Disenchanted FULL Reaction

Ah, I finally finished it and I'm not sure how to feel about it. The original cast really helped to recapture some of the magic of the first so I still had fun, but overall it felt like a missed opportunity. Giselle and Morgan's relationship in the first film was one of my favourite relationships and the focus on that at the start is why I felt hopeful. After Giselle made the wish, I think there was just too much going on. Everyone was off doing their own thing and the ending which hinged on Giselle's motherly love felt lacking because they abandoned that plot midway. Don't get me wrong, it was fun to see evil Giselle but I think what seems to happen time and time again with any movies or shows that have magic or superpowers, is that they overdo the magic/ spectacle and forget the human aspect. What made "Enchanted" so good for me was the character development and the relationships. I personally would've preferred less magic and more focus on Giselle and Morgan's arc. The movie I would've preferred to see would be the same set up of Giselle dealing with teen Morgan but in New York. They could've kept Giselle somehow turning evil and then have Morgan learn to be more like Giselle (breaking into song, tapping into that magic to help bring Giselle back and for Morgan to also remember the child-like wonder she use to have). And I like the concept of memories in this film as you said, but if it felt more grounded, it would've been more powerful. Like say, having Morgan go back to some old spots where she could talk about her memories with Giselle and what it was liking having her as a mother, and by doing so, she could’ve remembered how close they use to be as well. I also think revisiting Giselle’s fashion line that she started at the end of “Enchanted” would’ve been cool…Maybe we could’ve seen what happened with that? I think there was so much time we missed in between these two films and I would’ve loved to have seen Morgan relive those memories or retell those stories instead of just seeing it in an abstract way (memory tree). Anyway, my verdict is that “Enchanted” is miles ahead of this one, and I don’t see myself rewatching this (even though I didn’t hate it)….but as always, it was fun seeing your reaction Thor! PS: Prince Edward was criminally under-used in this one :(
