It is and what is even more daunting is that something like it almost happened. Look up the events around Nato exercise Able Archer in 1983. The year the movie War Games came out. In short the Soviet Union was convinced these exercises were an actual prelude to war and even start loading nuclear weapons onto their planes. Part also of this event (by many considered to be among the closest the world ever came to Nuclear War) was also the malfunctioning of the OKO early warning radar system 11 days earlier. The system reported (erroneously) a single ICBM missile launch, followed later by 4 more supposed ICBM launches. The officer in charge Stanislov Petrov, who had helped create the code for OKO, dismissed the both warnings as errors after no additional confirmation of the launches came. He did not follow protocol and alert his superiors, or we might have seen a quite different outcome. Two years earlier, the Soviet Union had deployed a software program dubbed RYAN, for Raketno Yadernoye Napadenie, or sudden nuclear missile attack. Massive for its time, RYAN sought to compute the relative power of the two superpowers by modeling 40,000 military, political, and economic factors, including 292 “indicators” reported from agents (spies) abroad. It was run by the KGB, which employed more than 200 people just to input the data. The Soviets built RYAN to warn them when their country’s relative strength had declined to a point that the U.S. might launch a preemptive first strike on the Soviet Union. Leaders decided that if Soviet power was at least 70 percent of that of the United States the balance of power was stable. As the months went by, this number plummeted. By 1983, RYAN reported that Soviet power had declined to just 45 percent of that of the United States. This amplified Soviet leaders’ paranoia.

2024-11-03 08:25:14 +0000 UTCSpare some sympathy for the show runners of "The Agents of SHIELD" TV show ... they had just finished their first season when this film was released, and SHIELD implodes, and they suddenly have to cope with the HYDRA having infiltrated their organisation. A good series, worth reactions at some time.
