When holders of Titan powers transform they create a small explosion from the energy they release. However for Bertholdt that "nuke explosion" transformation is his secret weapon on top of being the Colossal Titan. In short, Bertholdt blew up the area around him.

3x16, 3x17, 3x18....You are now about to watch what I like to call the "Trauma Trinity" of episodes for season 3. Enjoy!

they don't have access to coffee or to herring, these were like early hints at the outside world

pretty sure in germany there's a rather explicit clause that if your orders would be war crimes/go against human rights you have to disobey them

she was a bit cold but also, she was military police/secretly the female titan in the second half of season 1 and then got revealed so we basically got to see her as "one of our guys" from episode 4 to episode 13
reiner and bertholt were around after that and got revealed in season 2 so we got to see them as "our guys" from episode 4 to episode 31
they just had a lot more time for viewers to get familiar with them so it feels like a greater conflict cause you still think of them as relatively important secondary characters for quite a while
you even get some internal monologues before the reveal

A while back you referenced how empathy can be weaponized. This is the payoff. As a German im not surprised you easily grasped this

This episode is definitely in my top list as well. I think your analysis is spot on. Bertholdts ''transformation'' is multi faceted. Bert could easily be US we faced with brutal choices. He 'hardened' his resolve

~11:30 It's disturbing how casually Zeke threatens Reiner here. "Give up your armor to another warrior" means "or else I will feed you to a child"

This is the first episode in one of my favorite back to back to back chunks of brilliant writing from Isayama. I really appreciated your tying all of the moments in the episode back to what I am fairly highly confident were the exact kinds of references Isayama was pulling from.
Sadly it seems the world did not learn from it's history and we are seeing this play out daily right now in reality. There are thousands upon thousands of Reiners and Bertholds being sent out to "exterminate the evil race" and I can only imagine they are saying the same things to themselves. Perhaps that's more of a discord topic.

Are you finished with season 3 already? Just to know how much we can talk about in the next episodes without spoiling stuff
