Schindler's List FULL Reaction

Obviously a very serious and tragic movie, please feel free to educate me about the historical events/ characters.  What a masterpiece from Spielberg...

Schindler's List FULL Reaction

Comments

So, i watched along the whole three hours with you. I have seen this film at least twenty times before with friends or family who also watched it for the first time. Everyone reacts equally. They hardly move for the entire movie. Not with the face but mostly not with the body. It was the same with you. While watching a film, even if it deals with a very serious topic, it is normal to react in some way to relieve tension. You know, put yourself in a more comfortable position, disgust, wondering, jumping, anger, sadness, turning your face away…something... None of this happens when people watch this movie. All this happens inwards for three hours. That's so powerful. I don't want to say anything about the historical accuracy than that it is consistent with what is taught at german schools. This topic is taken very, very seriously here and it is ensured that the children deal responsibly and respectfully with what happened. In addition, as mentioned in the previous comments, this film is based on statements from people who have experienced this. Who am I to question that? I am sure that Mr. Spielberg has also dealt with the story very responsibly. I would like to add that whenever the film is on German television, there are absolutely no advertising interruptions. The reason for this is Steven Spielberg himself, who insisted when granting rights that Schindler's list may be interrupted by a maximum of four advertising blocks, but nevertheless appealed not to violate the dignity of his film under any circumstances. And it is prohibited by law in Germany to deny the Holocaust. According to paragraph 130 ("Incitement of the People's Incitement") of the Criminal Code, perpetrators face up to five years in prison. Anyone who approves, glorifies or justifies the rule of the National Socialists must expect a sentence of up to three years in prison. That was a lot. So you see that this is really deeply rooted in our lives and I had to talk about it from the soul. Thank you🥹

Most of what you saw was based on broad history and survivor testimony. You can see the survivors on YouTube in interviews and documentaries. I couldn't tell if you noticed, but at the end each of the survivors placed a rock on Schindler's grave accompanied by the actor who portrayed them. You can search their names to locate the footage on YouTube. Also Spielberg was inspired to create the Shoah Foundation which has a web site with over 55,000 testimonies about the Holocaust that is worth taking some time with. “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” – George Santayana, The Life of Reason, 1905.

Apparently the real Amon Göth was so despicable/evil that Spielberg toned his character down for the movie because he would have come off as too cartoonish/unbelievable.

A couple of corrections that I'll put here, because Patreon has a habit of eating comments if you try to edit them. I said I rented the movie on a two-disk VHS. LOL I meant two-tape. And when I mentioned the scenes where the prisoners were going around the yard naked or the bodies were being tossed into the mass grave, those were not scenes shot for the film but real. That is true, but I should note that while some of the cuts were real footage, they were interspliced with scenes that were created for the movie, so that parts of scenes were real. Both of these things are obvious, but I wanted to clarify because I hate giving misinformation.

I don't have time to watch this now because of the length (life getting in the way), but I will later. I was eighteen when I saw this movie for the first time. I was doing an essay on WW2, and someone recommended I watch it for research. After I heard how hard it was to watch, I was terrified to see it, but I rented it (on a two disk VHS) and sat through the whole thing stunned into horrified silence nearly the whole time. This movie is brutally hard to watch, but it's also a necessary experience. Every actor in this movie brought their A-game. Liam Neesan was incredible, but they all were. One of the most disturbing things about this movie is that some of the key shots in the film (the shots with the prisoners being registered at the camp, being made to walk or run around the front grounds in the nude, and the scenes where the bodies were being dumped into the mass graves) were real. Those weren't scenes shot for the movie with actors. Those were real footage. While reading up on events of the war, I saw some photographs or footage that I was able to recognize from the film. The real footage was blended so well with the movie's filmed scenes that if not for that, I never would have known what was real and what was not. Every time I see Schindler break down ("one more person!"" I sob. Every time. It's easy to see why that performance is legendary. I think I know exactly what you were feeling at the end of this movie, Thor, when you were struggling to review it. Finishing this movie, it always feels a bit strange to just got back to your life. It feels as if the world has changed, and anything you say about the movie feels somehow cheap and ineffectual, as if words lessen the experience somehow. You did good, my friend. You did good. I also get why it feels like you weren't watching a movie. It's because you weren't. You were watching history. You were watching life. I've always enjoyed your outro: Be active, be mindful, be a hero. But coming after this movie, it's ironic that your words feel like the perfect cap-off to the film. Because Shindler was a hero, and I think we can all use a reminder to make a difference, to do right. We all should be heroes. As hard as this movie is to watch, I think it's something that everyone should watch. Even if they only see it once.

I haven't seen it for a long time. (Deep sigh) Here we go.
