Jack Nicholson is the funniest Joker, by far. And he’s the one with the most genuine laugh. Mark Hamill has the best laugh, but it still sounds like it’s being forced out; you can tell it’s acting taking place. Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix, they both sound like they’re just trying to play up the crazy clown image, with only one genuine-sounding laugh between them. But Jack? I honestly believe that it’s just Jack really laughing. This is most best represented in the scene where he fries the gangster and then talks to his corpse while he’s alone. Not only does it show that this Joker isn’t playing up an image but is genuinely crazy and is genuinely laughing at his own jokes even when there’s no audience, he just entertaining himself. Not only does all that seem to be the case, but I have no trouble believing that Jack Nicholson was really, truly laughing in that scene. That he thought his one-liners and his making a joke at the prop of a dead body was actually hilarious, and he was laughing for real. Maybe not, but it sounds like it; his laugh sounds real, like it’s really him just laughing. That’s what makes him the funniest Joker to me, because the jokes are real.
