillars in the background receive this green tinting from the water, as well as some warm light from above, making them look quite vibrant. The poses for the characters look so good too! I like the angle for Luke here, with some slight foreshortening too. Despite his pose being simpler, he does get some dynamism, with that twist to his body as his shoulders turn and the asymmetry in his arms as well. The lighting is extremely striking on him, with strong, warm tones hitting his face and chest and arm, while a cooler green-white light hits him from behind, with shadows framed between them. I really love the contrast that this gives him, as well as how much depth is given to his muscles. I especially like his right arm, which receives both coloured lighting, with the shadows on the arm also gradually becoming cooler as they move down. And lastly for him, I like the placement of his left hand on her body, there's just something a little intimate about that touch and I always like seeing that in a scene ๐Ÿ˜Š As for the lady... Her pose is simply marvellous! She looks so sensual with how open her body is as she raises her arms and her thighs spread wide for Luke. I really like her expression too, with the blue makeup on her eyes standing out against her vibrant, warm skin as she closes them and lets her lips hang open. The lighting on her body looks so vibrant and beautiful too. I simply love the warm, bright light bathing her face, arms and ample, sensuous breasts, growing darker beneath them and being tinted by the cool water beneath her. As with Luke, the bright, strong rim-lighting does wonders for her, really accentuating the shapes of her arms, breasts and legs, all while adding even more contrast and vibrancy to her. I do particularly like the lights on her breasts, adding even more volume to them and accentuating the overlap between them. I just adore this second sketch, the characters look amazing and the whole scene is so vibrant and beautiful. The bath-house lady looks glorious too and it's great to see her joining in on the fun with our protagonist ๐Ÿ˜ธ Terrific work on these "sketches"! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

Thank you! :3 And yes it's kinda terrifying, one would think otherwise seeing how the industry makes so much money but no... hahaha aside from that i haven't found a job like that is that in my country there aren't many medium/big companies developing games, only small ones with equally small salaries hahaha but you're right! at least right now i have a safe job i even made a simple website for an artist! that was interesting :D I will also cross my fingers for your rouge-lite to exist ahaha

Tredok Vayntrub

Thanks, I'm glad you like the game idea! And I'll keep my fingers crossed that you get to make your dream game. The thought of having a job in game development honestly kinda terrifies me. ๐Ÿ˜… The job security seems pretty shaky across the board, especially these days. So maybe it's not a bad thing to be doing it on the side of a different job right now.

Calm

Happy to hear you think so, Vurt!

Calm

I'm glad you like it! Let's hope I manage to figure out how to make it sometime ๐Ÿ˜…

I love that Rouge-lite game, as long as the demon mistress gives rewards i would keep collecting stuff! It's a good excuse lore-wise to keep going in and collecting stuff, i love it. I personally have been into game development since university and ever since i came out it's been very hard to find a job in game development that actually pays a livable wage... so now i work on web development :/ hahaha Oh and i loooove the demon girls in the first sketch i really like how they look and their skin colour.

Tredok Vayntrub

Man that one on the right is passionate a.f.

vurt

Big fan of the roguelite idea! I would love to see that as an actual game!
