These take a bit longer, as I said, but I think you will enjoy all the next ones. I have now recored up to Armin eating Berthold (fricking ape).

also, since you've seen that far already, the complexity between his ambition and selfworth and his attempt to stop/save eren from risking his life combined, now in hindsight with erwins speach and charge and the way the phrase born into this world gets reframed chronologically from erens mom to erens wakeup in season 1 to the beginning of season 3 part 2 leading into that operation it simulataneously hits emotionally hard and shows the complexities of what that emotion plays into, how to get people willing to die

22:00 we all could we have future knowledge from the show of course thats not a very helpful strategy but its hard to imagine oneself with less information than one has so of course we think we could've perfectly dealt with every event in hindsight

HAL

I've always understood keith more with a focus on ambition and the love story as a sideplot that makes it sting even harder but I guess its both thats what makes hist story so understandable "special people do exist, I was just never one of them" hits damn hard, he's basically spent his whole life to this point as someone willing to give his life for the hope of humanity

HAL

25:50 I think theres that simplifeid model where everyone is in over their head because anyone doing a good job keeps getting promoted until they reach a position they aren't good at, then they stay where they are

This episode makes you think back to season 1 and reveals a few more things. So you can connect a few dots. But only just enough to make you realise that you're only scratching the surface. Which for me, at least at the time, heightens the anticipation and tension again with the question. What is in the F§$%& basement?

This is one of my favorite episodes in the entire series. I really like Carla's view that every person is special because they were born in this world. At some point I'd love to come back to this comment and talk about it more, but you'll actually need to finish both Attack on Titan and Vinland Saga for me to go further into it. These two shows are important thematically together because Attack on Titan's author actually was inspired by some of the themes of Vinland Saga, so discussing them fully and how they agree and differ on certain topics will be really interesting.

What an incredible story, what an incredible *writer* to have worked that thing in with the broken Belt into the opening chapters of the story intentionally, and then to only reveal why THIS MUCH FURTHER LATER. And it was absolutely decided by the author ahead of time, not something made up later. Because when Keith (changed his mind, and) had Eren switch belts, in the first episodes, right afterward as everyone was cheering for him the show showed us Keith saying solemnly in his head: "Grisha... your son has become a soldier."

This is such an interesting episode, because it really just functions as mostly payoff for breadcrumbs Isayama left and for filling plot holes. I felt odd watching it for the first time, because the things we get confirmed are things we (or at least I) was pretty sure of already. At the same time the context that it adds to rewatching the early seasons is pretty powerful. Isayama is one of the few mangaka who I feel like is always looking at the whole story he's trying to tell. He's looking from beginning to end and then back to the beginning to look for opportunities to make the whole of the story better despite the story being written and printed in small chunks.

Really appreciate that you caught on that part of Keith’s motivations for breaking the gear could be trying to protect Eren. 95% of reactors I’ve seen immediately just hate on Keith and call him an asshole without ever thinking critically about it. I think the most telling part is that he did tell him to switch belts with Thomas and try again. If he was purely just being a spiteful asshole, he could have continued the farce and failed Eren for not doing it well enough. But, he noticed that Eren was doing it even broken, that maybe Eren is special and will survive as a soldier, and decides to give him a chance.

also, in the flashback we see where he got "because I was born into this world" and keith commenting how he couldn't stop him from becoming a soldier adds so much meaning to the season 1 scene where he gets out of his dreamstate with the words "because I was born into this world", I think some translations changed that term sometimes but not others blurring that callback and continued parallel

HAL

are there spoilers in the menues? :D
