I definitely don't like this movie for the plot or writing. But it is a good spectate visually and musically. It's a movie that makes more sense when you go back to it, even more after you watch the final movie. Maybe Anno wanted to make a movie that world built and told the plot visually not so much verbally. I don't think he did a great job though. Also I guess it's netflix you are watching? I've never watched their version but the subtitles are horrible, that's pretty sad for such a big company. The translations on some things are quite off, some lines get cut off and some just don't show up at all. Still i'll always appreciate it for the music it gave us.

You asked about Shinji being in the eva for 14 years. In the end of 2.22 Shinji's sync rate went so high he lost his physical form. Shinji was inside Unit 01 similar to the episode with the shadow angel. Eva 01 some how got placed in space. Asuka decelerates the container it is in to deorbit it. The Wunder at this point is being built. -TimeSkip- They would probably have removed the entry plug and then placed 01 inside the pre-built core. They manage to recreate Sinjis body with the LcL of the plug some time later. -TimeSkip- Shinji wakes up.
